Bryan Gregory named District Athletic Director at Mason County

Bryan Gregory is Mason County's new District Athletic Director. He was named to succeed Chris O'Hearn who stepped down after one year in the role.

Maysville  Mason County Schools would like to announce the resignation of Chris O’Hearn as District Athletic Director. Coach O’Hearn served in this role for the 2024-25 school year. The current Mason County Middle School Dean of Students, Bryan Gregory, has accepted the position of District Athletic Director. Mr. Gregory will oversee all athletics at Mason County Middle School and Mason County High School. Mr. Gregory brings a strong background in education and a passion for student success both on and off the field.


Prior to his role as the Dean of Students at MCMS, he served as the Offensive Coordinator at Berea Schools for three years before moving to Mason County. While at Mason County, he taught science, coached Middle School baseball for three years, and most recently, was an assistant football coach at MCMS, serving in that role for the past five years.


Mr. Gregory’s dedication, leadership experience, and commitment to student success make him an outstanding choice to lead our district’s athletic programs into the future.

Chris O'Hearn hired as Mason County's director athletic director

Former Mason County High School principal and boys' basketball coach Chris O'Hearn has been hired as Mason County's district athletic director. Here is the press release:

The Mason County School Board is proud to announce the hiring of Mr. Chris O’Hearn as the District Athletic Director. Mr. O’Hearn will oversee all athletics at Mason County Middle School and Mason County High School.  Chris is a retired teacher, coach, co-athletic director, assistant principal, and principal of the Mason County School District.  

A Maysville native, Mr. O’Hearn spent twenty-seven years in public education, concluding his time as the principal of Mason County High School in 2018.  He currently serves as the County Commissioner of District 2.  As a former Royal, Chris is a member of the prestigious 10th Region Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and as a coach. As a head coach, Mr. O’Hearn began his career at Nicholas County High School, where the Blue Jackets won the Class “A” Regional Championship in 1994.  His basketball tenure on the Royals sideline spanned sixteen years, eleven as the head coach.  His Royals basketball teams were crowned 10th Region Champions in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, to go along with nine 39th District Championships, a final four appearance in 2010, and a KHSAA state championship in 2008.  Mr. O'Hearn was named 10th Region Coach of the Year four times and the KABC 10th Region Coach of the Year in 2005, 2009, and 2014.  He was the Head Coach for the Kentucky/Indiana All-Star game in 2014. 

It is with great excitement that I accept the position of District Athletic Director for Mason County Schools,” said O’Hearn.  “It is refreshing to see a school board and a superintendent recognize the impact that athletics has on our student-athletes. I look forward to working with the administration at Mason County High School and Mason County Middle School, along with the many coaches and student-athletes. We will work closely to provide opportunities that will enrich and positively affect students' lives.”

As a student-athlete himself, Mr. O’Hearn participated in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis during his time as a student at MCHS.  During his career, he continued to work for the betterment of athletics and student-athletes in the state of Kentucky by serving as a 10th/11th Region Policy Board Representative for three years, a KHSAA Board of Control member for three years, and continues to serve on the Kentucky High School Coaches Association Executive Committee, a seat he has held since 2010.

Royals break two school records in win over Grant County

The Mason County Royals broke two school records in their 50-6 victory over the Grant County Braves Thursday night. 

CJ Arthur's 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was two yards longer than the record set by Andre Brooks in a 55-0 rout of the Lewis County Lions in 1999 and matched by Bryan Sweet in a 35-14 victory over the Boyd County Lions in 2003.

Keshaun Thomas' 95-yard touchdown pass to Cole Horch broke the previous record of a 91-yard touchdown pass from Chris O'Hearn to Tony Jackson in a 14-13 win over the Rowan County Vikings in 1984.

Mason County's 1967 state champion golf team recognized



Mason County's 1967 state champion golf team was recognized at halftime of the Mason County vs. Lexington Catholic basketball game tonight.

In the photo from left to right are Charlie Calvert, Fred Hester, Coach Steve Barnett, Steve Poynter and Sparky McDowell.

Two other members of the team- Joe Traxel and Bob Cochran- were unable to attend.

Mason County High School principal Chris O'Hearn presented medals to the team members and Coach Barnett.
