Local sports notes:

Here are a few local sports notes:


  • St. Patrick senior Olivia Poczatek signed Thursday to continue her academic and soccer career at Georgetown College.
  • Mason County senior Spencer Magee signed last week to continue his academic and golf career at Thomas More University.
  • Former Mason County Lady Royal Briana McNutt was one of four Thomas More University women's basketball players who were named Academic All Mid-South Conference.
  • The KTCCA Indoor Track and Field State Championships take place Saturday at the Carmeuse/Mason County Indoor Athletic Complex. The Class A meet begins at 9 a.m. The Class AA and Class AAA meets are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Admission is $8.

Royals fail to qualify for state, but Butler does as an indvidual

The Mason County Royals finished third in the Region 8 golf tournament today at A.J. Jolly Golf Course and failed to qualify for state, but Mason County freshman Mason Butler will go to state as an individual qualifier.

Butler shot a five-over 76 and secured a spot in the state tournament on the third hole of a playoff. 

Highlands won the region title with a team score of  293. Grant County finished second at 307. Mason County was third at 316.

Evan Schumacher carded a 77 for the Royals. Kaden Grooms shot a 78, Spencer Magee an 85 and Logan Shepherd an 86. The top four scores are used for the team total.

The Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys State Golf Tournament will be played October 5th and 6th at Bowling Green Country Club.

Royals win Powell County Invitational; Butler with an ace

The Mason County Royals won the Powell County Invitational today with a team score of 302. It's the Royals' second win of the season.

Mason Butler had a hole-in-one on No. 16.

Kaden Grooms and Spencer Magee tied for second place with 73s.

Royals 5th in Mason County/St. Patrick Invitational

The Mason County Royals took fifth place in the Mason County/St. Patrick Invitational today at Maysville Country Club with a total of 328.

Scott County won the tournament with a 300. Grant County was second at 307, St. Henry was third at 319 and Greenup County was fourth at 326.

Mason County was led by Mason Butler with a 76. Evan Schumacher shot an 82, Kaden Grooms an 84 and Spencer Magee an 86.

Royals 3rd in Highland Invitational

The Mason County Royals golf team finished in third place in the Highland Invitational Wednesday at A.J. Jolly Golf Course with a total score of 309.

Mason Butler led the Royals with a 74. Kaden Grooms shot a 75, Spencer Magee a 77 and Evan Schumacher an 83.

Royals finish 2nd in Greenup County Invitational

The Mason County Royals finished second in the Greenup County Invitational Tournament at Hidden Cove Golf Course Saturday with a total of 323.

St. Henry won the tournament with a 318 total.

Freshman Mason Butler led the Royals with a 76. Freshman Logan Shepherd followed with a 79, freshman Kaden Grooms shot an 80 and junior Spencer Magee added an 88.

Mason County 7th in Grant JV Tournament

Mason County took seventh place in the Grant County junior varsity golf tournament. Spencer Magee tied for second with a 43. Josh Coleman carded a 48. Tanner Pitakis and Evan Schumacher shot 54s and Daniel Taylor shot a 56.

B.J. Knox Wins Bryan Conway Memorial Junior Golf Tournament Again

B.J. Knox won the boys' 15-16 division of the Bryan Conway Memorial Junior Golf Tournament for the second straight year at Kenton Station Golf Course today. Knox, a rising junior at Mason County High School, shot a three-over 73 to edge Dylan Phillips and Jordan Hughes by one shot. Phillips won a playoff to take second place. Grace Kiskaden won the girls' 15-16 division. Other age division winners include:
