News and notes

It's time to catch up on some of news and notes:

  • Three Mason County cross country athletes have received all-state recognition. Julia Woods, Valerie Rice and Nick Robinson were named all-state honorable mention in Class 2A by the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association. Woods is Mason County's Female Runner of the Year. Robinson is Mason County's Male Runner of the Year. The awards were presented at the team banquet Tuesday night;
  • The Wendy's High School Heisman Award School Winners have been announced. Daniel Yeary is the winner at St. Patrick, and Faith Weddle is the winner at Mason County. The Wendy's High School Heisman Program recognizes high school seniors for excellence in academics, athletics and community/school leadership;
  • Shawnee State University freshman guard Justin Lang scored four points and had four rebounds and two steals as the Bears' won their home opener 100-64 over UC-Clermont Tuesday night; 
  • Former Mason County Royal Chris Stapleton is coaching basketball at Pendleton County Middle School. His team picked up its first tournament championship last weekend in the 3rd Annual Erv Whitford Memorial Tournament at Silver Grove. Stapleton guided his team to wins over Ludlow, Newport Central Catholic and R.A. Jones of Boone County;
