Chris O'Hearn hired as Mason County's director athletic director

Former Mason County High School principal and boys' basketball coach Chris O'Hearn has been hired as Mason County's district athletic director. Here is the press release:

The Mason County School Board is proud to announce the hiring of Mr. Chris O’Hearn as the District Athletic Director. Mr. O’Hearn will oversee all athletics at Mason County Middle School and Mason County High School.  Chris is a retired teacher, coach, co-athletic director, assistant principal, and principal of the Mason County School District.

A Maysville native, Mr. O’Hearn spent twenty-seven years in public education, concluding his time as the principal of Mason County High School in 2018.  He currently serves as the County Commissioner of District 2.  As a former Royal, Chris is a member of the prestigious 10th Region Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and as a coach. As a head coach, Mr. O’Hearn began his career at Nicholas County High School, where the Blue Jackets won the Class “A” Regional Championship in 1994.  His basketball tenure on the Royals sideline spanned sixteen years, eleven as the head coach.  His Royals basketball teams were crowned 10th Region Champions in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010, to go along with nine 39th District Championships, a final four appearance in 2010, and a KHSAA state championship in 2008.  Mr. O'Hearn was named 10th Region Coach of the Year four times and the KABC 10th Region Coach of the Year in 2005, 2009, and 2014.  He was the Head Coach for the Kentucky/Indiana All-Star game in 2014.

It is with great excitement that I accept the position of District Athletic Director for Mason County Schools,” said O’Hearn.  “It is refreshing to see a school board and a superintendent recognize the impact that athletics has on our student-athletes. I look forward to working with the administration at Mason County High School and Mason County Middle School, along with the many coaches and student-athletes. We will work closely to provide opportunities that will enrich and positively affect students' lives.”

As a student-athlete himself, Mr. O’Hearn participated in football, basketball, baseball, and tennis during his time as a student at MCHS.  During his career, he continued to work for the betterment of athletics and student-athletes in the state of Kentucky by serving as a 10th/11th Region Policy Board Representative for three years, a KHSAA Board of Control member for three years, and continues to serve on the Kentucky High School Coaches Association Executive Committee, a seat he has held since 2010.
