Austin Moreland signs with Georgetown College

2023 Mason County High School graduate Austin Moreland signed Thursday to continue his academic and track careers at Georgetown College.

Moreland was the Area 7 champion and the region champion in both the110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles last month and finished eighth in those two events at the Class AA Outdoor Track and Field State Championships earlier this month. 

Moreland broke the indoor school record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.36 at the KTCCCA Presidents' Day Weekend Invite in February.

He finished finished third in the 60 meter hurdles at the KTCCCA Class AA Indoor State Championships and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles at the USTAF National Youth Indoor Track and Field Championships and in March.

He was a member of the Royals' 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams and was the place kicker for the football team.

Austin Moreland fourth in 55 meter hurdles at national meet

Mason County senior Autin Moreland finished fourth in the 55 meter hurdles at the USTAF National Youth Indoor Track and Field Championships in Louisville on Saturday with a time of 8.68.

Moreland competed in the 16-18 age division.

He finished third in the 60 meter hurdles at the KTCCCA Class AA Indoor State Championships earlier this month.

Lady Royals and Royals runners-up in state meet, Young and Barrett are state champions

The Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams were both runners-up, while Lexi Young and AJ Barrett won events at the KTCCCA Class AA Indoor State Championships on Saturday in Louisville.

The Lady Royals were edged by North Oldham by a single point, 61-60. The Royals finished with 66.5 points, 12.5 points behind the Bourbon County Colonels.

Young is the state champion in the high jump (5-00.00) and the state runner-up in the long jump (16-10). 

Barrett is the state champion in the pole vault clearing 14 feet, four inches. That's a new school record.

Two other Mason County athletes won medals: Austin Moreland, third in the 60 meter hurdles (9.37) and third in the 400 meter dash (53.00) and Keshaun Thomas, third in the triple jump (40-08.25).

Young set a new school record in the 60 meter dash (8:05).

Layla Henderson set new school records in the 1500 meter run (5:04.74) and the 3000 meter run (10:52.18).

Peyton Ullery set a new school record in the 1500 meter run (4:22.05).

CJ Arthur tied the school record in the 60 meter dash (7.29).

Next up is the outdoor track and field season.

Moreland, Ullery, Lavinder and Henderson break Mason County records at Presidents' Day Indoor Meet

Mason County track athletes Austin Moreland, Peyton Ullery, Elizabeth Lavinder and Layla Henderson broke indoor track school records at the KTCCCA Presidents' Day Weekend Invite in Louisville this weekend.

Moreland broke the 60 meter hurdles record with a time of 9.36 on Saturday.

Ullery broke the 800 meter run record with a time of 2:05.48 on Sunday

Lavinder broke the 1000 meter run record with a time of 3:23.47 on Sunday.

Henderson broke the two mile run record with a time of 11:59.43 on Sunday. Lavinder held the previous record.

Mason County girls' and boys' indoor track teams get third sweep, two records broken

For the third time in as many weeks, the Mason County girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams swept a meet on Saturday at the Mason County Indoor Athletic Complex.

The Lady Royals finished with 103 points. Simon Kenton was second with 69 points.

The Royals racked up 106.5 points. Boyd County was a distance second with 38 points.

Both Mason County teams are 3-0 this season.

Two school records were broken on Saturday. Lexi Young broke the girls' long jump record with a jump of 17-08.25. Peyton Ullery now owns the boys' 1600 meter run record with a time of 4:50.21.

Young also won the girls' 55 meter dash with a time of 7.55 and the girls' high jump, clearing five feet.

Other first place finishes by Mason County athletes include:

• Austin Moreland, boys' 400 meter dash (56.93)
• Elizabeth Lavinder, girls' 800 meter run, (2:35.02)

 Mason County Indoor Meet #4 is scheduled on February 25.

Another sweep for the MasonCounty indoor track and field teams

For the second straight week the Mason County girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams swept the team titles at a Mason County meet.

The Lady Royals finished with 156.5 points. Bishop Brossart was second with 100 points.

The Royals won the boys' meet with 114 points. Simon Kenton was the runner-up with 63 points.

Less than 24 hours after sinking the game-winning free throws in the Lady Royals' win over Scott, freshman Lexi Young won three events: the 55 meter dash (7.51), the high jump (5-04.00) and the long jump (16-06.25)

Meet #3 will take place this Saturday at the Mason County Indoor Athletic Complex.

Royals edge Boyd County 13-12

With 55 seconds remaining in the game, the Mason County defense stopped Boyd County on 4th-and-1 from the Mason County 40 yard line to secure a 13-12 road win for the Royals tonight.

Mason County scored both of its touchdowns in the second quarter on a 41-yard run by Caden Clark-Roberts and a 14 yard touchdown pass from Keshaun Thomas to Isaac Marshall. Austin Moreland's PAT after the second touchdown turned out to be the winning point.

Boyd County threatened to tie to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but after the Lions' second touchdown of the second half, they failed to convert the extra point with 7:13 left in the game.

Mason County (4-0) will play its home opener next week against district foe Pendleton County.

Royals beat Tates Creek 24-21 for their first 3-0 start since 2014

Keyshaun Thomas threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Carson Pugh with 47 seconds left in the game and the Mason County Royals defeated the Class 6A Tates Creek Commodores 24-21 in Lexington on Friday night.

Pugh intercepted a pass in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

Mason County is 3-0 for the first time since 2014.

Thomas completed 10-of-21 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.

Henry had three receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Austin Moreland kicked a 26-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Mason County has a bye week next week before playing at Boyd County on September 16.

Mason County boys' 4x400 meter relay wins at KTCCCA President's Day Weekend Invite 2022

The Mason County boys' 4x400 relay team won the event at the KTCCCA President's Day Weekend Invite 2022 on Sunday in Louisville. 

The team of Alix Flinders, Austin Moreland, Anthony Bozeman and Hunter Kinney won with a time of 3:34.34. 

The meet was held at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center, the site of the indoor state championships this weekend.
