Five Mason County players advance in regional tournaments, three suffer losses

Five Mason County tennis players punched their tickets to the state tournament by advancing to the semifinals of the regional tournaments with wins while three players were eliminated on Wednesday. 

No. 2 seed Evan Smith won his quarterfinal singles match 6-0, 6-1.

The girls' doubles teams of Bailey Boone and Eden Abshire and the boys' doubles team of Sam Clarke and Alex Wood also advanced to the semifinals.

Boone and Abshire won 6-1, 7-5 while Clark and Wood pulled out a 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 victory.

Three singles players suffered losses. Tori Lavinder lost 6-4, 4-6, 7-10, Juan Carlos fell 3-6, 1-6 and Ellen Clarke lost 6-7, 2-6.

Smith and Carlos advance in 10th Region boys' tennis tournament

Mason County seniors Evan Smith and Juan Carlos advanced to the quarterfinals of the 10th Region boys' singles tennis tournament at Boubon County with victories in the Round of 16 matches on Tuesday.

Smith, the No. 2 seed, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory and Carlos won his match 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 (1-0).

Juan Carlos signs with Campbellsville University

Mason County senior Juan Carlos signed on Wednesday to continue his academic and soccer careers at Campbellsville University.

Carlos helped the Royals win the district soccer championship last season and was named second team All-Region. He is also a member of the Mason County track and field teams. He was part of the 4x200 meter relay team that set a new school record at the state indoor championships last month.

Monday news and notes

 Here are a few Monday news and notes:

• Two Mason County soccer players received All-Region honors. Noah Gardner was named to the First Team and Juan Carlos was named to the Second Team;

• St. Patrick junior cross country runner Gabe Sammons finished 10th in the Greenup County Invitational on Saturday with a time of 19:21.58;

• With the Maysville Miners winning their opening game on Sunday, I did some more research on the unique rules in the American Basketball Association. A half-court shot is worth four points; teams have only seven seconds to get the ball across the timeline; if a team committs a turnover in the backcourt, the 3D light comes on and an extra point is added to any basket scored off that turnover; players foul out when they committ their seventh foul; and players who foul out in regulation are allowed to play in overtime.

Royals soccer team wins district championship

Landon Lake and Noah Gardner each scored a goal as the Mson County Royals edged the Harrison County Thorobreds 2-1 in the championship match of the 38th District soccer tournament on Thursday night at Mason County.

Juan Carlos had an assist and goalkeeper Cade Pugh had nine saves.

Both teams will advance to the 10th Region Tournament.
