Reid Jolly’s potential game-tying shot in the closing seconds was blocked by University of Louisville signee David Johnson and the Trinity Shamrocks edged the Campbell County 42-40 in the semifinals of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 tonight at Rupp Arena.
Trinity led 20-5 in the opening minute of the second quarter, but Campbell County closed the half on a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to two points.
The Camels led 29-24 with 2:05 left in the 3rd quarter, but the Shmarocks went on a 16-6 run to lead 40-35 with 1:47 left in the game
Jolly hit a three-pointer with 1:33 to go.
Drew Wilson came up with a steal with 1:19 remaining, but the Camels missed a layup and committed a turnover.
After Trinity hit 1-of-2 free throws, Jolly made a layup to cut the Shamrocks’ lead to one at 41-40.
Johnson made 1-of-2 free throws with :15 seconds left.
As Jolly drove in the lane, Trinity knocked the ball out of bounds with four seconds to play.
After a timeout, the Camels inbounded the ball to Jolly. Johnson blocked the shot into the hands a teammate and time expired.
Trinity’s last field goal was with 6:56 left in the game. The Shamrocks hit 11-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter.
Jolly led all scorers with 17 points. Wilson added 10 points.
Johnson led Trinity with 13 points. Ethan Hodge came in off the bench and tossed in 11 points. Hodge scored the Shamrocks’ first points of the third quarter.
