Another big performance by Trinity QB Zane Johnson

Trinity junior quarterback Zane Johnson completed 15 of 29 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns as the Shamrocks defeated Carmel, Indiana 41-28 on Friday night in Louisville.

Zane, the son of former Mason County Royal Jordan Johnson, has passed for 688 yards and 11 touchdowns with only one interception this season.

Trinity (3-1) will head across town this Friday to play the Male Bulldogs.

Trinity routs Frederick Douglass in "Mason County connections" game

Zane Johnson completed 8 of 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns and the Trinity Shamrocks routed the Frederick Douglass Broncos 37-0 in Louisville on Friday night.

Frederick Douglass quarterback Brady Ross competed 4 of 7 passes for 21 yards and an interception.

Carter Ross rushed three times for zero yards.

Johnson is the son of former Mason County football player Jordan Johnson.

The Ross brothers are the sons of former Mason County basketball player Jon Ross.

Trinity returned the opening kickoff of 86 yards for a touchdown and rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns.

Sons of Mason County alums are quarterbacks at Trinity and Frederick Douglass

Two high school quarterbacks who are the sons of former Mason County athletes opened their junior seasons last week and will meet in a Class 6A showdown this Friday in Louisville.

Zane Johnson, the son of former Mason County football player Jordan Johnson, completed 4 of 5 passes for 114 yards and four touchdowns in Trinity's 62-0 win over Pleasure Ridge Park.

Brady Ross, the son of former Mason County basketball player Jon Ross, passed for 48 yards and one touchdown in Frederick Douglass' 21-20 double overtime loss to Highlands.

Brady's brothers, Carter and Jackson, are also on the team. The Ross brothers are triplets.

Carter, a running back, had three carries for 38 yards and a touchdown last week.

Jackson is a wide receiver.

Jon Ross is a 1998 graduate of Mason County High School. 

Jordan Johnson graduated from Mason County High School in 2000.

Sunday notes

 Here are some Sunday notes from a busy sports weekend:

• The Mason County archery team was the runner-up at the Pendleton County Winter Warm-Up 2024 on Saturday. The Royals had a team score of 3,298. Harrison County won the tournament with a score of 3,391. Mason County senior Bryce Pollitt was the individual champion with a score of 294 and 24 Tens. Mason County senior Laurelle Setters finished third out of 104 girls. Her score was 286 and she had 19 Tens.

• The Mason County wrestling teams opened the season on Saturday. Caleb Roy was the Royals' Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Warhawk Duals at Great Crossing. He went 3-1 with two pins and one major decision. Breanna Rosenberg was the Lady Royals' Most Outstanding Wrestler with a sixth place solo finish and three pins.

• Trinity sophomore quarterback Zane Johnson, the son of former Mason County Royal Jordan Johnson, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Class 6A state championship football game after leading the Shamrocks to a 42-23 victory over the Ryle Raiders on Saturday. Johnson completed 18-of-24 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. That's two straight state titles for Trinity with Johnson as the starting quarterback. The Shamrocks have 29 state championships.

• The Mason County Royals have shot 51.5% from the field through the first three games of the season. The Royals shot 57.9% vs. Rowan County and 56.9% vs. Augusta.

• Jake Feldhaus is averaging a double-double — 17.7 points and 14 rebounds — for the Madison Central Indians who are off to a 3-0 start. He scored 21 points vs. Lafayette and pulled down 19 rebounds vs. Corbin.

• The Maysville Miners suffered their third straight loss on Saturday night when they fell to the Ohio Kings 120-114 in Cincinnati.

Trinity freshman QB Zane Johnson is the son of former Royal Jordan Johnson

 Zane Johnson, the freshman starting quarterback for the varsity football team at Class 6A powerhouse Trinity High School in Louisville, is the son of former Mason County Royal Jordan Johnson.

In his first start, which was the Shamrocks' third game of the season, Zane completed 18 of 33 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown in a 34-7 loss to Center Grove (Indiana).

He completed 15 of 18 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns with an interception in a 41-14 win over Carmel, Indiana, and completed 14 of 33 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions in a 37-20 loss to Male.

For the season, Zane has passed for 637 yards and seven touchdowns with four interceptions.

Trinity, a 27-time state champion, plays 13-time state champion St. Xavier Friday night at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium, the home of the Louisville Cardinals.

Jordan Johnson is a 2000 graduate of Mason County High School. He was the head coach at Waggener High School in Louisville from 2015 to 2018.
