Jackson Frame and BJ Knox win Two-Man Scramble at KSGC

Jackson Frame and BJ Knox won the Two-Man Scramble at Kenton Station Golf Course Sunday with a 36-hole total of 28-under par 112.

Frame and Knox had rounds of 53 and 59.

The teams of Mark Moore and Logan Liles, and Troy Grooms and Deron Feldhaus tied for second place at 25-under 115.

55th Firecracker tournament is this weekend at Kenton Station Golf Course

More than 100 golfers, including three-time defending champion BJ Knox, will tee it up in the 55th Firecracker medal play tournament Saturday and Sunday at Kenton Station Golf Course.

The Shootout is Friday at 6 p.m.

The tournament field will be placed into flights following the first round Saturday.

Corey Richmond wins Laurel Oaks Classic for the second time in three years

Corey Richmond shot a 7-under 65 today and the won the Laurel Oaks Classic for the second time in three years.

Richmond had a 36-hole total of 16-under 128. BJ Knox finished second at 9-under, and Tad Barton took third place at 8-under.

Richmond, who won the Chippeways tournament at Maysville Country Club last month, shot a 33 on the front nine and 32 on the back nine today. He bogeyed No. 1 but finished the front nine with an eagle. He also had an eagle on No. 15.

Fleming County Golf Association/Kenton Station 2-Man Scramble takes place July 24-25

The Fleming County Golf Association/Kenton Station 2-Man Scramble is set for July 24-25.

BJ Knox and Deron Feldhaus are the two-time defending champions.

The first round will be played on Saturday, July 24 at Fleming County Golf Association. The field will be placed into flights based on the first round scores. The final round takes place on Sunday, July 25 at Kenton Station Golf Course.

The shotgun tee times are 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The entry fee is $80 for members and $100 for non-members. At least one golfer of the team must be a member of either Fleming County Golf Association or Kenton Station Golf Course.

A Firecracker three-peat for BJ Knox

BJ Knox fired an 11-under 59 today and won the Firecracker tournament at Kenton Station Golf Course for the third straight year.

Knox, who began the day 1-shot off the lead, had a 30 on the front nine and a 29 on the back nine, and had a 36-hole total of 18-under 122. He had five birdies on the front nine and six on the back nine.

Brett Metzger and Tyler Lippert tied for second place at 16-under.

Matthew Grayson took fourth place at 10-under.

First round leader Rick Harmon shot a 73 today and finished at 5-under 135.

54th Firecracker golf tournament this weekend at KSCG

The 54th Firecracker golf tournament will be played this weekend at Kenton Station Golf Course.

BJ Knox is the two-time defending champion of the 36-hole medal play tournament.

The golfers will be placed into flights based on their scores in the first round on Saturday.

The Shootout is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

BJ Knox First Team All Mid-South Conference

Shawnee State junior golfer BJ Knox of Maysville has been named First Team All Mid-South Conference for the second time in his career.

Knox has won medalist honors five times during the current academic year and finished ninth or better in 10 of the 11 regular season tournaments this year.

Knox shot a 76 today in the final round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Bowling Green. Country Club. He finished 22nd and led the Bears to an eighth place finish in the team standings.

Shawnee State up to 8th place, Knox up to T22 at Mid-South Conference Golf Tournament

The Shawnee State University Bears moved up two spots to 8th place at the Mid-South Conference Golf Tournament. 

The Bears shot a 24-over-par 312 in the second round today at Bowling Green Country Club and are 55-over heading into the final round on Wednesday. 

Shawnee State junior BJ Knox followed up his opening round 78 with a 77 today. He moved up seven spots to T22. He is 11 shots off the lead.

Patrick England shot a 77 today and T34 at 14-over. Jordan Hughes and Elijah McCarty both shot 79s today and are T37 at 16-over.

Shawnee State 10th after first round of Mid-South Conference Tournament; Knox Led Bears with a 78

The Shawnee State men's golf team is in 10th place after the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Bowling Green Country Club

The Bears had a team total of  319. Cumberland (Tenn.) is in the lead at 288.

BJ Knox, a junior from Maysville, led Shawnee State with a six-over 78. He is in 29th place, 11 shots off the lead.

Elijah McCarty, a junior from West Union, Jordan Hughes, a junior from Flemingsburg and Patrick England, a senior from Seaman, Ohio all shot 81s.

The second round is Tuesday and the final round is Wednesday.

News and notes for a rainy day

Here are a few news and notes for a rainy October Thursday:

• After the spring sports season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic, several area teams excelled during the fall season: the Mason County boys' soccer team won what is believed to be the program's first district championship, the St. Patrick volleyball team won it's first 10 matches of the season, it's first district championship and won a match in the 10th Region Tournament for the first time, the Mason County girls' cross country team won its third consecutive regional championship and the Augusta boys' cross cross country team won its first regional championship;

• The KHSAA State Cross Country Championships will be held at the new Bourbon County Cross Country Course. The boys' Class AA meet begins at 4 p.m. Friday. The girls' Class AA meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Friday. The boys' Class A meet begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The meets will streamed live on KYtrackXC.com and the NFHS Network.

• Shawnee State University junior BJ Knox of Maysville finished second in the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club on Tuesday. Knox had a 36-hole total of 3-under 141 and finished regulation play tied for first place. He lost a one-hole playoff to finish second. Knox extended his school record streak of rounds in the 70s or lower to 31.

• Mason County archery team tryouts will be held November 2 and 4 with time slots at 6 p.m. and  7 p.m. at the Steam Academy. Athletes need to message Coach White to reserve a time slot. Her number is 606-375-0061. Athletes must bring a current sports physical to the tryouts.

BJ Knox takes third place at Mid-South Conference Tournament

Shawnee State University sophomore BJ Knox of Maysville shot an even par 72 Wednesday in the final round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament at Bowling Green Country Club and finished third.

Knox had a 54-hole total of seven-over 223. He was named to the All-Mid-South Conference First Team.

Knox has three Shawnee State teammates from the area. Jordan Hughes, a freshman from Flemingsburg, tied for 21st place. Craig Horton a sophomore from West Union, took 29th place and Elijah McCarty tied for 32nd place.

Shawnee State finished sixth in the team standings. 

Georgetown College sophomore Jordan Frodge of Maysville finished in 24th place in the women's Mid South Conference Tournament.

The Georgetown College women finished in sixth place.

B.J. Knox signs with Campbellsville University

Mason County senior B.J. Knox, the 8th Region Player of the Year, signed today to play golf at Campbellsville University.

"I'm just blessed for this opportunity; I'm just ready to take advantage of it," Knox said.

"We're excited to get him, we're just hoping he can take us to the next level," Campbellsville coach Jim Ward said.

Knox was a four-year starter for the Royals and played in the state tournament all four years. 

He tied for 19th place in the state tournament his junior year when the Royals finished third in the state.

Knox was named all-region his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

He won two tournaments and had seven top five finishes his senior season.

"I really think that he's just scratched the surface, I really do," Mason County coach Chad Mefford said. "He's a really talented kid."

Mefford took over as the Royals' coach last season and said Knox was great for him.

"He was a hard worker. He was always at practice, worked on his game, set a good example on the course for the other kids," Mefford said.

Knox said he plans to be a business major.

Mason Co. Boys 3rd, Tyler Lippert T8 in State Tourney

The Mason County Royals finished third in the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA Boys Golf Championship. Mason County shot a 14-over 302 in the second round today at Bowling Green Country Club for a two-day total of 22-over 598. St. Xavier won with a state record 19-under 557 total. Franklin County was second at 18-over. Mason County senior Tyler Lippert shot a one-under 71 for the second straight day and tied for eighth place. B.J. Knox shot a 76 and tied for 19th place. Chandler Clark shot a 73 and tied for 29th place. Kaleb Coleman carded an 82 and tied for 54th place. Bryan Walton shot an 84 and tied for 77th place. Franklin County junior C.J. Jones won the individual state championship. Jones defeated Lyon County sophomore Cullan Brown in a playoff after they finished regulation play tied at eight-under. Brown fired a five-under 67 in the final round.

Royals in 3rd Place, 18 Shots Back After 1st Round of State Tournament

The Mason County Royals are in 3rd place, 18 shots off the lead, after the first round of the Leachman Buick-GMC-Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Championship at Bowling Green Country Club.

Mason County had a total of eight-over 296. St. Xavier tops the leaderboard at 10-under 278. Franklin County is in second place at five-over 293.

B.J. Knox and Tyler Lippert led Mason County with one-under 71s and are tied for 12th place. Kaleb Coleman and Chandler Clark shot five-over 77s. Bryan Walton shot an 88.

St. Xavier senior Allen Hamilton is the individual leader at seven-under 65. The final round is Wednesday

Mason Co. Royals Qualify for State with Region Runner-up

The Mason County Royals qualified for the Leachman Buick GMC Cadillac/KHSAA State Golf Tournament with a runner-up finish in the Region 8 tournament today at Eagle Creek in Dry Ridge. Bourbon County won the region with a total of 304. Mason County had a team score of 313, three shots ahead of Grant County. The top two teams in each region go to state. Highlands senior Parker Harris was the individual region champion with a one-under 69. Mason County junior Tyler Lippert was the individual runner-up with a 70.
