Local sports notes

Here are a few local sports notes:


  • Mason County senior Jake Swolsky has committed to play basketball at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati. Swolsky averaged 5.3 points and 2.6 rebounds a game last season. His older brother, Ben, a graduate of St. Patrick High School, will be a junior at Mount St. Joseph next season.
  • Mason County senior Max Moran was one of six students in the state to be named a 2020 Ag Athlete of the Year by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Moran was an offensive and defensive lineman for the Royals football team.
  • Registration is still underway for the Kentucky Shines #Team Kentucky Virtual Half Marathon. This is a virtual race where you run, walk, hike or treadmill 13.1 miles by May 2nd. Finishers will receive a commemorative shirt and Ky Shines finishers medal. The race benefits God's Pantry Food Bank and the Team Kentucky Fund established by Governor Steve Beshear. The cost is $30 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and under. Registration continues through May 2nd. Registration site.

Mason County football weekly player awards

Here are the Mason County football player awards based on the Royals' 35-14 loss to the Fleming County Panthers:

Brian Payne State Farm Player of the Game- Seth Chambers

Offensive Lineman of the Game- Max Moran

Defensive Player of the Game- Jacob Ledford

Scout Team Player of the Week- Josh Irwin
