Here are some news and notes to catch up on some local sports:

• Former Mason County football players Jackson Tolle and Colt Fearis will receive Mid-South Conference Championship rings. Georgetown College won its 17th conference title. The Tigers play MidAmerica Nazarene Saturday in the first round of the NAIA playoffs;
• Mason County offensive tackle Alex Newton has been invited to playin the Kentucky All-Star football game. A team of Louisville all-stars will play a team of all-stars from the rest of the state;
• The Mason County Royals will host the Highland Bluebirds in the 2011 football season. Highlands has won 19 state championships. The Bluebirds have won three consecutive Class 5A state titles. Highlands will drop down to Class 4A next season;
• Trevor Setty scored a season-high 19 points for Pikeville College in the Tigers' 108-71 victory over Glenville State on Nov. 10

Four Mason Co. athletes named to KTCCCA All-State Track Teams

Four Mason County athletes have been named to the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Class AA Boys All-State Track Teams. Seth Adkins was named First Team All-State in the 200 meter dash and Second Team All-State in the 100 meter dash. Mason County's 4x400 meter relay team of Adkins, Bradley Lang, Colt Fearis and Josh Harris was named First Team All-State.

Royals 2nd, Lady Royals 3rd at Harrison Co. meet

The Mason County boys took second place and the Mason County girls finished third in the 41st Annual Harrison County Invitational Saturday. Seth Adkins won the boys' 100 meter dash and boys' 200 meter dash. Colt Fearis won the boys' 400 meter dash, edging Josh Harris by 1/100th of a second. Adkins, Fearis and Harris teamed up with Bradley Lang to win the boys' 4x200 meter relay. Here is a link to the complete results.

Georgetown College Orange-Black Game is tonight

The Georgetown College football team will play its annual Orange-Black Game tonight at 7 o'clock. Jackson Tolle, who will be a junior next season, starts at defensive end for the Tigers.
Mason County senior Colt Fearis, a Georgetown signee, is scheduled to attend the game as part of Rookie Weekend. Admisson is $5.

Colt Fearis signs with Georgetown College

Mason County senior Colt Fearis signed this morning to play football at Georgetown College. Fearis says he was recruited to play wide receiver for the Tigers. He was primarily a wide receiver and defensive back for Mason County. He was the quarterback for the final three games last season after Neal Pawsat suffered a season-ending injury. As a receiver, Fearis had 12 receptions for 164 yards and three touchdowns his senior season. On defense, he had 51 tackles and one interception. He had a fumble recovery on special teams. In three games at quarterback, Fearis completed 14-of-20 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 144 yards and four touchdowns.

Four Mason County football players have scholarship offers

Four Mason County football players have received scholarship offers. All four are seniors. Wide receiver/defensive back Malcolm Jones has been offered full tuition, room and board by New Mexico Institute Junior College. Wide receiver/defensive back Bradley Lang has an offer from Kentucky State University. Pikeville College has offered scholarships to wide receiver/defensive back Colt Fearis and running back/linebacker Akeem Jackson. Center Lee Sutton is being recruited by several colleges including Union and Hanover.

Royals host East Ridge in playoff opener tonight

The Mason County Royals host the East Ridge Warriors tonight in the opening round of the Class 3A football playoffs. Mason County is 10-0. East Ridge, a Pike County school, is 3-7 overall and went o-4 in district games, but qualified for the playoffs for the first time in its eight-year history because there are only four teams in District 8. The Warriors have been outscored by their opponents 439-178 and have been shutout three times. Senior Colt Fearis will make his first start at quarterback for Mason County. Fearis rushed for 118 yards and four touchdowns after Neal Pawsat suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of last week's win over Greenup County. Fearis has completed 3-0f-3 passes this season. The winner of tonight's game will play the winner of the Fleming County at Pike County Central game.

Buchanan does not expect Pawsat to return this season

Mason County football coach David Buchanan says he doesn't expect junior quarterback Neal Pawsat to return to action this season. Pawsat suffered a knee injury in the opening minutes of the Royals' 47-13 win over Greenup County Friday. Buchanan says Pawsat had an M.R.I. today, but the results were not available early this evening. Buchanan made the comments on the McDonald's High School Football Show on WFTM.
"I don't expect him to be back this year," Buchanan said. "I know that Neal and his family appreciate the prayers, and I know a lot of folks are interested, and I appreciate that concern, I know the Pawsats do too."
Buchanan made it clear, Pawsat will not be rushed back into action.
"I don't want Neal to feel like there is pressure on him to play until he would feel like he was ready to play," Buchanan said.
He added, "When we know for sure the timeline, I'd said we'll talk about that."
Buchanan said he is glad that he thinks at some point, Pawsat will be back at 100 percent,
"based on what I know now, I don't think that's going to be this year."
Back-up quarterback Colt Fearis scored four touchdowns for the Royals Friday night. Mason County hosts East Ridge this Friday night in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Colt Fearis is Mason County' Red Zone Player of the Week

Colt Fearis is the Mason County Royals' Red Zone Player of the Week. Fearis stepped in at quarterback after Neal Pawsat left the game with an injury. Fearis rushed 17 times for 118 yards and four touchdowns in Mason County's 47-13 win over Greenup County.
Every week, one player is selected as the Red Zone Player of the Week at each participating high school. At the end of the season, one player from each school will be nominated to represent their team for possible selection as a national finalist. From these local nominations, the Red Zone Playerof the Year Awards Committee will select 50 finalists to be announced in February 2010 to coincide with national letter of intent signing day.

Royals win 47-13, Pawsat injured

The Mason County Royals defeated the Greenup County Musketeers 47-13 tonight to finish up the school's first 10-0 regular season, but junior quarterback Neal Pawsat might have suffered a season-ending injury. Pawsat left the game with 10:15 to play in the first quarter, one play after taking a hit on a run. "Based on what I know at this point, I really don't think he's going to be back," Coach David Buchanan said on the post-game show. Colt Fearis took over at quarterback and rushed for 118 yards and four touchdowns. After Greenup County tied the game 7-7 in the second quarter, Mason County scored 40 unanswered points to lead 47-7. Jordan Gilbert's 87-yard run on a reverse started the scoring streak. Greenup County committed four turnovers in the first half. Mason County tailback Josh Harris rushed for 112 yards. Mason County had 384 rushing yards.The Royals host East Ridge in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday night.

Royals top Comets 26-12 in Olive Hill

The Mason County Royals continued their big play attack to defeat the ball-hogging West Carter Comets 26-12 in a district game tonight in Olive Hill. West Carter used a 14-play, 64-yard drive to take a 6-0 lead. Mason County went up 13-6 only to see the Comets cut the lead to one with a 15-play, 80-yard scoring drive that consumed the first 8:41 of the third quarter. The Royals answered with a 73-yard touchdown run by Josh Harris and added another TD in the fourth quarter. Neal Pawsat completed 11-of-15 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Harris had 15 carries for 170 yards and the long touchdown run. Jordan Gilbert had four receptions for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Mason County is 8-0 for just the second time in the history of the program. The Royals are 3-0 in the district. They close out district play this coming week at home against Fleming County.
