Jay Stanley with a personal best hammer throw and a 3rd place finish at SoCon Outdoor Track Championships

With a new personal best throw of 51.77 meters, Western Carolina University senior Jay Stanley, a 2016 graduate of Mason County High School, finished third in the hammer throw today at the SoCon Outdoor Track Championships.

Stanley's previous personal best throw was 51.65 meters at the Vertklasse Meeting in High Point, North Carolina last month.

Stanley will compete in the discus throw and the shot put on Sunday during the final day of the SoCon Outdoor Track Championships.

Two personal bests and two top three finishes for Jay Stanley at the SoCon Indoor Championships

Former Mason County Royal Jay Stanley, a senior Western Carolina, had two top three finishes at the 2021 SoCon Indoor Championships in Lexington, Virginia over the weekend.

Stanley took third place in the shot put on Saturday with a personal best throw of 14.91 meters.

Stanley was the runner-up in the weight throw on Sunday with a a personal best distance of 17.06 meters.

Stanley was named All-Southern Conference in the shot put.

The Catamounts finished in second place for the second straight season.

A big week for Mason County alums

It was a big week in sports for several Mason County alums. Here are the highlights:

Northern Kentucky University senior Jackson Frame tied for 18th place in the Horizon League Championship Tuesday in Florida. Last week, Frame was named Second Team All Horizon League and was named to the Horizon League All Academic Team for the third straight year.

Georgetown College freshman Jordan Frodge finished 21st and University of Pikeville senior Lauren Vice tied for 25th place in the Mid-South Conference Women's Golf Tournament. Vice was named to the Academic All Mid-South Conference Team.

Chris Lofton scored 20 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead Le Mans to a 94-69 victory over Boulazac in France Saturday.

Darius Miller had nine points, six assists, three rebounds and one steal in the Pelicans' loss to the Warriors Saturday night. Miller hit a three-quarter length of the court buzzer beater at the end of the second quarter.

Western Carolina University Jay Stanley won first place in the shot put with a throw of 14.8 meters at the Tri-State Classic hosted by East Tennessee State University.

Stanley helps Western Carolina win fifth straight Southern Conference Championship

Mason County alum Jay Stanley, a sophomore at Western Carolina University, took fifth place in the shot put and eighth place in the weight throw to help the Catamounts win their fifth straight Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship today in Lexington, Virginia.

Stanley's best toss in the shot put was 14.77 meters and his mark in the weight throw was 15.11 meters.

Stanley state champion in shot put, runner-up in discus

Mason County senior Jay Stanley is the Class 2A state champion in the shot put for the second straight year. Stanley had a toss of 52-01.25 today at the Republic Bank/KHSAA state track and field meet at the University of Kentucky.

Stanley was the runner-up in the discus throw (148-09).

Mason County senior Brendan Garrison was the runner-up in the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 40.98. He finished sixth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.20) and eighth in the triple jump (41-6.25).

Mason County junior Jordan Frodge finished eighth in the high jump (4-10.00).

Jay Stanley signs with Western Carolina University

Mason County senior shot put and discus thrower Jay Stanley signed today with Western Carolina University, a Division I school in Cullowee, North Carolina.

"I loved the campus when I first went on it the very first time, it just seemed really amazing," Stanley said. "I loved the atmosphere, just surrounding the Appalachian Mountains; the people around the campus that are so nice. And when I went on my visit and was with the track team, just staying with some of the athletes, talking and hanging out with them as well as other athletes on other teams, it was such a nice campus and everybody worked together. And the coaches on the track team just reminded me so much of my coaches here- that they want you to do good athletically and their going to push you too, but their main focus is to get your academics up."

Stanley said he plans to throw the shot put, discus and hammer at West Carolina while majoring in electrical engineering.

In 2015, Stanley was the outdoor shot put state champion, the outdoor discus state runner-up and the indoor shot put state runner-up. 

He won the indoor shot put state championship this year. The outdoor meet is next month. 

Mason County coach Mark Kachler says Stanley "has been exceptionally successful and this is just payday from that."

Mason Co. girls win Fleming Co. Twilight Invitational

Track and field athletes braved the cold Thursday evening to compete in the Fleming County Twilight Invitational.

Mason County won the girls meet and took third place in the boys meet.

First place finishes by local athletes include:

• Fleming County senior Mackenzie Purvis in the girls 100 meter hurdles (20.01) 
• Mason County senior Brendon Garrison in the boys 110 meter hurdles (17.51) and the boys 300 meter hurdles (46.96)

Despite some rain and strong winds, the Mason County All-Comers track and field, took place Thursday. Darkness prevented completion of the boys high jump.

Mason County won the girls meet; Bath County captured the boys meet.

Mason Co. girls and boys team finish 2nd in state indoor track and field meets; Garrison and Stanley are state champions

The Mason County girls and boys teams both finished second in the KTCCCA state indoor track and field meets Saturday at the Carmeuse Complex.

Rockcastle County won the girls Class AA meet with 116 points. The Mason County Lady Royals had 93 points.

Waggener is the boys Class AA champion with 107 points. The Mason County Royals, the state champions the past two years, had 82 points.

Fleming County took seventh place in both the girls and boys Class AA meets.

It's the second straight year the Mason County girls have been the state runner-up. In the past four years the Mason County boys have finished 2nd, 1st, 1st and 2nd.

In an email message, Mason County coach Mark Kachler said "Very solid 4 year run for the guys. I am very proud of all their efforts."

Mason County senior Brendon Garrison is the state champion in the 55 meter hurdles (8.66) and the triple jump (40-10.50) and is the runner-up in the long jump (19-03.00).

Mason County senior Jay Stanley is the state champion in the shot put (46-11). He was the state champion in the shot put in the outdoor meet last year.

Several other Mason County athletes had runner-up finishes:

• Rheagan Sizmore in the girls 1600 meter run (5.58.33) and the girls pole vault (8-00.00)
• Hayden Faris in the girls 3000 meter run 12:39.98)
• Isaiah Riggs in the boys 3000 meter run (10:58.20)
• Marissa Scilley in the girls long jump (15-02.25) and the girls triple jump (32.02.50)
• Jordan Frodge in the girls high jump (4-10.00)
• Jesse Morgan, Bryce Johnson, Zach Walters and Seth Bickley in the boys 4x400 meter relay (4:00.00)

Fleming County's Kaleb Flannery was the runner-up in the boys high jump (5-08-00.)

Mason Co. girls 2nd, boys 7th in indoor track and field meet

The Mason County girls took second place and the Mason County boys finished in seventh place in the final regular season indoor track and field meet Saturday.

St. Henry won the girls meet with 76 points. Mason County had 73 points. Tates Creek won the boys meet with 80 points. Mason County finished with 26 points.

Three Mason County athletes had first place finishes- Marissa Scilley in the long jump, Rheagan Sizemore in the pole vault and Jay Stanley in the shot put.

Mason County will host the state meet this Saturday at the Carmeuse Complex.

Mason County Girls 3rd, Boys 5th in Saturday Track and Field Meet

The Mason County girls finished third and the the Mason County boys were fifth in the indoor track and field meet Saturday at the Carmuse Complex.

Rockcastle County won girls' meet. Central won the boys' meet.

Mason County senior Jay Stanley won the shot put (49-09.50). Mason County junior Rheagan Sizemore won the pole vault (7-00.00).

Royals Edge Ballard by One Point in First Meet at Mason County

The Mason County boys edged Ballard by one point to win the indoor track and field meet Saturday at Mason County.

Rockcastle County won the girls' team title. Mason County and Model tied for fourth place.

Jay Stanley is the Class AA State Champion in Shot Put

Mason County junior Jay Stanley is the Class AA state champion in the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, two inches. Stanley is the state runner-up in the discus throw at 150 feet, nine inches.
Mason County junior Brendon Garrison took third place in the boys 300 meter hurdles in a time of 42.12. The Mason County girls 4x800 meter relay team of Rheagan Sizemore, Hannah Jackson, Abigail Dawson and Cara Woods took sixth place and set a school record by almost 12 seconds with a time of 10:06.04. The state track and field meet was held today at the University of Kentucky.
Paducah Tilghman won the boys title by one point over Highlands while the North Oldham girls won their second straight championship. The Mason County boys finished in 10th place. The Mason County girls were 29th.

Mason Co. girls 2nd, boys 4th in Track & Field Region Meet

The Mason County girls track and field team's streak of six straight region championships was snapped with a runner-up finish Saturday at Ashland. Ashland Blazer won the region with 157 points. Mason County had 142 points. Russell won the boys' meet with 123 points. Mason County was fourth with 64 points. Mason County athletes who won region titles include:
