Twas the Night Before the Sweet 16

I'm really looking forward to the National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 which starts tomorrow at Rupp Arena. There's a lot to look forward to beginning with the opening game - University Heights Academy vs. Lexington Catholic - at noon. UHA is the All "A" Classic champion. Lexington Catholic is the tournament favorite. The top two teams - Lexington Catholic and Mason County - are in opposite brackets. If the Knights and Royals take care of business in the first three rounds, they will meet in the championship game Saturday night. The two leading candidates for Mr. Basketball - Darius Miller of Mason County and Scotty Hopson of UHA - can showcase their talents on the state's biggest stage. Can Mason County win its second state championship in five years? Keep checking the blog. I'll have updates each night.

Lofton Scores 25 in Vols' Loss to Arkansas

Chris Lofton made five three-pointers and scored 25 points but his potential game-winning shot at the buzzer rimmed out and Tennessee lost to Arkansas 92-91 tonight in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

Fans Once Barred from District Game

Seeing the sparse crowds at the Southeastern Conference Tournament because most fans were barred from Alexander Memorial Coliseum after the tournament had to be moved from the Georgia Dome reminded me of a time when fans were kept away from a 39th District Tournament game at the Mason County Fieldhouse. It happened in 1975 or 1977. There was a huge fight involving the fans after a Maysville and Fleming County boys' game. It was such a serious situation that tournament officials barred fans from attending the Maysville vs. Fleming County girls' game. The game was played in the afternoon. Tournament officials, the two teams and the media were the only people allowed in the gym. The Fieldhouse was off limits to students that day. Don Stahl did the play-by-play on WFTM. If my memory is correct, one of my teachers allowed us to listen to part of the game.
