Braeden Myrick makes a school record 11 3's in Royals win over Fleming County

Braeden Myrick made a school-record 11 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points and Landon Scilley had a career-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Mason County Royals to a 93-72 win over the Fleming County Panthers on Friday night in Flemingsburg.

Myrick was 11-of-13 beyond the arc and broke the school record of 10 3-pointers set by Braylon Hamilton last season.

Scilley made 10-of-16 from the field and was 5-of-6 from the free throw in recording his second straight double-double.

Lucas Jolly scored 27 points for the Panthers who were without leading scorer Seth Hickerson. Adam Hargett followed with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Isaac Frye added 17 points.

Fleming County (20-8) led 11-7 with 3:46 to play in the first quarter. Mason County (17-10) reeled off eight straight points and led the rest of the game.

The Royals' biggest lead was 90-66 with 1:50 left in the game.

Mason County shot 59.6 percent from the field including 15-of-26 from 3-point range.

The Royals will host the Harrison County Thorobreds on Tuesday.

The Panthers will play at Augusta on Tuesday night.

Royals denied a 2A section 3-peat with a loss to Fleming County

The Mason County Royals' quest for a third straight trip to the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament and a second consecutive 2A state championship was ended by a 61-58 loss to the homestanding Fleming County Panthers on Saturday night in the Section 6 championship game.

In an all too familiar trend, the Royals fell way behind early and couldn't catch up.

Mason County led 7-2 before Fleming County reeled off 15 straight points.

The Panthers took their largest lead — 29-15  with 1:29 left in the second quarter.

Fleming County was up 40-27 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter when the Royals started to rally with a 10-0 run. 

Down 53-51 in the fourth quarter, Mason County had a chance to take the lead, but a 3-point shot rimmed out. That's as close as the Royals would get.

Seth Hickerson scored a game-high 23 points for Fleming County. Lucas Jolly followed with 17 points and Adam Hargett added 14.

Jake Feldhaus had a double-double for Mason County with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Braylon Hamilton tossed in 13 points and Landon Scilley had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Fleming County (11-4) will play LaRue County on Friday in the Kentucky 2 Championships state tournament in Owensboro.

Mason County will be at home Tuesday night vs. the Campbell County Camels.

Royals golf team season ends, Feldhaus qualifies for state championships

The Mason County Royals golf team closed out the season with a tie for fifth place in the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys' State Golf First Round at Winchester Country Club Tuesday.

Mason County sophomore Jake Feldhaus qualified for the state championships next month at Bowling Green Country Club by shooting an even-par 72 Tuesday. He tied for sixth place. 

Noah Gardner shot a 77, Cole Owens an 84 and Quin Grooms an 87 to round out the Royals' team score of 320. Ryan Skaggs, the only senior in Mason County's top five, shot a 93.

Fleming County senior Seth Hickerson carded a 78 and Fleming County senior Adam Hargett shot an 83. 

Madison Central (294), George Rogers Clark (306) and Rockcastle County (308) are the three teams that advanced to the state championships.

Tee times set for State Golf First Round

Tee times are set for the 2023 Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf First Round.

Winchester Country Club is the Section 3 site for Regions 9-12. The girls play Monday, the boys Tuesday.

Here are the tee times for area qualifiers:

The Mason County Royals, the Region 12 champions, are paired with Madison Central, George Rogers Clark and Rockcastle County.

The top three teams, along with the top 15 individuals not from a qualifying team, will advance to the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Championships at Bowling Green Country Club next month. 

Tickets for the State Golf First Round will be sold online via GoFan, the official digital ticket vendor for the KHSAA. No paper tickets will be sold at the golf course. 

Advance tickets are $10 each. Tickets purchased the day of the event will cost $12 each.

Royals golf team completes four-peat at region tournament

The Mason County Royals won the Region 12 Golf Tournament for the fourth straight year Tuesday with a team score of 305 at Irish Hills Golf Course in Mt. Sterling.

It's the first four-peat in the history of the Royals' golf program.

Jake Feldhaus shot a 1-over par 72 to tie for second place in the individual standings. Noah Gardner shot a 76 and tied for eighth place.

Cole Owens and Quin Grooms each shot a 78 to round out the team score. Ryan Skaggs shot an 80.

Fleming County junior Seth Hickerson shot a 3-under par 68 to win the individual championship.

The Mason County team, Hickerson and Fleming County senior Adam Hargett (77) all advance to the First Round State Tournament next week at Winchester Country Club.

Royals defeat Fleming County 73-68 in Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 semifinals

The Mason County Royals led by 18 points early in the fourth quarter and were able to hang on for a 73-68 victory over the Fleming County Panthers in the semifinals of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament at Greenup County on Thursday night.

After leading by two points at halftime, the Royals outscored the Panthers 21-8 in the third quarter and scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to lead 58-40. Fleming County, playing without point guard Lucas Jolly who is injured, chipped away at Mason County's lead, but ran out of time. 

Braylon Hamilton led Mason County in scoring with 17 points. Terrell Henry had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Carter McClanahan scored 13 points. Riley Mastin tossed in 14 points.

Seth Hickerson poured in 32 points for Fleming County (9-7). Isaac Frye scored 15 points and Adam Hargett added 12 points.

Mason County (12-2) will play the Estill County Engineers in the championship game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Greenup County.

Red hot Royals rout Fleming County 92-63

The Mason County Royals shot 63.3 percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers in a 92-63 rout of the Fleming County Panthers in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic tonight at The Fieldhouse.

After leading 44-26 at the half, the Royals outscored the Panthers 35-19 in the third quarter. Mason County (4-0) led 82-45 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.

The Royals shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and 66.7 percent in the second half.

Terrell Henry scored 28 points. Riley Mastin followed with 21, KG Walton 16 and Philip Bierley 11.

Fleming County (5-1) was led in scoring by Seth Hickerson with 21 points. Lucas Jolly tossed in 20 and Adam Hargett and Isaac Frye added 10 each.

The Royals' next game is Tuesday night vs. the Holmes Bulldogs in Covington.  

The Panthers will travel to Owningsville Tuesday to play the Bath County Wildcats.
