The Mason County Royals' quest for a third straight trip to the Kentucky 2A Championships state tournament and a second consecutive 2A state championship was ended by a 61-58 loss to the homestanding Fleming County Panthers on Saturday night in the Section 6 championship game.
In an all too familiar trend, the Royals fell way behind early and couldn't catch up.
Mason County led 7-2 before Fleming County reeled off 15 straight points.
The Panthers took their largest lead — 29-15 — with 1:29 left in the second quarter.
Fleming County was up 40-27 with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter when the Royals started to rally with a 10-0 run.
Down 53-51 in the fourth quarter, Mason County had a chance to take the lead, but a 3-point shot rimmed out. That's as close as the Royals would get.
Seth Hickerson scored a game-high 23 points for Fleming County. Lucas Jolly followed with 17 points and Adam Hargett added 14.
Jake Feldhaus had a double-double for Mason County with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Braylon Hamilton tossed in 13 points and Landon Scilley had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Fleming County (11-4) will play LaRue County on Friday in the Kentucky 2 Championships state tournament in Owensboro.
Mason County will be at home Tuesday night vs. the Campbell County Camels.
Fleming County — Jolly 17, Hickerson 23, Hargett 14, Frye 2, Roberts 5
Mason County — Hamilton 13, Feldhaus 22, C. Reed 9, Horch 2, Routt 2, Scilley 10
(Updated to correct that Fleming County will play LaRue County.)
