Mason Co. hosts first indoor track meet of the season

The Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association indoor track meet was held Saturday at the US Bank-Mason County Schools Indoor Athletic Complex. Mason County won the boys' meet and took third place in the girls' meet. Mason County junior Madison Paver won the girls' 55 meter dash (7.92). Mason County freshman Nick Robinson won the boys' 800 meter run (2:23.33). Mason County's team of Valerie Rice, Raylee Kirkland, Cara Woods and Julia Woods won the girls' 4x800 meter relay. Julia Woods to All-Academic All State First Team

Mason County sophomore Julia Woods was named to the Class AA Cross Country All-Academic All-State First Team. Qualifications are either a top 25 finish in the state meet or have been ranked in the top 20 in one of the four ranking polls. The grade point average must be 3.75 or better.

It's time to catch up on some of news and notes:

• Three Mason County cross country athletes have received all-state recognition. Julia Woods, Valerie Rice and Nick Robinson were named all-state honorable mention in Class 2A by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. Woods is Mason County's Female Runner of the Year. Robinson is Mason County's Male Runner of the Year. The awards were presented at the team banquet Tuesday night;
• The Wendy's High School Heisman Award School Winners have been announced. Daniel Yeary is the winner at St. Patrick, and Faith Weddle is the winner at Mason County. The Wendy's High School Heisman Program recognizes high school seniors for excellence in academics, athletics and community/school leadership;
• Shawnee State University freshman guard Justin Lang scored four points and had four rebounds and two steals as the Bears' won their home opener 100-64 over UC-Clermont Tuesday night; 
• Former Mason County Royal Chris Stapleton is coaching basketball at Pendleton County Middle School. His team picked up its first tournament championship last weekend in the 3rd Annual Erv Whitford Memorial Tournament at Silver Grove. Stapleton guided his team to wins over Ludlow, Newport Central Catholic and R.A. Jones of Boone County;

Lady Royals 6th, Royals 23rd at state meet

The Mason County Lady Royals finished in sixth place and the Royals took 23rd place at the KHSAA Class 2A cross country meet today at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Sophomore Julia Woods led the Lady Royals with a 26th place finish (21:16.75). Freshman Nick Robinson was the Royals' top runner in 29th place (17:42.74). Here are links to the complete results:

Lady Royals three-peat as XC Region champions

The Mason County Lady Royals are cross country region champions for the third straight year. The Lady Royals won the Class 2A Region 6 Championship today at the Mason County course. Mason County sophomore Julia Woods was the runner-up in a time of 20:23.99. Three other Lady Royals also medalled- sophomore Valerie Rice (6th place, 21:23.71), eighth grader Cara Woods (7th place, 21:32.83) and eighth grader Sierra Anderson (10th place 22:02.94). Fleming County finished second, East Carter third and Russell fourth. The top four teams advance to the state meet next week. East Carter freshman Macy Dyer was the individual region champion in a time of 20:03.59.

Fairview and Ashland win Area 7 Championships at Mason County

The Fairview girls and the Ashland boys took the team titles at the Area 7 Championship Saturday at the Mason County cross country course. The Mason County girls, led by Julia Woods (third), finished third. Nick Robinson led the Mason County boys with a sixth place finish. Mason County eighth grader Cara Woods won the girls' middle school race. The winner of each race is the Area 7 Runner of the Year. The top seven in each race are first team Area 7. Lady Royals 2nd, Royals 4th in GRC Coaches Classic

The Mason County Lady Royals finished second and the Mason County Royals took fourth place in the GRC Coaches Classic Saturday at Lykins Park in Winchester. Julia Woods led the Lady Royals with a second place finish. Valarie Rice was fifth and Cara Woods was eighth. Nick Robinson led the Royals with a second place finish. Nathan Woods was third. Mason County girls 5th, boys 10th in Scott Classic

The Mason County girls took fifth place and the Mason County Royals finished 10th in the Scott Classic Saturday. Mason County sophomore Julia Woods finished second in the individual competition, nine seconds behind the winner in a time of 20:56.23. Cara Woods also medalled. Mason County was second in the girls' varsity meet and seventh in the boys' varsity Saturday at the Mason County Cross Country Invitational. Lady Royals varsity and middle school take first place in Blue Jay XC Invitational

The Mason County Lady Royals varsity and middle school teams opened the season Saturday with first place finishes in the Blue Jay Cross Country Invitational in Ripley. All five varsity girls medalled- Valerie Rice in second place, Julia Woods third, Sarah Bellingham 10th, Raylee Kirkland 11th and Carley Moore 12th. The girls middle school team was led by Sierra Anderson in third place and Cara Woods in fourth place. The boys varsity was led by Nick Robinson's second place finish and Nathan Woods in ninth place.

Mason Co. girls 2nd, boys 4th at Fleming Co. All-Comers

Mason County took second place in the girls' meet and fourth place in the boys' meet at the Fleming County All-Comers Tuesday night. First place finishes by Mason County athletes include:

• Iretta Carpenter, girls' 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles;
• Julia Woods, girls' pole vault;
• Girls' 4x800 meter relay
• Tee King, 100 meter dash;
• Nick Robinson, boys 1600 meter run

Adkins 2nd in the 55m and 3rd in the 400m, four new school records set at Mason-Dixon Games

Mason County senior Seth Adkins finished second in the 55 meters (6.81) and third in the 400 meters (53.43) Saturday in the 50th Annual Mason-Dixon Games in Louisville. Adkins' time in the 400 meters is a new school record. Sophomore Valerie Rice finished 8th and set a new school record in the 800 meters in a time of 2:35.20. Two Mason County relay teams also set school records- the boys' 4x800 meter relay team of junior Connor Appelman, senior Jim Myers, 8th grader Nick Robinson and junior Nathan Woods (9:17.23), and the girls' 4x800 meter relay team of freshman Sarah Bellingham, freshman Raylee Kirkland, sophomore Valerie Rice and freshman Julia Woods (11:01.38). The Lady Royals' fifth place finish in the team standings is the best in school history. Mason County was ninth in the boys' meet. Here is a link to the results.

Adkins 3rd in the 200 meter dash, girls 4x800 team sets school record

Mason County senior Seth Adkins finished third in the boys' 200 meter dash in a time of 22.80 in the Wildcat Classic indoor track and field meet at the University of Kentucky Saturday. The girls' 4x800 meter relay team of Valerie Rice, Sarah Bellingham, Raylee Kirkland and Julia Woods set a new school record- 11:16.70- and finished 7th. Those same four girls had set the previous school record last year at the state indoor championships. Senior Jim Myers took 10th place in the boys' two-mile run with a time of 10:45.39. Mason County will host indoor meets the next five Saturdays.

Mason County freshman Julia Woods has been named to the girls' Class 2A Cross Country All State First Team by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. Woods won her third straight region championship this year. Mason County senior Jim Myers received All State Honorable Mention recognition.

Lady Royals 8th, Royals 26th in state XC meets

The Mason County girls took eighth place and the Mason County boys finished in 26th place in the Class 2A state cross country meets today at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Freshman Julia Woods led the Lady Royals with a 14th place finish in a time of 20:58.56. Junior Nathan Woods had the Royals' best finish- 71st place- in a time of 18.44.74. Woods and Lady Royals win region, Royals 2nd

Mason County freshman Julia Woods won her third straight individual regional title and the Lady Royals won the team title for the second consecutive year today at the Class AA Region 6 cross country meet at Boyd County. The Royals finished second in the boys' regional. Both teams advance to the state meet. It is the Mason County boys' first regional trophy since 1973. Woods won with a time of 20:35.90. Two other Lady Royals- freshman Raylee Kirkland and sophomore Valerie Rice- finished in the top 10. Kirkland was fourth and Rice was sixth.
The Royals were led by three top 10 runners- senior Jim Myers (6th), eighth grader Nick Robinson (7th) and junior Nathan Woods (8th). The state meet will be held next Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Here are links to the Region 6 results:
