Camels lose in state quarterinals

The Campbell County Camels appeared to be well on their way to the semifinals of the 101st Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen when they built an 11-point lead in the third quarter Friday night, but Oldham County senior Travis Henderson swished a corner three-pointer with 1.9 seconds to play to give the Colonels a 56-55 quarterfinal round victory over the Camels.

Campbell County led 28-23 at halftime and 42-31 with 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Oldham County rallied to tie the score at 53-53 with 44 seconds left in the game.

The Camels regained the lead on Joel Day's jumper with 29 seconds remaining.

After the Colonels took a timeout with 8.8 seconds to go, Jackson Gibson fed a pass to Henderson in the left corner and Henderson hit the game-winner. It was just the second lead change of the game.

Afer a Campbell County timeout, Tanner Clos missed a half-court heave as the buzzer sounded.

Campbell County had nine turnovers in the second half and was 7-of-15 from the free throw line in the game.

Campbell County coach Aric Russell said the free throw shooting was the biggest backbreaker for his team.

The loss snapped Campbell's County's nine-game winning streak and is just the sixth loss of the season for the Camels.

Drew Wilson led Campbell County in scoring with 16 points.

Reid Jolly had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Tanner Lawrence added 10 points and six rebounds.

Day had five points and six assists and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Henderson and Zach Larimore scored 19 of Oldham County's 21 fourth quarter points.

Larimore ended up with a game-high 23 points and Henderson finished with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Oldham County will play Covington Catholic in the  lower bracket semifinal tonight.

Scott County and Warren Central meet in the upper bracket semifinal.

Campbell Co. tops UHA for first victory in state tournament

The Campbell County Camels outscored the University Heights Blazers 28-16 in the third quarter and withstood a 31-point performance by UHA junior KyKy Tandy for an 82-65 victory in the opening round of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen today at Rupp Arena.

It's Campbell County's first-ever win in the state tournament.

UHA led 29-22 with 5:10 to play in the second quarter, but the Camels ended the half with a 11-2 run to lead 33-31 at intermission. 

Campbell County opened the third quarter with a 6-0 and led 61-47 at the end of the quarter.

UHA closed to within 71-63 with 2:28 left in the game, but the Camels answered with seven straight points.

Joel Day led Campbell County in scoring with 23 points. He also had seven assists and six rebounds.

Tanner Clos had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. He dished out five assists.

Reid Jolly scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. 

Drew Wilson added 11 points.

Campbell County advances to the quarterfinals and will play Friday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of tonight's game between Oldham County and McCracken County.

Campbell Co. tops Scott 68-62 for 10th Region title

Reid Jolly scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Campbell County Camels to a 68-62 victory over the Scott Eagles tonight in the championship game of the 10th Region Tournament at The Fieldhouse.

It's Campbell County's third region title in five seasons.

The Camels led 32-21 with 3:20 left in the second quarter, but Scott pulled to within two at 34-32 at the end of the half and led 46-45 at the end of the third quarter. 

Campbell County scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and had the lead the rest of the game.

The Camels were up 65-56 with 38 seconds remaining after Nate Schaefer hit two free throws, but Scott guard Nelson Perrin made two three-pointers to make it interesting.

Perrin's second trey cut Campbell County's lead to four at 66-62 with 18 seconds to play, and the Camels committed a turnover trying to inbound the ball against the Eagles'press.

But Perrin was called for traveling while attempting to shoot another three-pointer.

Campbell County point guard Joel Day sank two free throws to seal the victory.

The Camels outshot the Eagles 54.8 percent to 45.3 percent and won the rebounding battle 33-20.

Tanner Clos scored 13 points including his 1,000th career point for Campbell County.

Day and Drew Wilson scored 11 points apiece.

Perrin led Scott in scoring with 19 points.

Trey Meister tossed in 16 points and Chad Ohmer added 14 points.

Jolly, Day, Clos, Wilson, Perrin, Meister and Ohmer were named to the All Tournament Team.

Campbell County will play 2nd Region champion University Heights Academy in the first round of  the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 at noon on Thursday, March 15 at Rupp Arena.

Campbell Co, and Scott win in the semis, will meet in the championship game

The Campbell County Camels and the Scott Eagles will meet in the championship of the 10th Region Tournament for the second straight year.

In tonight's semifinals at The Fieldhouse, Campbell County blew a 16-point lead and trailed by three in the final minute of the fourth quarter, but pulled out a 76-71 victory over the Clark County Cardinals in overtime, and Scott outscored Paris 17-2 in the fourth quarter for a 46 -43 win over the Greyhounds.

Campbell County led 40-24 in the second quarter and was up 40-29 at the half, but Clark County rallied and took a 63-60 lead on an old fashioned three-point play by Will Philpot with 2:01 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Reid Jolly tied the game with a trey with 30 seconds to play.

The Cardinals played for the last shot and missed a three-pointer.

The Camels scored the first six points in overtime.

Clark County closed to within three points when Brennan Canada banked in a three-pointer with 1:20 to go.

Campbell County point guard Joel Day sank  2-of-3 free throws in a span of 13 seconds give the Camels a 74-68 lead with one minute to play.

After Clark County guard Chase Taylor drained a three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining, Day sealed the victory with two free throws with 15.9 seconds left.

Day scored a game-high 31 points. He hit four three-pointers and made 13-of-15 free throws, including 9-of-11 in overtime. 

Jolly scored 17 points and Drew Wilson added 12 points. 

Jordan Graham led Clark County in scoring with 24 points.

Philpot had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He fouled out with 3:57 left in overtime.

Canada had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Taylor added 10 points.

Graham and Philpot were named to the All-Tournament Team,

In the second game, Paris led 41-29 at the end of the third quarter, but Scott opened the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run.

The Greyhounds did not have a field goal in the fourth quarter. Their only points in the quarter were two free throws made by Jalen Byars to give Paris its final lead at 43-42 with 1:58 to play.

The Eagles regained the lead on a basket by Nathan Joyce with 1:35 remaining.

Scott junior guard Kyren Simpson  sank two free throws with 21 seconds left to give the Eagles a 46-43 lead.

Paris missed two three-point shots in the closing seconds.

The Greyhounds were 0-of-9 from the field and 2-of-7 on free throws in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles hit 9-of-12 shots from beyond the arc in the game 

Nelson Perrin was 4-of-4 on three-point shots and had a game-high 13 points for Scott.

Simpson made three treys and scored 11 points.

Eric Johnson led Paris in scoring with 11 points.

Byars had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds,

Travis Strings tossed in 10 points.

Johnson and Byars were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The championship game tips off Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The Fieldhouse.

Campbell County beat Scott 84-73 in the regular season and 58-57 in the championship game of the 37th District.

The Eagles edged the Camels 78-77 on Jake Ohmer's three-pointer at the buzzer in the 10th Region Tournament championship game last year.

Camels top Royals 77-68

The Campbell County  Camels scored the final six points of the game to seal a 77-68 victory over the Mason County Royals tonight at The Fieldhouse.

There were five ties and nine lead changes in the game.

Campbell County led by eight points in the second quarter.

Mason County was up 56-50 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but Campbell County went on a  17-4 run to lead 67-60 with just under five minutes to play.

The Royals closed to within 71-68 with 1:19 left, but the Camels hit 6 of 6 free throws in the final minute to record their 13th victory.

With Campbell County's leading scorer on the season- Reid Jolly-  sidelined with an injury and an illness, senior guard Tanner Clos stepped up and scored a game-high 29 points.

Joel Day and Drew Wilson scored 12 points apiece. 

Nate Schafer, who was averaging 1.8 points a game, scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter. He hit three three-pointers.

Mason County only played six players. Freshman guard Jeremiah Jones was out sick.

Leevi Dunaway also was under the weather, but he scored a team-high 19 points.

Jayden Steward scored 18 points, Jaylen Lofton had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Dalton Perkins followed with 10 points.

Mason County plays Holmes in Covington Saturday.

Ohmer's 3 at the buzzer sends the Scott Eagles to state

Jake Ohmer hit a contested three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Scott Eagles a 78-77 win over the Campbell County Camels in the championship game of the 10th Region Tournament tonight at the Mason County Fieldhouse.

Scott had a 20-point lead in the second quarter and was up 43-31 at the half.

Campbell County, which shot 76 percent from the field in the second half, rallied and took its first lead at 65-64 with 4:21 left in the game.

The Camels were up 72-67 with 2:30 to go, but Scott made back-to-back layups off steals to get to within a point.

Campbell County point guard Joel Day hit two free throws to push the lead back out to three.

After Vincent Dumlao scored for Scott, Day made two more free throws and the Camels were up 76-73 with 30 seconds left.

Nelson Perrin made a layup for Scott with 20 seconds to play.

Cole Hegyi made one of two free throws to give Campbell County a 77-75 lead with 13 seconds left.

After a timeout, Scott drove into front court and Jaycob Pouncey missed a long three-pointer. 

Ohmer ran down the rebound, drove into the right corner and shot the game winner.

The ball bounced on the rim and fell through, giving Scott its first 10th Region championship.

The Eagles won the 9th Region championship in 1989.

Ohmer scored 21 of his game-high 30 points in the first half.

Hegyi led Campbell County in scoring with 20 points.

Scott will play 13th Region champion Harlan County in the first round of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 Wednesday, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Rupp Arena.
