Royals edge Polar Bears 43-38

Terrell Henry scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and the Mason County Royals beat the Bracken County Polar Bears 43-38 in the semifinals of the 39th District Tournament at The Fieldhouse on Monday night. Mason County extended its winning streak against Bracken County to 33 games.

There were six ties and seven lead changes through the first three quarters.

Two layups by Henry to start the fourth quarter gave the Royals a 35-31 lead.

Blake Reed drained a 3-pointer to cut the Royals' lead to one.

Bracken County had a chance to regain the lead, but KG Walton came up with a steal and scored on a layup.

A basket by Devante Jefferson cut Mason County's lead to one again, but that would be the Polar Bear's last field goal.

Riley Mastin made 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 38-36 with 1:50 to play.

Henry made another layup to push the lead to four points with 56 seconds remaining. 

Henry made two free throws to boost the lead to 42-36 with only 16 seconds left.

Reed was fouled on a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining. He made 2-of-3 free throws.

KG Walton hit 1-of-2 free throws with seven seconds left.

Mastin scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half. 

Philip Bierley had a game-high seven rebounds for the Royals.

Reed finished with 18 points, 11 below his season average. He was guarded by either Henry or Walton for most of the game.

Mason County (26-5) moves on to the championship game on Thursday night to play the winner of Tuesday night's game between Augusta and St. Patrick.

Bracken County ends the season with a 16-14 record.

Royals beat Walton-Verona 88-75 for 13th consecutive win

Terrell Henry scored 25 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out six assists, KG Walton hit five 3-pointers and had 23 points and seven assists, Philip Bierley had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Riley Mastin tossed in 15 points to lead the Mason County Royals to an 88-75 win over the Walton-Verona Bearcats on Tuesday night at The Fieldhouse.

There were eight ties and two lead changes before Mason County pulled away in the third quarter.

The Royals (23-2) shot 55.2 percent from the field and ran their winning streak to 13 games. They have won 17 games in a row at home.

Mason County will travel to Hebron on Friday night to play the Connor Cougars.

Royals rout Johnson Central 86-46 for 10th straight win

For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Mason County Royals used the same winning formula — lights-out shooting, balanced scoring and good defense — for a blowout victory.

On Saturday it was an 86-46 win over the Johnson Central Eagles in the Lake Kelly Classic at Fleming County. It was the Royals' 10th straight victory and their 20th win of the season.

Mason County shot 59.3 percent from the field and for the second straight game made 10-of-20 3-point shots.

The Royals had 22 assists, 18 points off turnovers and outrebounded the Eagles 34-26. 

Riley Mastin scored a game-high 19 points, Terrell Henry followed with 18, Philip Bierley tossed in 15, Braylon Hamilton made 4-of-5 3-point shots and added 14 points. KG Walton had 10 assists.

Mason County (20-2) will host the Morgan County Cougars on Tuesday night.

Royals defeat Dixie Heights 84-57

The Mason County Royals shot 60 percent from the field and all five starters scored in double figures in an 84-57 road win over the Dixie Heights Colonels on Friday night.

Terrell Henry and KG Walton scored 15 points apiece. Riley Mastin and Philip Bierley tossed in 13 points each and Braylon Hamilton added 10 points.

Mason County (19-2) was up 42-22 at the half and led by as many as 31 points in the third quarter.

The Royals, winners of nine straight games, will play the Johnson Central Eagles on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Lake Kelly Classic at Fleming County.

Mason County wins Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament

Another banner will be raised at The Fieldhouse because the Mason County Royals are the 2023 2A state champions. 

Mason County edged the Lexington Catholic Knights 40-39 in the championship game of the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Sunday afternoon.

The Royals did not take their first lead in the game until the 3:36 mark of the third quarter when Terrell Henry's layup made the score 29-28. There would be six more lead changes.

After a 33-33 tie, Henry hit two free throws with 2:05 remaining in the game and Riley Mastin made a layup to give Mason County its biggest lead at 37-33 with 1:31 left.

Lexington Catholic guard John Reinhart missed a 3-point shot, but was fouled. He sank all three foul shots with 1:12 to go.

A steal and a basket by Rowan Williams gave the Knights their last lead at 38-37.

Henry converted an old fashioned three-point play with 31 seconds left to push the Royals back in front at 40-38.

Lexington Catholic's Brody Turner was fouled on a missed shot with six seconds remaining. He missed the first free throw and made the second.

Henry missed the front end of the 1-and-1 with five seconds left. After getting the rebound and calling timeout with four seconds to go, the Knights drove the length of the floor and missed a shot from the right corner at the buzzer.

Henry scored a game-high 14 points and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. 

Mastin had 13 points and six rebounds.

Mastin, KG Walton, Philip Bierley and Carter McClahanan were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mason County is 17-2 and has won seven straight games. The Royals will travel to Falmouth on Tuesday night to play the Pendleton County Wildcats.

The loss snapped Lexington Catholic's 19-game winning streak. The Knights are 19-2.

Royals advance to the finals of the Kentucky 2A Championships with a win over McCreary Central

The Mason County Royals will play the Lexington Catholic Knights in the championship game of the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament after beating the McCreary Central Raiders 72-54 in the semifinals on Saturday night at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

All five Mason County starters scored in double figures. Terrell Henry scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Riley Mastin had 18 points and seven rebounds. Braylon Hamilton hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points. Philip Bierley added 10 points and 10 rebounds. KG Walton scored 10 points and dished out seven assists.

The Royals were up 32-18 at halftime and led by 25 points in the third quarter.

Mason County is 16-2 and has won six straight games.

The championship game is scheduled on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CST).

Royals beat Magoffin County 72-62 and advance to semis of Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament

Five Royals scored in double figures and Mason County defeated the Magoffin County Hornets 72-62 in the quarterfinal round of the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter on Friday night.

Terrell Henry had 25 points and six rebounds. KG Walton had 14 points and five assists. Philip Bierley scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Carter McClanahan and Riley Mastin scored 10 points apiece.

Magoffin County junior guard Aden Barnett scored 34 points.

There were nine lead changes and 10 ties in the game.

Mason County's biggest lead was 12 points at 48-36 in the third quarter.

The Royals (15-2) will play McCreary Central in the semifinals today at 6 p.m. (CST).

Royals defeat Campbell County 77-73

The Mason County Royals held off Campbell County's late rally and beat the Camels 77-73 on Tuesday night at Campbell County.

After trailing by four points at halftime, the Royals outscored the Camels 28-14 in the third quarter. Mason County led 68-55 early in the fourth quarter. 

There were five ties and nine lead changes through the first three quarters.

Terrell Henry led Mason County in scoring with 23 points. Riley Mastin had 21 points and nine rebounds. KG Walton made four 3-pointers, scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out eight assists. Philip Bierley had 11 points and eight rebounds. 

Aydan Hamilton had 33 points and nine rebounds for Campbell County (9-7).

Mason County (14-2) ran its winning streak to four games. The Royals will play Magoffin County in the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament in Owensboro on Friday night.

Royals headed to 2A state for the second straight year

The Mason County Royals qualified for the Kentucky 2A Championships state basketball tournament for the second straight year with a 78-58 victory over the Estill County Engineers in the Section 6 championship game on Saturday at Greenup County.

Mason County (13-2) led by 20 points late in the second quarter and was up 42-26 at the half.

After Estill County closed the gap to 10, Mason County coach Brian Kirk pulled his starters with 5:11 to play in the third quarter.

The substitutes quickly got the Royals back on track — Grant Owens drew a charge, Conner Butler hit a 3-pointer, Owens drew another charge, Butler sank another 3-pointer, and after an Estill County basket, Carter McClanahan made one of his five 3-pointers to make the score 53-36.

Mason County was up 53-40 when the starters returned with 1:49 left in the third quarter.

The Royals led 57-40 after three quarters and took their biggest lead, 24 points, at 78-54 with one minute remaining in the game.

McClanahan and Terrell Henry scored 15 points apiece. Philip Bierley followed with 13 points and Riley Mastin added 12 points.

Mason County will be back in action on Tuesday night at Campbell County.

The Royals will play Magoffin County, the Section 8 champion, in the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament at the Owensboro Sports Center on Friday.

Royals lose to Lyon County in double overtime

The Mason County Royals led 39-23 in the second quarter, but lost to the Lyon County Lyons in double overtime in the third place game of the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic on Friday night.

Lyon County junior guard Travis Perry scored 31 points and moved into second place on the Kentucky high school basketball all-time career scoring list.

Mason County (10-2) was led in scoring by Riley Mastin with 21 points. Mastin scored all of his points in the first half.

Carter McClanahan scored a career-high 17 points for the Royals. Terrell Henry and Philip Bierley added 15 points each and KG Walton followed with 10 points.

Mason County will host the Rowan County Vikings on Monday night in the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament.

Royals beat Madison Central, advance to semis of White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic

Terrell Henry scored 17 points, Riley Mastin followed with 16 points and Braylon Hamilton added 10 points, and the Mason County Royals defeated the Madison Central Indians 50-44 on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the White, Greer & Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic.

At 10-0, Mason County is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season.

The Royals fell behind 6-0, but took control of the game by outscoring the Indians 17-9 in the second quarter. 

Mason County was up 41-33 after three quarters. Madison Central got to within two points three times in the fourth quarter, but the Royals had an answer each time and ended the game on a 5-1 run.

KG Walton had 10 assists. Philip Bierley pulled down nine rebounds. 

The Royals advance to the semifinals on Thursday at 8 p.m. against the winner of the North Oldham vs. North Laurel game.

Terrell Henry leads Royals to a 65-63 win over Bracken County

Terrell Henry scored 27 points including the game-winning jump shot with two seconds to play and the Mason County Royals edged the Bracken County Polar Bears 65-63 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the White, Greer and Maggard Holiday Classic at Lexington Catholic.

It's Mason County's 32nd consecutive win over Bracken County.

The Royals scored the first 10 points of the game and led by seven points at halftime. 

Mason County was up 41-34 midway through the third quarter, but a technical foul on the Royals swung the momentum to the Polar Bears.

Blake Reed, who poured in 47 points, including his 3,000th career point, scored eight straight points to give Bracken County its first lead at 42-41. Reed scored the final six points of the third quarter and the Polar Bears were up 50-46.

Mason County opened the fourth quarter with a 10-4 run to regain the lead. 

Bracken County answered with a 7-2 run to lead 61-58 with 2:25 to play.

The Polar Bears were up 63-60 with 1:25 remaining, but KG Walton scooped in a layup as he was falling to the floor with 1:01 to go, and Henry made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game with 31 seconds left.

With Bracken County playing for the last shot, Henry made a diving steal at mid-court, passed the ball to Walton and the Royals called timeout with seven seconds remaining.

That set up Henry's game winning basket. Then he sealed the win by intercepting a pass as the Polar Bears tried to get the ball into front court.

There were six lead changes and nine ties in the game. 

Riley Mastin scored 13 points and had nine rebounds for Mason County. Walton scored 12 points and Philip Bierley added 11 points.

Cayden Reed added 14 points for Bracken County.

Mason County plays Madison Central on Wednesday at 3:30.

Bracken County takes on Holy Cross on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Royals run their record to 6-0 with a 76-56 win over Scott

Riley Mastin had 26 points and nine rebounds, and the Mason County Royals ran their record to 6-0 with a 76-56 win over the Scott Eagles Friday night at The Fieldhouse.

Mason County led wire-to-wire and scored before the clock started. Scott (3-6) was called for a pregame technical foul, and Mastin hit both technical free throws. He scored the first six points and the Royals jumped out to a 9-2 lead.

Three other Mason County starters scored in double figures: KG Walton with 13 points, Braylon Hamilton 12 and Philip Bierley 10. 

The Royals, off to their best start since the 2014-15 season when they won their first nine games, will play Greenwood Tuesday night in the opening round of the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

Red hot Royals rout Fleming County 92-63

The Mason County Royals shot 63.3 percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers in a 92-63 rout of the Fleming County Panthers in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic tonight at The Fieldhouse.

After leading 44-26 at the half, the Royals outscored the Panthers 35-19 in the third quarter. Mason County (4-0) led 82-45 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.

The Royals shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and 66.7 percent in the second half.

Terrell Henry scored 28 points. Riley Mastin followed with 21, KG Walton 16 and Philip Bierley 11.

Fleming County (5-1) was led in scoring by Seth Hickerson with 21 points. Lucas Jolly tossed in 20 and Adam Hargett and Isaac Frye added 10 each.

The Royals' next game is Tuesday night vs. the Holmes Bulldogs in Covington.  

The Panthers will travel to Owningsville Tuesday to play the Bath County Wildcats.

Royals cruise past Bourbon County 72-33

The Mason County Royals scored the first 20 points of the game and cruised to a 72-33 win over the Bourbon County Colonels tonight at Bourbon County.

The Royals led 24-2 at the end of the first quarter and 50-13 at the half. Their biggest lead was 46 points at 61-15 in the third quarter. 

Philip Bierley scored a game-high 19 points. Riley Mastin tossed in 15 points. 

Mason County (3-0) will host the Fleming County Panthers Saturday night in the Mike Murphy Classic.

Royals use balanced attack for an upset win over Lyon County

The Mason County Royals built a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter and were able to hang on for a 75-72 win over the Lyon County Lyons tonight in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County. 

Lyon County, ranked as high as No. 9 in the state in preseason polls, is the defending champion of the 2nd Region and is favored to return to the state tournament this season.

Mason County jumped out to an 11-0 lead and was up by three at the half before trailing by three in the third quarter.

The Royals led 59-46 with five minutes left in the game. Lyon County pulled to within four at 71-67 when 3,000 career point scorer Travis Perry hit a three-pointer with 55 seconds to go. After a Mason County turnover, Perry missed a three-point shot. 

Mason County guard Carter McClahanan hit two free throws to push the lead back to five with 39 second left.

Perry made another trey with 30 seconds remaining.

McClanahan followed with a basket to make it 75-70 with 13 seconds left.

Perry scored on a putback for the final basket of the game and ended up with a game-high 28 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter.

Four Mason County players scored in double figures. Riley Mastin had a double-double with 18 points (including his 1,000th career point) and 13 rebounds before fouling out 2:24 to play. Riley did not miss a shot. He was 6-of-6 from the field (including 1-of-1 from behind the arc) and 3-of-3 on free throws. Braylon Hamilton hit four three-pointers and scored 16 points. Terrell Henry and Philip Bierley scored 14 apiece.

KG Walton dished out 10 assists before fouling out with 1:30 to go.

Philip Bierley with back-to-back double-double games and an AAU tournament championship

Philip Bierley, a rising senior at Mason County High School, closed out his AAU basketball career with back-to-back double-double games and a tournament championship today.

He scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 75-66 victory for the 17U Kentucky Select Blue team to win the 2023 Platinum Championship. 

Earlier in the day, in a semifinal win, Bierley had 14 points and 14 rebounds. 

Bierley scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds in a 55-53 victory to wrap up pool play on Saturday.

Bierley was Mason County's third-leading scorer last season averaging 8.6 points a game.

Mason County rallied to beat Calloway County in opening game of Kentucky 2A Championships

The Mason County Royals rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to defeat the Calloway County Lakers 61-57 today in the opening game of the Kentucky 2A Championship boys' basketball tournament in Owensboro.

The Royals led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 19-4 in the second period. 

Mason County (15-3) rallied and outscored Calloway County 44-28 in the second half.

Terrell Henry scored a game-high 18 points. Nate Mitchell followed with 17 points and Philip Bierley added 12 points.

Mason County (15-3) will play Lexington Catholic in the semifinals Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (CST). Lexington Catholic routed Adair County 60-27.

Mason County routs Augusta 87-56 on Bulldog Night

The Mason County Royals, playing in Maysville uniforms on Bulldog Night, hit 15 three-pointers and routed the Augusta Panthers 87-56 tonight at The Fieldhouse. 

Mason County shot 58.6% from the field and 51.7% from three-point range. The Royals had 20 assists and only four turnovers.

Philip Bierley hit six three-pointers and scored a career-high 25 points for the Royals. Terrell Henry followed with 17 points. KG Walton scored 15 points on five three-pointers. Braylon Hamilton added 14 points.

Riley Mastin led Augusta in scoring with 19 points. Chase Archibald hit three three-pointers and scored 15 points. Kason Hinson added 10 points.

Both teams return to The Fieldhouse tomorrow night for the Mike Murphy Classic. Augusta plays Felicity-Franklin at 6 p.m. followed by Mason County vs. Pikeville at 7:30 p.m.

Here are a few random notes for what looks like is going to be a rainy Saturday:

Laura Marie and former Mason County Royal Tessa Gray won their #2 doubles match 6-2, but the Cumberlands women's tennis team lost their Mid-South Conference Championship match to Lindsey Wilson 4-2 on Sunday in Owensboro. The 19-3 Patriots await a bid to the NAIA Tournament.

Mark Blakefield was T8 after finishing his rain-delayed second round of the Korn Ferry Tour's Veritex Bank Championship in Arlington, Texas. Blakefield shot a 67 in the first round on Thursday and a 66 in the second round which he finished this morning. He was at 9-under, six shots off the lead.

Mason County sophomore Philip Bierley had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but his Kentucky Select Blue 16U AAU team lost to Indiana Game Premier on Friday. Bierley scored 24 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in a 79-73 victory on Sunday.
