Nick Nelson 2nd Team All State

Nick Nelson of Mason County was named Second Team All-State by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Nelson, the ace of the Royals' pitching staff, has signed with Xavier University.

Austin Crawford of Bracken County received Honorable Mention recognition.

Crawford will play basketball at Morehead State University.

Nick Nelson signs with Xavier University

Mason County senior pitcher Nick Nelson signed with Xavier University this afternoon.

Nelson verbally committed to the Musketeers in July.

He said the recruitment happened fast. Xavier attended one of his games and made an offer.

"I went on a visit the day before and I  just knew it was the perfect place for me," Nelson said. "Small, cozy campus; everything about it was just (a) perfect fit."

Nelson plans to major in pre-med.

Nelson had a 6-2 record and posted a 1.65 earned run average for Mason County last season. He had 106 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched.

Nelson was selected for the Junior All-Star team and was named All-State Honorable Mention by the Kentucky High School Baseball Association.

Here are a few news and notes as you wait for high school football playoff action and a weekend of college and professional football:

• Mason County senior Nick Nelson will sign to play baseball at Xavier University Monday, November 14 at 3:30 p.m. 
• The time for Whitney O'Mara's signing ceremony has been changed to 2 p.m. on November 10th. O'Mara, a Mason County senior, will sign to play basketball at Bellarmine University.
• Darius Miller scored 27 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Brose Bamberg to a 106-102 win in overtime in Euroleague play. He was named MVP of the game.
• Applebee's Flapjack Fundraiser to support the Mason County Lady Royals basketball team is Saturday from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. You need a ticket from a player or coach before the event. 

Williams and Nelson receive All-State recognition

Two Mason County players- Darren Williams and Nick Nelson-have received All-State recognition by the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Williams,a senior this past season, was named to the Third Team. Nelson, a rising senior, received Honorable Mention recognition. 

Williams and Nelson named 10th Region All-Stars

Two Mason County baseball players- senior Darren Williams and junior Nick Nelson- were named 10th Region All-Stars in a vote by the coaches in the region. The Sophomore Showcase and Junior All-Star Game will be played at Asbury University next month. Here is a complete list of the award winners:
