Royals go 1-1, take 3rd place in David Irey Foundation Invitational

The Mason County Royals went 1-1 and took third place in the 3rd Annual David Irey Foundation Invitational at Beechwood Saturday.

The Royals lost to the Beechwood Tigers 6-5 in the semifinals. Mason County pitchers walked seven and hit five batters.

The Royals bounced back in the third place game with a 10-6 victory over the Southern Trojans.

Mason County catcher Carson Pugh was named Most Valuable Player of the game. Pugh went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. 

The Royals (14-5) will be back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Powell County.

Royals end spring break trip with a 4-3 victory

The Mason County Royals rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and beat the Normandy Invaders of Parma, Ohio 4-3 Thursday in their final game at Tampa Bay Spring Training.

The Royals only had three hits off Kent State signee Ben Rabatin, but the hard-throwing right-hander threw two wild pitches that brought home the tying run and the go-ahead run.

Rabatin, who hit 94 MPH on the radar gun several times, struck out 11 and walked one.

Mason County starter Landon Scilley allowed three runs on six hits, strking out nine and walking one in six innings.

Royals reliever Cameron Rosel walked the first three batters in the seventh inning, but pitched out of the jam to record the save. With the infield in, Mason County forced out a runner at the plate on a ground ball to short. Rosel fanned the next batter and a fly out to center field gave the Royals their third win of the spring break trip.

Trey Cracraft, Eli Porter and Connor Butler each had a hit. Porter and Carson Pugh were both hit by pitches.

Mason County (9-2) will play the Estill County Engineers Monday at 6 p.m. at Estill County in a semifinal game of the Kentucky 2A Championship Section 6 Tournament.

Royals beat Powell County 9-23 in 2A sectional tournament

The Mason County Royals defeated the Powell County Pirates 9-3 in their first game of the sectional tournament of the Kentucky 2A Championships on Monday.

It was the home opener for the Royals who ran their record to 3-0. 

Eli Porter was the winning pitcher and he had five RBI.

Cray Fite hit a three-run homer. Fite, Porter, Carson Pugh and Landon Scilley had multiple hits.

Mason County advances to play the winner of the March 30 game between Estill County and Fleming County.

The Kentucky 2A Championships state baseball tournament is scheduled April 21-22 in Owensboro.

The Royals are back in action today at 5:30 at home vs. the Bishop Brossart Mustangs.

Royals beat Tates Creek 24-21 for their first 3-0 start since 2014

Keyshaun Thomas threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Carson Pugh with 47 seconds left in the game and the Mason County Royals defeated the Class 6A Tates Creek Commodores 24-21 in Lexington on Friday night.

Pugh intercepted a pass in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

Mason County is 3-0 for the first time since 2014.

Thomas completed 10-of-21 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

Henry had three receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Austin Moreland kicked a 26-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Mason County has a bye week next week before playing at Boyd County on September 16.
