• Centre College freshman Keshaun Thomas had three solo tackles including one tackle for a loss (five yards) in the Colonels' 17-14 victory over Maryville on Saturday. Centre (2-0) will travel to Virginia this week to play Hampden-Sydney.

• St. Patrick senior Bria Bauer collected her 1,000th career dig in the Lady Saints' match vs. the Paris Lady Hounds on Tuesday night at The Shamrock. The Lady Saints will host Ludlow on Wednesday night.

• The Mason County Royals' home game vs. the Rowan County Vikings on Friday night is a Rae of Sunshine Football Game to raise awareness about mental health. The theme is Yellow Out.

Keshaun Thomas signs with Centre College

Mason County senior Keshaun Thomas signed Tuesday to continue his academic and football careers at Centre College.

Thomas played quarterback and defensive back for the Royals, and Centre recruited him as a defensive back.

He is third in the Mason County record book in both career touchdown passes (49) and career passing yards (5,096).

Thomas is also a member of the Mason County track and field team. He was 12th in the 200 meter dash, 15th in the 60 meter dash and 15th in the long jump at the KHSAA Class 2A State Indoor Track and Field Championships earlier this month.

Royals lose to Lawrence County in regular season finale

The Mason County Royals closed out the regular season with a 20-14 loss to the Lawrence County Bulldogs in Louisa on Friday night.

All of the scoring took place in the first and third quarters.

After Lawrence County scored first, Mason County answered a minute and 33 seconds later when Keshaun Thomas threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Landon Scilley.

The Bulldogs went up 20-7 before Kenton Johnson rushed nine yards for the Royals' second touchdown.

Mason County took over on downs at the Lawrence County one-yard line with 1:31 left in the game, but the Royals' drive ended with an interception. 

The Royals (6-4) will host the Boyd County Lions next week in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs. Boyd County beat Mason County 45-21 on September 8 at Mason County.

Royals fall to CovCath

The Mason County Royals' four-game winning streak was snapped by a 50-14 loss to No. 3 Covington Catholic at home Friday night.

The Colonels won the district championship. The Royals are the district runners-up.

Mason County scored first when Keshaun Thomas threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Landon Scilley with 3:58 left in the first quarter. But Covingtion Catholic scored 29 straight points before Thomas ran one yard for a touchdown with 6:18 to play in the third quarter.

The Colonels scored 21 unanswered points to run their record to 9-0.

Mason County (6-3) will close out the regular season next week at Lawrence County.

Royals break two school records in win over Grant County

The Mason County Royals broke two school records in their 50-6 victory over the Grant County Braves Thursday night. 

CJ Arthur's 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was two yards longer than the record set by Andre Brooks in a 55-0 rout of the Lewis County Lions in 1999 and matched by Bryan Sweet in a 35-14 victory over the Boyd County Lions in 2003.

Keshaun Thomas' 95-yard touchdown pass to Cole Horch broke the previous record of a 91-yard touchdown pass from Chris O'Hearn to Tony Jackson in a 14-13 win over the Rowan County Vikings in 1984. 

Royals rout Grant County

CJ Arthur returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and the Mason County Royals never looked back in a 50-6 rout of the Grant County Braves Thursday night at Mason County.

Keshaun Thomas passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more scores.

Mason County is 6-2 overall and 3-0 in district play. 

The Royals will host the Covington Catholic next week in Senior Night.

Royals beat Harrison County 40-13

Keshaun Thomas passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores to lead the Mason County Royals to a 40-13 win over the Harrison County Thorobreds in Cynthiana Friday night.

Landon Scilley had two touchdown receptions. Teegin Routt and Kenton Johnson each had a rushing touchdown.

Trey Walker rushed for 107 yards.

The Royals scored 27 unanswered points to run their overall record to 5-2. They are 2-0 in district games. 

Mason County will host the Graves County Braves next Thursday night.

Eight Royals scored a touchdown in Mason County's 52-0 victory over Holmes

Eight different players scored a touchdown as the Mason County Royals opened district play with a 52-0 victory over the Holmes Bulldogs in Covington Friday night.

Bryce Moran, CJ Arthur, Trey Walker, Kenton Johson and Keshaun Thomas each rushed for a touchdown in the first half.

Teegin Routt threw a touchdown pass to Cole Horch in the third quarter.

Micah Payne ran for a touchdown at the end of the third quarter and Hayden Horn rushed for the final touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Mason County had 401 yards of total offense (278 rushing and 123 passing).

Holmes only had 97 yards of offense, all rushing.

The final 16:47 was played with a running clock.

With 26 victories, Joe Wynn the second winningest coach at Mason County.

The Royals (4-2) will try to Cynthiana next week to play the Harrison County Thorobreds.

Royals fall to Boyd County 45-21

The Mason County Royals were outscored 28-7 in the second  half including 21-0 in the fourth quarter in 45-21 loss to the Boyd County Lions on Homecoming Friday night.

Boyd County led 10-0 in the first quarter, but Keshaun Thomas threw two long touchdown passes to Landon Scilley to put the Royals in front at 14-10.

 

The Lions led 24-14 before Thomas connected with Scilley on another touchown with 2:28 left in the third quarter.

But the Royals committed three turnovers in the fourth quarter and Boyd County pulled away.

Boyd County quarterback Rhett Holbrook ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more.

Mason County (2-2) will play at Rowan County next week.

Mason County beats Fleming County 49-21

Keshaun Thomas rushed for two touchdowns and threw four touchdown passes as the Mason County Royals used big plays on offense and stingy red zone to beat the Fleming County 49-21 at Mason County Friday night.

On the first play of the game wide receiver Landon Scilley threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to Cole Horch.

The Royals led 21-0 in the second quarter and 28-7 in the third quarter. Fleming County cut the deficit to seven at 28-21 with 9:36 left in the fourth quarter, but Mason County scored 21 unanswered points for their second win of the season.

Mason County stopped five Fleming County drives in the red zone including two at the one-yard line.

The Royals (2-1) will host the Boyd County Lions on Homecoming next week.

Royals beat beat Montgomery County 34-14

Cole Horch returned the opening kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and the Mason County Royals scored 20 unanswered points in the second half for a 34-14 victory over the Montgomery County Indians in the Meadowview Regional Medical Center Kickoff Classic Friday night.

The start of the game was delayed 15 minutes by lightning and there was a 30-minute lightning delay in the first quarter.

With senior quarterback Keshaun Thomas out with an injury, Teggin Routt filled in and threw touchdown passes to Max Arrasmith and Landon Scilley.

Kenton Johnson rushed for a touchdown and Joey Staggs returned a fumble 93 yards for a touchdown.

Mason County (1-1) will host Fleming County next week.

Lady Royals and Royals runners-up in state meet, Young and Barrett are state champions

The Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams were both runners-up, while Lexi Young and AJ Barrett won events at the KTCCCA Class AA Indoor State Championships on Saturday in Louisville.

The Lady Royals were edged by North Oldham by a single point, 61-60. The Royals finished with 66.5 points, 12.5 points behind the Bourbon County Colonels.

Young is the state champion in the high jump (5-00.00) and the state runner-up in the long jump (16-10). 

Barrett is the state champion in the pole vault clearing 14 feet, four inches. That's a new school record.

Two other Mason County athletes won medals: Austin Moreland, third in the 60 meter hurdles (9.37) and third in the 400 meter dash (53.00) and Keshaun Thomas, third in the triple jump (40-08.25).

Young set a new school record in the 60 meter dash (8:05).

Layla Henderson set new school records in the 1500 meter run (5:04.74) and the 3000 meter run (10:52.18).

Peyton Ullery set a new school record in the 1500 meter run (4:22.05).

CJ Arthur tied the school record in the 60 meter dash (7.29).

Next up is the outdoor track and field season.

Royals fall to Bardstown 38-28 in state semifinals

In a Class AAA state semifinal showdown between two athletic 13-0 football teams, the Bardstown Tigers defeated the Mason County Royals 38-28 tonight in Bardstown.

The two teams combined to score 35 points in the second quarter, and Bardstown led 28-20 at halftime.

After a scoreless third quarter, Mason County tied the game at 28-28 early in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard run by Brady Sanders and a two-point conversion run by Keshaun Thomas.

Three plays later, Bardstown took the lead for good when running back Tyleeq Willliams scored his fifth touchdown of the night.

Mason County went three-and-out on its next possession, and Bardstown padded its lead with a 23-yard field goal with 2:28 remaining in the game.

The Royals final possession ended with an interception.

Thomas, Mason County's junior quarterback, threw two touchdown passes (one to Isaac Marshall and one to Landon Scilley) and ran for a touchdown in addition to his conversion run.

Williams, Bardstown's 5-foot-5, 150 pound junior running back rushed for 175 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. He also had a touchdown reception.

Bardstown will play Christian Academy-Louisville in the Class AAA state championship game next week at Kroger Field on the University of Kentucky.

Mason County's 13 wins are a school record.

Mason County defeats Greenup County 27-14 for a school record 13th win and a trip to the state semifinals

The undefeated Mason County Royals are headed to the state semifinals with a school-record 13 wins after beating the Greenup County Musketeers 27-14 Friday night at home in the third round of the Class AAA playoffs. 

The Royals outscored the Musketeers 20-0 in the second half for the third region championship in program history and the first since 2003.

Keyshaun Thomas threw two touchdown passes to KG Walton and one to Isaac Marshall. 

Caden Clark-Roberts rushed 27 yards for a touchdown.

Terrell Henry had three huge defensive plays in the second half: two interceptions and a tackle that stopped Greenup County on 4th-and-one at the Royals' 11 yard line. His second pick was in the end zone with 2:24 left in the game. Mason County was then able to run out the clock.

The Royals will play the Bardstown Tigers in Bardstown next week. The Tigers, also 13-0, defeated Union County 66-33 Friday night.

Christian Academy-Louisville will host Ashland in the other semifinal game.

Royals advance to the third round of the playoffs with a 25-0 victory Estill County

The Mason County Royals defeated the Estill County Engineers 25-0 tonight at home in the second round of the Class AAA football playoffs. 

It's the Royals' second straight shutout, and Mason County is 12-0 for just the second time in program history. 

Four different Royals scored touchdowns: Caden Clark-Roberts on a 70-yard run, Isaac Marshall on a 25-yard pass from Keshaun Thomas, KG Walton on a 37-yard run and Thomas on a one-yard quarterback sneak.

Mason County will host the Greenup County Musketeers in the third round next week. The Royals beat the Muskeeteers 34-29 in the final game of the regular season. 

Greenup County defeated Lawrence County 28-7 tonight.

Royals run their record to 11-0 with a 33-0 first-round victory over Rockcastle

Mason County junior quarterback Keshaun Thomas passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Royals to a 33-0 victory over the the Rockcastle County Rockets in the first round of the Class AA playoffs tonight at home. The Royals are 11-0.

After a scoreless first quarter, Thomas threw touchdown passes to Landon Scilley and Isaac Marshall in the second quarter.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, Thomas ran 46 yards for a touchdown. He scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak late in the fourth quarter.

Brady Sanders ran 37 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Mason County will host the Estill County Engineers in the second round next week. Estill County routed Lewis County 52-18.

Royals beat Greenup County 34-29 to close out a 10-0 regular season.

The Mason County Royals completed a 10-0 regular season, just the third in school history, by defeating the Greenup County Musketeers 34-29 at home tonight. 

The game was not decided until Terrell Henry intercepted a Greenup County pass on the final play of the game. It was Henry's second pick of the night. 

Henry's first interception was followed by a 16-yard touchdown pass from Keshaun Thomas to Isaac Marshall that gave the Royals a 34-14 lead with 10:29 to play in the fourth quarter.

Greenup County answered with back-to-back touchdowns and it was a one score game with a 1:22 remaining. After going three-and-out, the Royals punted with 19 seconds to go. Two plays later, Henry picked off a pass over the middle as time expired.

Mason County got off to a fast start by recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff return. Then, on the Royals' first snap, they surprised the Musketeers with a trick play--wide receiver KG Walton hit a wide open Henry on an option pass for a touchdown 17 seconds into the game.

Thomas scored on a one-yard run to put the Royals up 14-0 in the first quarter.

Two Mason County turnovers led to two Greenup County touchdowns and the score was tied.

Brady Sanders rushed 16 yards for a touchdown to put the Royals back on top with 38 seconds to play in the first half.

Thomas ran 70 yards for a touchdown on Mason County's first drive of the second half.

Mason County will host Rockcastle County in the first round of the playoffs next Friday.

Royals run record to 9-0 with a 37-24 road victory Powell County

The Mason County Royals ran their record to 9-0 with a 37-24 victory over the Powell County Pirates tonight in Stanton.

It was a five-point game until Keshaun Thomas threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Terrell Henry with 17 seconds left in the first half. It was the second time in the game Thomas and Henry connected on a touchdown pass.

Both teams scored six points in the second half.

Mason County goes 4-0 in district play. The Royals will close out the regular season next week at home vs. Greenup County.

Royals clinch second straight district title and No. 1 seed with a 48-6 win over Lewis County

The Mason County Royals clinched their second straight district title and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs with a 48-6 victory over the the Lewis County Lions at home tonight.

Keshaun Thomas threw three touchdown passes. Brady Sanders rushed for two touchdowns and had an interception.

The Royals led 36-0 with the 3:24 to play in the second quarter and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.

Mason County is 8-0 overall and 3-0 in district games. The Royals travel to Stanton next week to play the Powell County Pirates.
