Landon Scilley named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team

Former Mason County Royal Landon Scilley has been named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.

Scilley has played in all 55 of Liberty University's games. He has started at second base, third base, center field and designated hitter. He pitched one inning in relief.

Scilley is batting .263 with five home runs and 34 RBI. He has a .390 slugging percentage and a .338 on-base percentage.

Liberty is hosting the Conference USA double-elimination tournament. Liberty, the No. 8 seed will play No. 1 seed Dallas Baptist on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Scilley hits two homers and drives in three runs in Liberty's win over Middle Tennessee

Landon Scilley hit two home runs and had three RBI as the Liberty Flames defeated the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 12-2 in eight innings on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep at home.

Scilley, a freshman from Maysville, hit a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning and a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning.

He is batting .270 with three home runs and 23 RBI. His OPS is .729 and his slugging percentage is .391.

Liberty is 22-11 overall and 5-4 in Conference USA games. 

The Flames will host the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.

Landon Scilley drives in two runs in Liberty's 5-3 win over Virginia

Landon Scilley drove in two runs as the Liberty Flames beat the Virginia Cavaliers 5-3 on Tuesday to run their record to 18-8.

Scilley had an RBI single in the fifth inning and drove in a run with a sacrific fly in the seventh inning.

For the season, Scilley is batting .286 with one home run and 18 RBI.

The Flames' next game is on Friday at Jacksonville State.

Random notes

 Here are a few random notes:

• The Mason County Royals tennis team opened the season on Tuesday with a 8-1 win over the Georgetown G-Men. The Royals and Lady Royals will host Scott County today.

• Landon Scilley made his first collegiate pitching appearance on Tuesday tossing a scoreless inning in Liberty's 6-4 loss to Clemson. Scilley started the game as the designated hitter. He drew two walks, went 1-for-2 and scored a run.

• Former Mason County Royal Jordan Gilbert guided his Green County Dragons to a 64-62 victory over the Taylor County Cardinals on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the 5th Region Tournament at Marion County. Green County will play North Hardin in the semifinals on Monday night. 

• The other semifinal game in the 5th Region Tournament will pit Adair County against Caverna. Adair County, coached by former Mason County resident Deron Breeze, beat Central Hardin 69-52 in the quarterfinals on Monday night.

Scilley goes 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run in Liberty's 12-4 win.

Liberty designated hitter Landon Scilley went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run as the Flames beat the Central Michigan Chippewas 12-4 on Saturday to run their record to 10-4.

For the season, Scilley is batting .346 with one home run and 13 RBI. He has scored six runs.

Scilley homers and doubles as Liberty beats Duke

Liberty University freshman third baseman Landon Scilley hit his first collegiate home run as the Flames beat No. 17 Duke 12-4 on Wednesday in Durham, North Carolina.

Scilley hit the solo home run in the third inning and drove in another run with a double in the sixth inning.

Scilley raised his batting average to .433. Third base is the second position Scilley has played this season. He was the center fielder in the season opener and has been the designated hitter in six games.

Liberty (6-2) will play the UNC Wilmington Seahawks on Friday.

Landon Scilley off to a hot start at Liberty University

Landon Scilley is off to a hot start to his freshman baseball season at Liberty University.

The 2024 Mason County High School graduate is batting .400 (10-for-25) with one double, two runs scored and nine RBI.

Scilley has started all seven games either in center field or as the designated hitter and has an .888 on base percentage and a .440 slugging percentage.

Scilley went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and one run in a 10-7 win over Xavier on Thursday.

Liberty won its first five games before suffering back-to-back losses over the weekend. 

The Flames will be back in action on Wednesday vs. the Duke Devils in Durham, North Carolina.

Landon Scilley named Second Team All-State

Mason County shortstop/pitcher Landon Scilley has been named Second Team All-State by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Scilley, who has committed to Liberty University, batted a team-high .400 for the 10th Region champions with six home runs and 34 RBI. He led the Royals in runs (44), doubles (9) and stolen bases (32 in 35 attempts).

His pitching record was 5-6 with a team-best earned run average of 2.44. He also led the pitching staff in starts (12), innings pitched (63) and strikeouts (103).

Royals fall to Lexington Catholic in state tournament

The Mason County Royals' remarkable postseason run came to end with a 6-0 loss to the Lexington Catholic Knights on Thursday night in the first round of the Clark's Pump-N-Shop Baseball Tournament at Legends Field in Lexington.

Lexington Catholic scored three runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning and one run in the sixth inning on the way to its eighth straight victory.

Mason County threatened to score in the first two innings. Connor Butler led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple, and Cole Messer and Brady Mefford hit back-to-back singles in the second inning. 

After Cray Fite singled to center field in the third inning the next 13 Mason County batters were retired.

The Royals mounted one last threat with two outs in the seventh when Messer, Mefford and Micah Payne hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases, but Lexington Catholic pitcher Burkley Bounds finished off a complete game with his eighth strikeout.

Mason County starter Landon Scilley gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Mefford allowed one run on three hits in two innings. He struck out two.

The Royals had a 10-11 record following a loss to Scott County on April 26.

After a runner-up finish in the district tournament, Mason County pulled off upset wins over Harrison County, George Rogers Clark and Bourbon County for just the second region championship in program history and the first since 1994.  

The Royals finished the season with a 20-16 record.

The Royals win the 10th Region championship

The Mason County Royals are headed to the state baseball tournament for just the second time in school history.

Mason County shutout the Bourbon County Colonels 8-0 in the championship game of the 10th Region on Friday at Bourbon County.

Mason County's other region title was in 1994.

The Royals scored two runs in the first inning. Connor Butler drew a lead off walk. Landon Scilley followed with a double. Butler scored on Cray Fite's sacrifice fly and Scilley scored on Cole Horch's ground out.

Mason County added four runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Cole Messer drew a walk. Brady Mefford and Micah Payne hit back-to-back singles and Butler cleared the bases with a triple. Scilley drove in Butler with a double.

The Royals padded the lead in the sixth inning. Scilley walked, stole second and scored on Fite's single. Pinch runner Luke Butler scored the final run on a wild pitch.

Fite pitched a complete game four-hitter for his second win in the tournament. He recorded a save in the Royals' semifinal win.

Scilley, Mefford, Fite and Connor Butler were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Mason County (20-15) will play 11th Region champion Lexington Catholic on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in the Clark's Pump-N-Shop Baseball State Tournament at Legends Field in Lexington.

Royals top GRC 6-3 to advance to region final

The Mason County Royals scored four runs in the first inning and defeated the George Rogers Clark Cardinals 6-3 on Thursday to advance to the championship game of the 10th Region Tournament for the first time since 1994.

Mason County's first five batters reached base in the bottom of the first inning. 

Connor Butler got on base thanks to a throwing error. He went to second base on a passed ball and scored on Landon Scilley's single.

An errant throw on a pickoff attempt sent Scilley to second base. He stole third base and scored on Cray Fite's triple.

Cole Horch drove in Fite with a single and advanced to third base when Nathan Bisotti followed with a single.

Cole Messer's RBI fielder's choice plated Horch.

GRC scored a run in the third inning.

The Royals added their final two runs in the fourth inning. 

Micah Payne led off the inning with a bunt single. 

With one out, Scilley walked and Fite was hit by a pitch.

With two outs, Bisotti singled driving in Payne and Scilley.

The Cardinals scored a run in the fifth and a run in the sixth and had two runners in scoring position with one out in the seventh inning before Fite, pitching in relief, got a ground out and pop out to end the game.

Mason County starter Brady Mefford pitched six plus innings giving up the three runs. He struck out two and walked one while picking up his fourth win of the season.

Fite recorded his second save.

The Royals will play the Bourbon County Colonels in the championship game on Friday at 6 p.m. at Bourbon County.

The Colonels beat the Campbell County Camels 3-1 in the other semifinal game.

Royals upset Harrison County 4-3 in eight innngs

 The Mason County Royals upset the Harrison County Thorobreds 4-3 in eight innings in the quarterfinal round of the 10th Region Tournament on Tuesday at Bourbon County.

After Harrison County scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, Mason County tied the game on Connor Butler's RBI single in the second inning. 

Cole Messer drove in two runs with a double in the third inning.

The Thorobreds tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning.

Brady Mefford hit a triple in the eighth inning and scored what proved to be the winning run on Micah Payne's single to center field.

Harrison County had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, but a pop out ended the game, giving the Royals their first win over the Thorobreds since 2014.

Landon Scilley and Cray Fite combined on a six-hitter.

Mason County (18-15) will play George Rogers Clark in the semifinals on Thursday at 5:30. GRC beat Scott 8-2 in the opening game of the tournament.

Landon Scilley decommits from Yale, commits to Liberty

Mason County shortstop/pitcher Landon Scilley has decommitted from Yale University and committed to Liberty University.

Scilley, a three-sport standout, made the announcements on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday.

Bisotti hits two-run homer and Mason County edges Powell County 4-3

Nathan Bisotti hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Mason County beat the Powell County Pirates 4-3 on Saturday in the Royals' final home game of the season.

Mason County jumped out in front with two runs in the third inning.

Landon Scilley had an RBI double, and Cray Fite hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season.

Powell County scored three runs in the top of the fifth before Bisotti put the Royals back in front for good with his second homer of the season.

Fite pitched the final two innings and picked up his fourth win of the season.

Mason County (16-12) will travel to Brooksville on Tuesday to play the Bracken County Polar Bears at 5:30 p.m.

Royals' winning streak ended by a 4-1 loss to Bracken County

The Mason County Royals' four-game winning streak was snapped by a 4-1 loss to the Bracken County Polar Bears on Wednesday at Mason County.

The Polar Bears scored three runs in the first inning.

Cole Horch drove in Landon Scilley with a double in the bottom of the first inning. 

Bracken County added an insurance run in the fifth inning.

Mason County (14-12) will host the Pendleton County Wildcats on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Royals beat Fleming County 5-3 for third straight win

The Mason County Royals ran their winning streak to three games with a 5-3 victory over the Fleming County Panthers on Thursday in Fleming County.

Hayden Workman drove in three runs with a bases loaded double in the fourth inning to give the Royals a 3-0 lead.

Fleming County scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and had runners on second and third with two out, Landon Scilley got out the jam with a strikeout.

Scilley finished with 10 strikouts over five innings for his team-high fourth win of the season. Nathan Bisotti pitched the final two innings and recorded his first save.

The win gave the Royals a season sweep of the Panthers.

Mason County (13-11) will play the Montgomery County Indians in Mt. Sterling on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Royals snap three-game losing skid with a come-from-behind win over Estill County

The Mason County Royals rallied from a 5-0 deficit and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-5 victory over the visiting Estill County Enigneers on Monday.

The Royals scored six runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth.

Cray Fite had a single and double and drove in four runs. He also pitched a complete game for his third win.

Landon Scilley and Cole Horch each had two RBI.

Mason County (11-11) will host the Augusta Panthers on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Royals edge Fleming County 2-1

Nathan Bisotti drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Mason County Royals hung on for a 2-1 win over the Fleming County Panthers on Thursday.

Connor Butler led off the inning with his second single of the game. Landon Scilley was hit by a pitch and Cray Fite drew a walk. With one out, Bisotti drove in Butler and Scilley with a single to left field.

Fleming County scored a run with two out in the top of the seventh and had the potential tying run on second base, but the game ended with a ground out.

Mason County (9-8) will play the East Carter Raiders in the Gary Ishmael Classic at Fleming County on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Royals rout Augusta in five innings

The Mason County Royals scored nine runs in the first inning on their way to a 22-6 victory over the Augusta Panthers in five innings on Tuesday at Augusta.

Landon Scilley hit a two-run home run in the first inning. 

Mason County (8-7) will host George Rogers Clark on Wednesday.

Cray Fite had four hits including a home run and drove in four runs and the Mason County Royals snapped a four-game losing streak with a12-0 win over the Lawrence County Bulldogs on Saturday in Louisa.

Connor Butler led off the game with a home run.

Starting pitcher Landon Scilley struck out nine over five innings.

Mason County (7-7) will play at Augusta on Tuesday
