Great Crossing defeats Montgomery County in state semis

Mr. Basketball and University of Kentucky signee Malachi Moreno had 26 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two steals to lead the Great Crossing Warhawks to a 70-49 victory over the Montgomery County Indians on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the UK HealthCare Boys' Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Montgomery County had a two-point lead at halftime, but was outscored 46-23 in the second half.

Cayden Reed led Montgomery County with 15 points. Luke Fawns and Dawson Gentry scored 10 points apiece.

Great Crossing will play the Bowling Green Purples in the championship game. Bowling Green defeated South Oldham 73-51 in the other semifinal game.

Montgomery County hits 16 3s and routs Lawrence County 98-72

 The Montgomery County Indians made a tournament-record 16 3-pointers and cruised past the Lawrence County Bulldogs 98-72 in the opening round of the UK HealthCare Boys' Sweet 16 on Thursday at Rupp Arena.

Montgomery County (23-10) led 25-15 at the end of the first quarter, 50-30 at halftime and 76-49 at the end of the third quarter.

Luke Fawns hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points for the Indians. Tyce Jarvis tossed in 21 points and Cayden Reed had 15 points and 10 assists.

Montgomery County shot 53.5% from the field including 16 of 32 from 3-point range.

The Indians will play North Laurel at 6 p.m. on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Reed's 3-pointer at the buzzer sends Montgomery County to state

Cayden Reed banked in a 3-pointer from the left wing at the buzzer to give the Montgomery County Indians a 59-56 win over the George Rogers Clark Cardinals in the championship game of the 10th Region Tournament on Wednesday night at Montgomery County.

GRC led 53-43 early in the fourth quarter after trailing by nine points in the first quarter.

There were six ties and 10 lead changes in the game.

Luke Fawns led Montgomery County (22-10) in scoring with 18 points. Reed finished with 16 and Andrew Terry added 12.

Malachi Ashford led GRC (27-6) with 19 points. Maddox Hager scored 15 points and Montez Gay tossed in 10.

Montgomery County will play 15th Region champion Lawrence County on March 27 at 1:30 p.m. in the UK HealthCare Boys' Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.

Royals fall to Montgomery County in region semifinals

The Mason County Royals saw their season come to an end on Monday night with an 86-73 loss to the Montgomery County Indians in the semifinals of the 10th Region Tournament at Montgomery County, but they did not go down without a fight.

The Indians routed the Royals 82-42 on January 25.

In Monday night's game, there were nine ties and seven lead changes in the game.

Mason County (17-14) shot 65.2% from the field in the first half and led 39-37 at halftime, but Montgomery County (21-10) took control of the game by outscoring the Royals 31-13 in the third quarter.

Montgomery County led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter.

The loss snapped Mason County's eight-game winning streak.

Cayden Reed had 32 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Montgomery County which has won four straight games and 10 of its last 11. Luke Fawns followed with 16 points, Tyce Jarvis had 15, Andrew Terry 13 and Dawson Gentry 10.

Garryon McClain led Mason County with 27 points. Braeden Myrick made five 3-pointers and scored 26 points. Cole Horch had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Montgomery County scored 18 points off Mason County's 17 turnovers.

The Indians shot 50% from the field, 7 of 23 (30.4%) from behind the arc and 19 of 30 (63.35) from the free throw line.

The Royals shot 54.2% from the field, 8 of 13 (61.5%) from 3-point range and 13 of 18 (72.2%) from the free throw line.

McClain and Myrick and were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Montgomery County and George Rogers Clark will meet in the championship game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. GRC beat Nicholas County 87-56 in the other semifinal game.

Royals routed by Montgomery County

Mason County fell behind 16-0, shot 6.67% from 3-point range for the game and were routed by the Montgomery County Indians 82-42 on Saturday in the Lake Kelly Classic at Fleming County.

Luke Fawns hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points. Tyce Jarvis had15 points and seven rebounds while Dawson Gentry finished with 13 points for Montgomery County (10-8). The Indians also got nine points, four rebounds and three assists from Cayden Reed in his first game eligible since transferring from Mason County.

Braeden Myrick and Cole Horch scored nine points apiece for Mason County (9-8).

Montgomery County led 22-4 at the end of the first quarter and 40-16 at halftime. The running clock started with 4:54 remaining in the third quarter. The biggest lead was 43 points at 83-40.

Montgomery County shot 53.7% from the field including 13-of-29 (44.8%) from beyond the arc. 

Mason County shot 45% from the field, but was just 1-of-15 from long range.

The Royals will host the Augusta Panthers on Wednesday night.
