Lexi Young verbally committs to Indiana University

Mason County senior track and field star Lexi Young has verbally committed to Indiana University.

Young has won several state championships and All-State honors in the high jump, long jump and triple jump, and holds numerous school records.

She is also a member of the Mason County Lady Royals basketball team.

November 12 is the first day of the official signing period.

Young and Thompson win state championships, lead Lady Royals to a third-place finish

Lexi Young and Ava Thompson both won state championships while helping the Mason County Lady Royals to a third-place finish at the Clarks Pump-n-Shop Class 2A Track and Field State Championships on Friday at the University of Kentucky.

Young is the triple jump (35' 0.75") state champion and the high jump state champion (5' 8") while Thompson is the pole vault state champion (12' 00").

Young finished second in the long jump (17" 9.75") and third in the 100 meter dash (12.62).

The Lady Royals ended up with 68 points. Lexington Catholic won the state championship with 88 points and Calloway County was the runner-up with 75 points.

Lady Royals second, Royals seventh at AJ's Heart of the Bluegrass track and field meet

The Mason County Lady Royals took second place and the Royals finished in seventh place at AJ's Heart of the Bluegrass track and field meet in Harrodsburg on Saturday.

Lexi Young won the High Point Award. She won the long jump (17-09.25) and high jump (5-08.00) and was second in the 100 meter dash (12.73) and fifth in the 200 meter dash (26.42).

Dashawn Overly won the 3200 meter run (9:47.54).

"It was an excellent performance by both the girls and boys teams today," coach Mark Kachler wrote in an email message. "This is one of the largest and most talented meets held in KY each year."

Mason County will compete in the Harrison County Invitational this Saturday.

Lady Royals take first place, the Royals finish second at the Bourbon County Medley Relays

The Mason County Lady Royals took first place and the Royals finished in second place at the Bourbon County Medley Relays on Friday.

Lexi Young won the girls' long jump (18-2.50) and Trazon Lang won the boys' high jump (6-00.00). 

Mason County relay teams taking first place included the boys' 2800 meter distance medley relay, the girls' 1200 meter sprint medley relay, the boys' 4x100 meter thrower's relay and the girls' 800 meter sprint medley relay.

The Lady Royals and Royals will compete in the Oak Ridge Invitational in Tennessee on Friday and Saturday.

Lady Royals end the season with a 77-37 loss to No. 2 GRC

The Mason County Lady Royals were no match for George Rogers Clark, the No. 2 team in the state, especially after losing two starters to injuries.

The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 12-0 lead and defeated Mason County 77-37 in the quarterfinals of the 10th Region Tournament on Monday night at Campbell County Middle School. 

Lexi Young and Adrienne Downs-Perry left the game in the first half with injuries.

GRC (23-7) led 14-3 at the end of the first quarter, 39-14 at halftime and 60-30 after three quarters.

Jailenn Green led the Lady Cardinals in scoring with 15 points. Kennedy Stamper followed with 12 points and Kyleigh Chestnut added 10.

Ceeara Fox was Mason County's leading scorer with six points.

The Lady Royals ended the season with a 21-10 record. With no seniors on the team, everyone should return for next season.

GRC advances to the semifinals to play Campbell County. The Lady Camels beat the Nicholas County Lady Jackets 72-36 in the opening game of the tournament.

Mason County and Bracken County winners in girls' 39th District Tournament semis

The Mason County Lady Royals and the Bracken County Lady Bears posted semifinal wins in the 39th District Tournament on Monday night at The Fieldhouse and will meet in the championship game on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Mason County 63, St. Patrick 25
Lexi Young had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Royals to their 21st win of the season. 

Emma Gallenstein and Lillian Klee each scored 11 points for the Lady Saints who closed out the season with a 4-19 record.

Mason County outscored St. Patrick 21-3 in the second quarter and 17-2 in the third quarter. The final 12:05 was played with a running clock.

Nicole Archibald scored 22 points and the Lady Bears rallied from a 16-point deficit.

Savannah Kelsch added 10 points and Brianna Bauer had nine points and nine rebounds for Bracken County (21-10) which ran its winning streak to four games.

Augusta (11-17) was up 26-10 late in the first quarter, but only scored three points in the second quarter, and Bracken County led 34-29 at halftime.

Kenzington Hinson led the Lady Panthers with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Aryanna Davis chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. Laci Tackett had nine points and nine assists.

Lady Royals beat Nicholas County 63-41

Lexi Young had a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double and Amirah Reed scored 14 points as the Mason County Lady Royals defeated the Nicholas County Lady Jackets on Thursday night in Carlisle.

Down 24-17 in the second quarter with three starters on the bench in foul trouble, Mason County reeled off 12 straight points and was in the lead for the rest of the game.

A 16-0 run gave the Lady Royals a 51-32 lead with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Mason County held Nicholas County to 13 second half points and led by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Royals (18-8) will play the Harrison County Fillies in Cynthiana on Saturday afternoon.

Another sweep for the Mason County track and field teams

The Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams swept the indoor meet at their home facility for their third straight week on Saturday.

The Lady Royals finished with 133 points. The Bishop Brossart Lady 'Stangs were second with 86.5 points. 

The Royals racked up 86.5 points. Henry County was the runner-up with 51 points.

First place finishes by Mason County athletes include:

  • Sarah Payne, girls' 400 meter dash (1:02.60)

  • Lexi Young, girls' high jump (5'-2") and girls' long jump (17'-1.50")

  • Ava Thompson, girls' pole vault (11'-0")

  • Dashawn Overly, boys' 1600 meter run (4:47.03)

Another sweep for the Mason County track and field teams

For the second straight week, the Mason County girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams swept a Mason County meet on Saturday.

The Lady Royals finished with 166 points. The Harrison County Fillies were a distant second with 40 points.

The Royals had a team score of 108.5. Madison Southern finished second with 61 points.

Mason County athletes with first place finishes include:

  • Kenzie Gulley, girls' 55 meter dash (7.58)
  • Sarah Payne, girls' 400 meter dash (1:03.00)
  • Lexi Young, girls' high jump (5-0) and girls' long jump (16-9.25)

Lady Royals edge East Carter 59-57 in OT

Lexi Young scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Mason County Lady Royals defeated the East Carter Lady Raiders 59-57 in overtime on Monday night in Grayson.

Amirah Reed added 10 points for the Lady Royals.

Mason County led 42-27 with 7:02 left in the fourth quarter, but East Carter ended regulation on 23-8 run. Tori Bishop banked in a 3-pointer from the volleyball line at the buzzer.

The Lady Royals (14-6) will host the Augusta Lady Panthers on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at The Fieldhouse in the first game of a girls' and boys' doubleheader.

Lady Royals lose to Parkersburg

The Mason County Lady Royals were unable to overcome a slow start and lost to the Parkersburg Big Reds on Saturday in the 5th Annual Winter Hoops Classic at Eastern Brown. 

Parkersburg, a Class 4A school from West Virginia, led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter and 33-19 at halftime.

Carlee Buttery led the Lady Royals in scoring with 16 points. Amirah Reed tossed in 13 points and Lexi Young added 12 points.

Mason County (13-6) will travel to Grayson on Monday night to play the East Carter Lady Raiders.

Lady Royals fall to 8th ranked Holy Cross

The Holy Cross Lady Indians lived up to their No. 8 ranking in handing the Mason County Lady Royals 64-37 loss on Saturday at the Lady Royals Gym.

Lexi Young led Mason County in scoring with 13 points.

The Lady Royals (11-5) will host the Bourbon County Lady Colonels on Tuesday night.

Lady Royals defeat Lady Saints

Adrienne Downs-Perry scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Mason County Lady Royals to a 63-18 win over the St. Patrick Lady Saints on Thursday night at the Lady Royals Gym.

Olivia Hughes tossed in 12 points and Lexi Young added for the Lady Royals who snapped a two-game losing skid.

Lillian Klee led the Lady Saints with 12 points.

Mason County (11-4) will host Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon.

St. Patrick (2-11) will be at home on Saturday afternoon vs. Somerset Christian School.

Lady Royals suffer a 41-32 road loss to Campbell County

The Mason County Lady Royals trailed 18-5 at the end of the first quarter and lost to the Campbell County Lady Camels 41-32 on Tuesday night in Claryville.

Kendall Augsback scored a game-high 11 points for Campbell County (9-3).

Mason County (10-4) was led by Amirah Reed and Lexi Young with seven points apiece.

The Lady Royals will play the St. Patrick Lady Saints on Thursday night at the Lady Royals Gym.

Lady Royals lose to Rowan County 62-60 in 2A Section 6 semifinals

The Mason County Lady Royals rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to lead by three early in the fourth quarter, but could not hold on and lost to the Rowan County Lady Vikings 62-60 on Thursday in the semifinals of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament at Rowan County.

Adrienne Downs-Perry made five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 15 points for Mason County (10-3). Amirah Reed followed with 14 points and Lexi Young and Olivia Hughes scored 12 points apiece.

Kassi Perkins hit five 3-pointers and scored 24 points for Rowan County (9-5).

The Lady Royals were outscored 20-6 in the second quarter and trailed 47-23 at halftime.

Mason County outscored Rowan County 22-11 in the third quarter and was up 51-48 with 6:15 left in the game, but the Lady Vikings answered with a 14-6 run to lead 62-57 with 20 seconds left.

After Reed made a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go, Rowan County missed four straight free throws, but had fouls to give and whittled the clock down to a half a second. The Lady Royals missed a half-court heave at the buzzer.

Mason County will travel to Claryville on Tuesday night to play the Campbell County Lady Camels.

Lady Royals beat Fleming County 62-48 in 2A section quarterfinal

 The Mason County Lady Royals hope to return to the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament for the second straight year. 

They took the first step on Friday night with a 62-48 victory over the Fleming County Lady Panthers in a quarterfinal round game of the Section 6 Tournament at The Fieldhouse.

Amirah Reed and Lexi Young scored 23 points apiece for Mason County (10-2).

Ariana Adams led Fleming County (3-7) with 14 points. Ava Watson added 12 and scored her 1,000th career point.

Mason County led 9-0 and 13-2 in the first quarter and 22-12 in the second quarter. Fleming County pulled to within one point at 24-23. 

The Lady Royals were up 27-24 at halftime and pulled away by opening the third quarter with a 15-0 run. Mason County led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Mason County advances to the semifinals to play the Rowan County Lady Vikings on Monday night at Rowan County.

Fleming County will play at Russell on January 14.

Lady Royals fall to sharpshooting Campbell County

The Mason County Lady Royals built a 10-point lead in the first half, but could not withstand a 3-point shooting barrage by Campbell County and lost to the Lady Camels 82-71 on Friday at the Lady Royals Gym.

Isabella Jayasuriya made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 30 points for the Lady Camels who hit more 3s (15) than 2s (14).

Amirah Reed made four 3-pointers and led Mason County in scoring with 26 points. Lexi Young followed with 13 points and Carlee Buttery added 11.

Mason County (9-2) led 26-16 in the second quarter, but Campbell County (7-3) hit seven 3-pointers in the quarter and ended the half on a 16-7 run and scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to lead 42-33.

The Lady Camels connected on six 3-pointers in the third quarter and led 60-37 with 1:17 left in the quarter.

Mason County pulled to within three points at 66-63 with 5:43 to play, but Campbell County answered with an 8-0 run to push the lead to 74-63 with 4:08 remaining in the game. The Lady Royals, who ended up with nine 3-pointers, would get no closer than seven points. 

Mason County will host Fleming County on January 3 at The Fieldhouse in the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament.

Lady Royals beat Paul Dunbar in OT for third place in Gateway Holiday Classic

The Mason County Lady Royals led by 12 points at halftime and trailed by three in the fourth quarter before going to overtime and pulling out a 49-43 victory over the Paul Laurence Lady Bulldogs on Sunday in the third place game of the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County.

The Lady Royals, playing their second overtime game in three days, outscored the Lady Bulldogs 10-4 in the extra period.

Lexi Young scored a game-high 19 points for Mason County and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Amirah Reed followed with 13 points and Olivia Hughes added 10.

Mason County (9-1) will host the Campbell County Lady Camels on Friday afternoon at the Lady Royals Gym.

Lady Royals edge Great Crossing 59-56 in OT

Amirah Reed and Lexi Young both scored 16 points as the Mason County Lady Royals ran their record to 8-0 with a 59-56 victory over the Great Crossing Warhawks in overtime on Friday night in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County.

The Lady Royals will play in the semifinals on Saturday at 6 p.m. against the winner of the South Laurel vs. Raceland game.

Lady Royals rally for a 57-47 victory over Bracken County

Amirah Reed scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter and Lexi Young finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds to propel the undefeated Mason County Lady Royals to a 57-47 come-from-behind win over the Bracken County Lady Bears on Tuesday night in Brooksville.

Mason County (7-0) trailed by nine points in the second quarter and was down 42-39 with 5:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. 

A 13-1 run with Reed scoring all 13 of Mason County's points gave the Lady Royals a 52-43 lead with 2:33 left.

There were four ties and nine lead changes in the game.

Nichole Archibald led Bracken County (4-2) in scoring with 15.

The Lady Royals will travel to Mt. Sterling on Friday to play Great Crossing in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County.

The Lady Bears will play at St. Henry on Friday night.
