Morgan Carpenter signs with Transylvania University

Mason County senior Morgan Carpenter signed today to continue her academic and track and field/cross country career at Transylvania University.

Carpenter was the 2021 region champion pole vaulter. She runs the 400 meter dash, is on the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams and also ran cross country, finishing 12th at the region meet last year.

Decker and Royals are XC region champions, Overly and Royals are runners-up

Mason County senior Paige Decker was the individual champion and she led the Lady Royals to the team title today at the Class AA Region 6 cross country meet at Boyd County. It's the Lady Royals 10th regional team championship in the last 15 years.

In the boys' meet, Mason County sophomore Deshawn Overly was the individual runner-up and he led the Royals to a runner-up finish, their best finish since 2012.

The Lady Royals had 35 points. Boyd County was a distance second with 65 points and Russell was third with 66.

Decker crossed the finish line with a time of 19:02.06.

Layla Henderson was third (20:08.18), Elizabeth Lavinder was seventh (20:46.96), Morgan Carpenter was 12th (21:50.83), Ava Thompson was 13th (21:57.93), Alexis Decker was 22nd (22:47.56) and Hadley Maher was 31st (23:28.78)

Boyd County won the boys' meet with 34 points followed by Mason County with 66 and East Carter with 81.

Overly had a time of 17:24.23.

Peyton Ullery as seventh (17:36.15), Alex Brannon was 16th (18:37.61), Elijah Reed was 19th (19:19.45), Jackson Truesdell was 22nd (19:38.88), Keenan Galloway was 31st (20:32.88) and Casey Magee was 34th (20:46.06).

The Lady Royals and Royals both advance to the state meets next Friday at Bourbon County.

Rachel Payne sets two new school records at indoor track and field meet in Louisville

Mason County senior Rachel Payne set two school records at the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Age Group indoor track and field meet today in Louisville.

Payne set records in the 60 meter hurdles (10.50) and the 400 meter dash (1:04.35).

Mason County sophomore Morgan Carpenter won the girls' pole vault by clearing 2.26m. 

The meet was held at the Norton Health Care Sports and Learning Center, a brand new facility that will be the site of the Indoor State Championship on March 6.

AJ Barrett breaks pole vault record in second straight meet

Mason County sophomore AJ Barrett broke his own school record in the pole vault for the second straight week today at Mason County indoor track and field meet #2.

Barrett cleared 11 feet today to win the event. He cleared 10-09.00 in last week's season opening meet.

Dixie Heights won the girls' meet today while West Jessamine won the boys' meet. Mason County finished second in the girls' meet and third in the boys' meet. 

Mason County athletes joining Barrett with first place finishes include:

  • Kenzie Gulley, girls' 55 meter dash (7.82)
  • Morgan Carpenter, girls' 400 meter dash (1:08.61)
  • Layla Henderson, girls' 800 meter run (2:37.58)
  • Paige Decker, girls' 3000 meter run (11:46. 92)
  • Alix Flinders, boys' 55 meter dash (7.18)
Bracken County junior Payton Tulley won the boys' shot put with a toss of 35-00.00.

11 Mason County XC runners named to KTCCCA Academic All-State Team

Mason County cross country runners have been named to the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-State Team.
Deshawn Overly, Alyssa Bisotti, Morgan Carpenter, Alexis Decker, Paige Decker, Hayden Faris, Layla Henderson, Elizabeth Lavinder, Hadley Maher, Rachel Payne and Kendra Shoemaker met both the academic athletic requirements for the all-state recognition.

Lavinder sets school record in 1600 meters; 3 Mason County athletes compete in state pole vault

Mason County freshman Elizabeth Lavinder set a new school in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:31.25 at Mason County Indoor Track and Field Meet #4 on Saturday.

Three Mason County freshman competed in the state indoor pole vault championship in Shelbyville on Sunday.

Morgan Carpenter was fourth (8'), Layla Henderson fifth (6'6") and Cameron Rosel tied for seventh place (8'6').

Mason County will begin the full state indoor track and field meet this Saturday at the Carmeuse/Mason County School Indoor Athletic Complex with nine points for the girls and one and a-half points for the boys thanks to the pole vault. 

(Updated to correct that the pole vault meet was on Sunday, not on Monday.)

Abi Dawson is state runner-up in pole vault with a new school record

Mason County senior Abi Dawson is the state runner-up in the indoor pole vault. 

She broke her own school record for the third consecutive weekend by clearing 10-feet, 6-inches today at Kentucky Elite Athletics pole vault facility in Shelbyville.

Mason County senior Olivia O'Hearn took fourth place with a personal record of 9-feet, 6-inches. 

Mason County eighth graders Morgan Carpenter and Alexis Decker tied for seventh place. Another Mason County eighth grader, Layla Henderson, was eighth.

Carpenter, Decker and Henderson have only been vaulting since January.

The state meet for the pole vault was held today ahead of the rest of the indoor state meet which will take place Saturday at Mason County.

Lady Royals win Area 7 Championship

The Mason County Lady Royals cross country team won the Area 7 Championship today at Boyd County.

Mason County's 40 points topped the nine-team girls' field. The second place team, Morgan County, had 93 points.

Eighth grader Paige Decker led Mason County with a second place finish in a time of 20:02.10.

Four other Lady Royals finished in the top 20- freshman Alyssa Bisotti 9th (21:35.28), Hayden Faris 13th (22:34.50), freshman Kylee Howe 17th (23:18.53) and 8th grader Morgan Carpenter 18th (23:21.75).

Bracken County seniors Brandon Cox and Jared Jefferson finished 1-2 in the boys' race to lead the Polar Bears to third place in the team standings.

With a time of 17:03.26, Cox edged Jefferson by just over 11 seconds.

Mason County junior Isaiah Riggs took ninth place (18:18.81) and Mason County sophomore Carson Adams finished in 14th place (18:34.70) to lead the Royals to a 7th place finish.

Boyd County won the boys' team championship.
