Hinson's buzzer-beater gives Augusta a win over Scott

Kylan Hinson hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Augusta Panthers over the Scott Eagles 65-62 on Friday in the consolation bracket of the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

Hinson finished with 18 points.

Augusta will play Pike County Central in the fifth place game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Jaylen Ridgon scored 28 points to lead Pike County Central to a 73-57 victory over Tates Creek.

MCIT bracket released

 The Mason County Royals have released the bracket for the 2023 Mason County Invitational Tournament scheduled December 28-30 at The Fieldhouse.

The Royals will be joined by 10th Region teams Augusta, Scott and Campbell County along with Walton-Verona and North Oldham from the 8th Region, Tates Creek from the 11th Region and Pike County Central from the 15th Region.

Pike County Central is led by former St. Patrick Saint Jaylan Rigdon who has verbally committed to the University of Pikeville.

Rigdon leaving St. Patrick for an assistant coaching position at Pike County Central

Aaron Rigdon has stepped down as boys' basketball coach at St. Patrick to accept an assistant coaching position at Pike County Central in Pikeville.

"It was a tough decision, but an opportunity I can't pass up," Rigdon said in a text message.

He will teach Special Education at Pike Country Central while earning his master's degree. 

Rigdon is a 1995 graduate of St. Patrick, is fourth on the Saints' all-time leading scoring list with 1,518 career points and is a member of the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. He has been the Saints' head coach the past three seasons.

St. Patrick is not only losing it's head coach, but also it's leading scorer. Rigdon's son, Jaylan, averaged 17.5 points a game as an eighth grader last season.

High scoring 39th District players in opening week of season

While NBA fans are getting used to seeing 50-point performances by star players on an almost nightly basis, local high school basketball fans have been treated by several high scoring games from players on teams in the 39th District during the first week of the season.

Bracken County 8th grader Blake Reed poured in 44 points in the Polar Bears' loss to Augusta.

Augusta sophomore Kason Hinson, Mason County senior Alex Schlach and St. Patrick 8th grader Jaylan Rigdon are already members of the 30-Point Club. 

Hinson poured in 39 points against Bracken County and 36 in the Panthers' win over Sayre.

Schalch scored 32 points in the Royals' season-opening loss to Lewis County.

Rigdon tossed in 30 points in the Saints' road win over Burgin.

Saints lose to Villa Madonna, 72-70

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Villa Madonna Vikings 72-70 Friday night at The Shamrock in the final game of the regular season.

Riley Mastin led four Saints in double figures with 20 points. 
Jack Gallenstein tossed in 17 points, Jaylan Rigdon followed with 14 points and Pat McKay added 10 points.

St. Patrick plays Bracken County in the semifinals of the 10th Region Tournament Tuesday at 8 p.m. at The Fieldhouse.

Saints lose to Bellevue, 64-60

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Bellevue Tigers 64-60 tonight in Bellevue.

St. Patrick led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter, but was outscored 21-15 in the second quarter and 14-10 in the third quarter.

Three Saints scored in double figures. Jack Gallenstein led the way with 14 points, Pat McKay followed with 13 points and Jaylan Rigdon added 12 points.

St. Patrick is back in action Thursday night at home against the Nicholas County Bluejackets.

Saints play much better in 2nd loss to Berea in a week

A week after suffering a 34-point loss to the Berea Pirates in Berea, the St. Patrick Saints led 41-30 at halftime before losing to the Pirates 69-64 tonight at The Shamrock.

The Saints were outscored 18-12 in the third quarter and 21-11 in the fourth quarter.

Pat McKay made five three-pointers and and led St. Patrick in scoring with 21 points. Jaylan Ridgon and Riley Mastin followed with 14 points apiece. Jack Gallenstein added 10.

The Saints play the Bellevue Tigers Saturday night in Bellevue.

Libby Gallenstein scores 1,000th career point in Lady Saints' loss

St. Patrick junior Libby Gallenstein scored 16 points including her 1,000th career point in the Lady Saints' 54-35 loss to the Robertson County Lady Devils tonight at Robertson County.

The Lady Saints were outscored 24-10 in the fourth quarter. 

The Saints trailed 60-38 at the half and lost the Black Devils 101-57 in the second game of the girls and boys doubleheader.

Pat McKay led the Saints in scoring with 15 points. Jaylan Rigdon tossed in 11 points and Jack Gallenstein added 10 points.

Alex Schlach scored 27 points for the Black Devils.

The Lady Saints host St. Joseph Central Thursday night. 

The Saints are back in action Friday night at home against the Berea Pirates.

Saints lose to St. Joseph Central, 87-52

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the St. Joseph Flyers 87-52 Friday night in Ironton, Ohio.

Jack Gallenstein led St. Patrick in scoring with 12 points. Jaylan Rigdon tossed in 11 points and Pat McKay added 10 points.

The Saints play the Lewis County Lions Tuesday night in Vanceburg.

St. Patrick and Robertson County split a doubleheader

St. Patrick and Robertson County split a girls and boys doubleheader at The Shamrock last night.

Justina Klee had a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Allison Hughes scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lady Saints to a 56-44 victory over the Lady Devils. 

The win snapped St. Patrick's four-game losing streak. The Lady Saints play at Sayre today at 6 p.m.

In the boys' game last night, the Saints trailed 27-4 at the end of the first quarter and lost to the Black Devils 89-40.

Jaylan Rigdon made three three-pointers and led St. Patrick in scoring with 15 points.

The Saints host Silver Grove Saturday night in the second game of a girls and boys doubleheader.

McKay and Mastin return, but Saints lose to Williamstown

St. Patrick guards Pat McKay and Riley Mastin returned to action after being sidelined with injuries, but the Saints lost to the Williamstown Demons 79-52 Friday night at The Shamrock.

McKay led the Saints in scoring with 14 points. Mastin tossed in 13 points and Jaylan Rigdon added 11 points.

Saints edged by Walden 74-73

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Walden Wolverines 74-73 in their season opener Monday night at The Shamrock.

Isaiah Cargill scored a game-high 34 points for Walden. Adam Rudy added 20 points.

Riley Mastin led St. Patrick in scoring with 20 points. Jaylan Rigdon made four three-pointers and scored 17 points. Jack Gallenstein followed with 13 points.

The Saints hit nine three-pointers.

St. Patrick is back in action Friday night at Dayton.
