Tom Posey is the new baseball coach at St. Patrick

Tom Posey is the new baseball coach at St. Patrick High School.

The school announced the hiring on Twitter and Facebook.

St. Patrick will play at the junior varsity level only this season.

Posey was the head coach at Mason County from 2012 to 2018 where he compiled a 116-90-1 record.

In a text message, Posey said he was not sure how many games the Saints will have on the schedule this season which begins next week. He said had sent an email to the small schools seeking games.

With St. Patrick playing JV only, that's leaves the 39th District with just three varsity programs -- Augusta, Bracken County and Mason County.

Will Porter signs with Transylvania University

During the winter of his junior year, Will Porter was seriously injured in a wreck. Today, the Mason County senior shortstop and pitcher signed a letter of intent with Transylvania University.

"Last season was pretty rough, just getting back into it, I felt like I was just always a step behind," Porter said. "So, that's why signing to play college baseball is so great in contrast to last year."

Porter said the fact that Transy coach Zach Getsee called him instead of texting as most coaches do, "sorta gave me a good vibe."

A visit to the campus sealed the deal.

"We were just sold from the get-go," Porter said. "It's really beautiful down there and such a good environment, and baseball- they're on the up."

Porter said he will be an infielder for the Pioneers. He is undecided on a major.

Mason County coach Tom Posey said Porter has been a "great leader" for the Royals.

Jantzen Smith signs with KCU

Mason County senior Jantzen Smith will be one of the 25 players Kentucky Christian University will count on to revive its varsity baseball program after a 23-year absence.

Smith signed with KCU this afternoon.

He is one of five or six outfielders that coach Chris Hensley said he expects to rotate.

Hensley mentioned Smith's speed and said he "is going to be a big role in the team."

Smith is sidelined with an injury. He goes back to the doctor on May 8.

Mason County coach Tom Posey told Smith "we're proud of you, you done a great job for us; hopefully, we'll get you back soon."

Smith says he's thinking about going into psychology and getting into an occupational therapy program.

Hunter Hill signs to play baseball at Union College

Mason County senior Hunter Hill signed today to play baseball at Union College in Barbourville.

Hill, a left handed pitcher and outfielder, visited Berea College and talked with Ohio University Chillicothe and Asbury University, but said when he visited Union it felt like home "and I like the small campus, I like the new facilities, it just went really well for me."

Mason County coach Tom Posey said Hill's fastball has been clocked at 77 miles per hour.

"My go to pitch is a two-seam fastball, but I like to work in a four-seam a lot too," Hill said. "Two-seam, I get a lot of movement out of coming as a left-hander. I throw a circle changeup and a 12-6 curveball."

Hill said he is looking at accounting as a major and business as a minor, but is still undecided.

Mason Co. senior Zach Hunt signs to play baseball at Union College

Mason County senior pitcher and outfielder Zach Hunt signed today with Union College in Barbourville.

Hunt, a left-hander, decided to go to Union College after working out there.

"I just had a real good time working with the coaches," Hunt said. "They showed me a few things on how to improve what I'm doing."

Hunt also liked what he saw at the college.

"The campus is gorgeous," Hunt said. "As soon as we pulled up there, it was neat. It had its own unique character."

Hunt said he throws a four-seam fastball, a two-seam fastball and a changeup and is working on a curveball.

He said he plans on majoring in accounting.

Mason County coach Tom Posey said he is excited for Hunt and the Royals' baseball program.
