Augusta and Bracken County volleyball teams win district semifinals matches

The Augusta Lady Panthers and the Bracken County Lady Bears were semifinals winners in the 39th District volleyball tournament on Monday night at Augusta. 

The Lady Panthers defeated the Mason County Lady Royals 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-19) and the Lady Bears beat the St. Patrick Lady Saints 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-13). 

Augusta and Bracken County will meet in the championship match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Mason County ended the season with a 12-19 record.

St. Patrick finished with a 2-20 record.

The 39th District volleyball tournament starts on Monday night at Augusta

It's postseason time for Kentucky high school volleyball teams. 

The 39th District Tournament will be played on Monday night and Wednesday night at the historic Augusta Gymnasium.

The first semifinal on Monday at 6 p.m. pits Augusta against Mason County. 

The Lady Panthers and the Lady Royals split their two regular season meetings. Augusta won 3-1 at home on September 5 and Mason County won 3-2 at The Fieldhouse on October 15.

The Bracken County Lady Bears and the St. Patrick Lady Saints meet in the second semifinal match on Monday night.

Bracken County, 6-0 in district matches, had two 3-0 wins over St. Patrick in the regular season.

The winners of the semifinals matches will meet in the championship match on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

All matches will be best of five sets. 

The 39th District champion will host the 10th Region Tournament.

St. Patrick Lady Saints Bria Bauer collects her 1,000th career dig

Here are a few local sports notes for your Wednesday reading:

  • Centre College freshman Keshaun Thomas had three solo tackles including one tackle for a loss (five yards) in the Colonels' 17-14 victory over Maryville on Saturday. Centre (2-0) will travel to Virginia this week to play Hampden-Sydney.
  • St. Patrick senior Bria Bauer collected her 1,000th career dig in the Lady Saints' match vs. the Paris Lady Hounds on Tuesday night at The Shamrock. The Lady Saints will host Ludlow on Wednesday night.
  • The Mason County Royals' home game vs. the Rowan County Vikings on Friday night is a Rae of Sunshine Football Game to raise awareness about mental health. The theme is Yellow Out.

Tryouts for Mason County volleyball and and girls' golf this week

Tryouts for the Mason County volleyball and girls' golf teams will take place this week.

Volleyball tryouts are set for Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at The Fieldhouse.

Tryouts for the girls' golf team are scheduled Wednesday at 9 a.m at Laurel Oaks Golf Course.

Each girl must have an updated physical.

Bracken County wins district volleyball tournament

The Bracken County Lady Bears defeated the Augusta Lady Panthers 25-11, 23-25, 28-26, 25-19 in the championship match of the 39th District volleyball Tournament at The Shamrock at St. Patrick on Thursday evening. 

Bracken County has won nine straight matches.

Both teams advance to the 10th Region Tournament at Harrison County.

Bracken County and Augusta advance in district volleyball tournament

The Bracken County Lady Bears and the Augusta Lady Panthers will meet in the championship game of the 39th District volleyball tournament after posting wins in the semifinals Tuesday night at The Shamrock at St. Patrick.

The Lady Bears defeated the Mason County Lady Royals 25-19, 20-25, 25-13, 25-18.

The Lady Bears topped the St. Patrick Lady Saints 25-13, 25-11, 25-17.

Mason County finished the season with a 19-9 record. It's the first winning season in the 14-year history of the program. The 19 wins are a school record.

St. Patrick ended the season at 2-15.

The championship game will start at 6 p.m. Thursday at The Shamrock.

St. Patrick will host district volleyball tournament

It's postseason time for Kentucky high school volleyball.

The 39th District Tournament will be played at The Shamrock at St. Patrick.

The semifinals will take place Tuesday evening. Mason County and Bracken County meet in the first match at 6, followed by St. Patrick vs. Augusta at 7:45.

The championship match is scheduled Thursday at 6 p.m.

KHSAA releases the first RPI rankings of the season

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association released the first Rating Percentage Index rankings of the season Tuesday and the Mason County Royals football team is No. 26 in Class 4A.

Mason County (2-2) is ranked third in District 5 behind No. 1 Covington Catholic and No. 24 Harrison County. The other two teams in District 5, Grant County and Holmes, are No.31 and No. 42 respectively.

The Royals' opponent this week, Rowan County, is No. 34.

In the volleyball rankings, the Mason County Lady Royals are No. 142 and the St. Patrick Lady Saints are No. 255.  As for the rest of the 39th District, the Bracken County Lady Bears are No. 200 and the Augusta Lady Panthers are No. 248. 

There are 275 varsity volleyball teams in the state this season.

RPI is used for district tiebreaking and football bracketing.

The rankings are also designed to promote high school sports.

Lady Royals runners-up in 2A Section 6 volleyball tournament

The Mason County Lady Royals volleyball team defeated the Powell County Lady Pirates 3-1 in the semifinals of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament but lost to the Greenup County Musketeers 3-0 in the championship match Saturday at Greenup County.

In the semifinal match, Mason County won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-16, Powell County won the third set 25-23 and the Lady Royals took the fourth set 25-20 for their fifth straight.

The scores in the championship match were 25-11, 25-18 and 25-20.

The Lady Royals (5-2) will play their home opener Monday vs. the Bracken County Lady Bears.

Volleyball season begins Monday

The Kentucky high school volleyball season begins Monday.

The St. Patrick Lady Saints open the season at Robertson County Monday night. 

That's the first of three straight road matches for St. Patrick.

The Lady Saints' home opener is August 21 vs. Calvary Christian in the 10th Region All "A" Classic.

The Mason County Lady Royals will begin the season with at least six straight road matches including their season opener Tuesday night at Pendleton County. 

The road trek includes the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament at Greenup County on August 26.

The Lady Royals won't play at home until August 28th when they take on district rival Bracken County.

Nellie Book is the new head volleyball coach at Mason County

Nellie Book, a third grade teacher at the Mason County Intermediate School, is the new head volleyball coach at Mason County High School.

Book succeeds Stephanie Binion who stepped down after one season as the Lady Royals' head coach.

Book played volleyball at Kentucky Christian University and has six years coaching experience with the Lewis County Schools.

Lady Saints draw Montgomery County in 10th Region volleyball tournament

The St. Patrick Lady Saints, champions of the 39th District, will play the Montgomery County Lady Indians, runners-up of the 40th District in the quarterfinal round of the 10th Region volleyball tournament Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Bishop Brossart.

Mason County volleyball open gym and tryout #1 this week

The Mason County Lady Royals volleyball team will have open gym this Monday through Friday from 3-5 p.m. at The Fieldhouse. 

Tryouts will be this Friday and on Monday, July 18 from 3-5 p.m. at The Fieldhouse.

The Lady Royals will host Dayton for preseason scrimmage on August 11 at 6 p.m. 

The season opener is Monday, August 15 at Newport. 

The Lady Royals' home opener is Tuesday, August 16 vs. Pendleton County.

MCHS volleyball open gym scheduled June 13 and 17

Mason County High School volleyball program will have open gym on Monday June 13 from 2:30-4 p.m. and on Friday, June 17 from 5:30- 7 p.m. at the Mason County Intermediate School gymnasium.

Participants need to wear athletic clothing and footwear and bring their own water.

Stephanie Binion is the new volleyball coach at Mason County

Stephanie Binion is the new head coach of the Mason County Lady Royals volleyball team.

Binion is a teacher at Mason County Middle School and was the middle school volleyball coach. She succeeds Kortney Mills who stepped down after three seasons as the Lady Royals' coach.
