10th Region tennis tournament begins Saturday

The 10th Region tennis tournament is scheduled to begin Saturday at Campbell County High School.

Mallory Conrad and Haley White of Mason County are seeded No. 1 in girls doubles.

Evan Kalb and Logan Kalb of St. Patrick are seeded No. 5 in boys doubles.

The plan is to play two rounds on Saturday for all brackets.

Logan Kalb signs with Transy

St. Patrick senior Logan Kalb signed today to play tennis at Transylvania University. 

"I think it's the perfect school for me," Kalb said. "It's an hour and half away, roughly, from where I live; it's a good commute back to home on the weekends if I want to. Feels like home; good people there."

Kalb said he started playing tennis when he was three or four years old and he started thinking about playing in college when he was in the eighth or ninth grade.

He said the experience of playing in the state tournament was huge.

"I've always wanted to play in the state tournament, and with the help of my brother (Evan), I think we got there with a lot of hard work, and it took time, but pays off a lot," Kalb said.

Logan and Evan advanced to the second round of the state tournament last season.

Kalb said he might major in pre-med biology, and maybe become a radiologist.

Tessa Gray's high school career ends in the 2nd round of the KHSAA Tennis Championships

Mason County senior Tessa Gray's outstanding high school career came to end today with a loss in the second round of the KHSAA Tennis Championships in Lexington.

Gray defeated LaRue County senior Karrington Donahue 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round this morning, but lost to North Oldham freshman Katie Beavin, a No. 5 seed, 4-6, 3-6 in the second round this afternoon.

Gray, who has signed to play at the University of the Cumberlands, advanced to the state tournament five out of six seasons. She won her second straight region championship this season and also has been a region runner-up.

St. Patrick's Logan Kalb and Evan Kalb had a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Knott County Central's Austin Hesston and Bryson Honeycutt in the opening round of the boys' tournament this morning, but lost to Villa Madonna's Yamann Ahmad and Robert Spicker 1-6, 0-6 in the second round this afternoon.

In the girls' doubles tournament, Mason County's Mallory Conrad and Haley White lost to McCracken County's Emily Dew and Isabella McKinney 2-6, 3-6 in the opening round.

KHSAA Tennis Championships brackets released

The KHSAA State Tennis Championships brackets were released today.

Mason County senior Tessa Gray plays LaRue County senior Karrington Donahue Thursday at 9:15 a.m.,  and in girls' doubles, Mason County's Mallory Conrad and Haley White play Emily Dew and Isabella McKinney of McCracken County Thursday at 11:45 a.m. Both of those matches will be played at the Boone Tennis Center at the University of Kentucky.

In boys' doubles, St. Patrick's Logan Kalb and Evan Kalb play Austin Hesston and Bryson Honeycutt of Knott County Central Thursday at 11:15 a.m. at Shillito Park.

Gray and Lady Royals back-to-back 10th Region Champions

Mason County senior Tessa Gray is the girls tennis singles 10th Region champion for the second straight year and the Lady Royals are back-to-back champions.

Gray, the No. 1 seed defeated No. 4 seed Brooke Hodory of Highlands 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals and No. 2 seed Natalie Smith of Campbell County 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match Monday in Mt. Sterling.

Gray won four matches in the tournament without losing a set.

The Lady Royals edged the Harrison County Fillies by two points for the team title.

The Mason County girls doubles team of Mallory Conrad and Haley White won their semifinal match 6-4, 6-3, but lost  6-4, 4-6,11-9 in the finals.

St. Patrick brothers Logan and Evan Kalb lost their semifinal match. All semifinalists advance to the state tournament.

Gray, White and Conrad advance to region semis

Mason County junior Tessa Gray and the Mason County girls' doubles team of Haley White and Mallory Conrad have qualified for the state tennis tournament by advancing to the semifinals of the 10th Region tournaments at Harrison County.

Gray, the No. 1 seed, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brooke Hodory of Highlands. Gray plays Paxton Glenn of Campbell County in the semifinals.

White and Conrad beat Miller and Utz of Pendleton County 6-1, 6-1. White and Conrad play Lanza and Gill of Harrison County in the semifinals.

Mason County senior Timmy Douglas, the No. 5 seed, lost to No. 4 seed Colin Rizzo of Highlands 0-6, 2-6.

The St. Patrick boys' doubles team of Logan Kalb and Evan Kalb lost to Bertsch and Coyle of Campbell County 6-3, 0-6, 5-10.

Several local players advance in 10th Region tennis tournaments

Mason County junior Tessa Gray, the No. 1 seed, advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 10th Region girls' tennis tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jenna Sanders of Nicholas County Monday at the Harrison County tennis complex.

Mason County senior Timmy Douglas, the No. 5 seed, defeated Victor Cruz of 6-1, 6-1 in the boys' single tournament.

The Mason County girls' doubles team of Haley White and Mallory Conrad advanced with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

The St. Patrick boys' doubles team of Logan Kalb and Evan Kalb posted a 6-2, 6-3 win.
