Jordan Gilbert named boys' basketball coach at Nelson County

Former Mason County Royal Jordan Gilbert is the new boys' basketball coach at Nelson County High School in Bardstown.

Gilbert resigned from his position as boys' basketball coach at Green County last month after three seasons at the helm.

"My family and I are looking forward to new beginnings in Bardstown and competing in the 19th District!" Gilbert wrote in a post on X.

Gilbert, a 2011 graduate of Mason County High School, was inducted into the 10th Region Hall of Fame last month.

Gilbert, who was named the Kentucky Boys' Coach of the Year by KyHighMedia last month, announced his resignation on Facebook and X.

The Dragons went 57-34 in three seasons under Gilbert, including a 24-4 record and a district championship this past season. Green County lost to North Hardin 63-60 in the semifinals of the 5th Region Tournament last month.

Gilbert, a 2011 graduate of Mason County High School, was an assistant coach at Mason County before taking the Green County head coaching position.

He was inducted into the 10th Region Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Green County falls, Adair County advances in 5th Region Tournament

The Green County Dragons, coached by former Mason County Royal Jordan Gilbert, lost to the North Hardin Trojans 63-60 in overtime in the semifinals of the 5th Region Tournament at Marion County on Monday night.

Green County finished the season with a 24-4 record. KyHighMedia named Gilbert the Kentucky Boys Coach of the Year.

In the other semifinal, Adair County, coached by former Mason County student Deron Breeze, defeated Caverna 56-49.

The championship game is tonight. Adair County will be going for its second straight region title.

Random notes

 Here are a few random notes:

• The Mason County Royals tennis team opened the season on Tuesday with a 8-1 win over the Georgetown G-Men. The Royals and Lady Royals will host Scott County today.

• Landon Scilley made his first collegiate pitching appearance on Tuesday tossing a scoreless inning in Liberty's 6-4 loss to Clemson. Scilley started the game as the designated hitter. He drew two walks, went 1-for-2 and scored a run.

• Former Mason County Royal Jordan Gilbert guided his Green County Dragons to a 64-62 victory over the Taylor County Cardinals on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the 5th Region Tournament at Marion County. Green County will play North Hardin in the semifinals on Monday night. 

• The other semifinal game in the 5th Region Tournament will pit Adair County against Caverna. Adair County, coached by former Mason County resident Deron Breeze, beat Central Hardin 69-52 in the quarterfinals on Monday night.

Blake Reed becomes 10th Region's all-time leading scorer and hits game winner for the Royals

A few minutes after becoming the 10th Region's all-time leading scorer, Blake Reed hit a buzzer-beater corner 3-pointer to give the Mason County Royals an 80-77 come-from-behind win over the Green County Dragons in the Mike Murphy Champions Classic at The Fieldhouse on Friday night.

After trailing by 12 points at halftime, Mason County came back to lead 55-51 in the third quarter.

The Royals would need another rally after Green County led 72-65 with 3:51 remaining in the game.

Reed started the rally with an and-1. Jake Feldhaus followed with a putback. Reed tied the game with a layup.

Greenup County scored to lead 74-72.

Reed put Mason County back in front and surpassed Tollesboro's Chris Harrison as the region's all-time leading scorer with a 3-pointer at the 1:50 mark. Cayden Reed's basket gave the Royals a 77-74 lead.

Green County tied the game with a 3-pointer with six seconds to go.

After a timeout, Mason County drove into front court and tried to go inside, but the ball went out of bounds off of Green County.

The Royals took their final timeout before Blake Reed hit the game-winning basket.

There were 11 ties and 11 lead changes in the game.

Mason County scored 33 points off Green County's 18 turnovers.

Blake Reed finished with four 3-pointers and a game-high 28 points.

Cayden Reed had 21 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Landon Scilley scored 16 points on 8-of-11 from the field.

Feldhaus scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds despite playing less than 12 minutes due to foul trouble.

Mason County (3-1) will play Lexington Christian Academy in the final game of the Mike Murphy Champions Classic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Green County (1-3), coached by former Royal Jordan Gilbert, will play Augusta in Saturday's second game at 2:30.

Paula Buser returning as Mason County Lady Royals' head coach

Paula Buser was named the girls' basketball head coach at Mason County High School today.

Buser was a senior and the leading scorer on the school's first team in the 1974-75 season and she had a 153-93 record as the Lady Royals' head coach from the 2000-01 season through the 2007-08 season.

As the head coach, she guided the Lady Royals to six district championships and three 10th Region runner-up finishes.

Buser was elected to the 10th Region Hall of Fame in 2013.

Kevin Bundy resigned in March after one season as the Lady Royals' head coach. Jordan Gilbert was named the girls' head coach on May 6 and coached the Lady Royals during summer basketball. But he resigned earlier this month to become the boys' head coach at Green County.

An official introduction of Buser will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in the Mason County High School Library. 

The search is on for new girls' basketball coach at Mason County

Mason County High School is accepting applications for the head coach of the girls' basketball team following the resignation of Jordan Gilbert who is the new boys' head coach at Green County High School.

The search for the new coach will begin immediately according to a press release from the high school.

Jordan Gilbert named head boys' basketball coach at Green County High School

Less than two months after becoming the head girls' basketball coach at Mason County, Jordan Gilbert has been hired as the head boys' basketball coach at Green County High School in Greensburg.

Gilbert, a 2011 graduate of Mason County High School and an assistant coach for the Mason County Royals the past four seasons, took the Lady Royals' head coaching job on May 6.

Kevin Bundy resigned as the Lady Royals' coach in March after one season.

Green County is coming off a 14-13 season. The Dragons lost to Hart County in the semifinals of the 18th District Tournament.

Green County is in the 5th Region.

Bryson Bennett is the new boys' golf coach at Mason County

Bryson Bennett is the new boys' golf coach at Mason County High School.

Bennett will be the Royals' third coach in three seasons. He succeeds Jordan Gilbert who took over when Chad Mefford stepped down in August during the 2021 season. Gilbert was named the Mason County girls' basketball coach last week.

Bennett is a business and marketing teacher, FBLA advisor and assistant boys' basketball coach at Mason County High School.

Maysville--- The Mason County High School Athletic Department would like to announce Coach Jordan Gilbert as the new Head Girls Basketball Coach at Mason County High School.

Coach Gilbert has been an assistant with the Mason County High School boys basketball program for the past four seasons. Previously he served as an assistant at Madison Central and Mercer County.

Coach Gilbert is a 2011 graduate of Mason County High School. During his time with the Royals, he was a 4-time 39th District Champion, a 2008 KHSAA State Champion, and a 2010 KHSAA Final Four Participant. Following his playing days with the Royals, Coach Gilbert continued his academic and athletic career at Transylvania University before transferring to Asbury University where he completed his coursework, while being a dual-sport athlete for the Eagles (Basketball and Golf).

Coach Gilbert has been serving as the Mason County Middle School Physical Education teacher since the 2018-19 academic school year. Coach Gilbert and his wife, Chelsea, have one son, Jace.

An official introduction is scheduled for Monday, May 9, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. in the Mason County High School Library and Media Center.

Jordan Gilbert promoted to Associate Head Coach of the Mason County Royals

The Mason County Royals basketball program announced today that Varsity Assistant Coach Jordan Gilbert has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.

Gilbert, a 2011 graduate of Mason County High School, joined Head Coach Brian Kirk's coaching staff in 2018.

Here are some local sports news and notes:

• Former Mason County basketball and football standout Jordan Gilbert has joined the boys' basketball coaching staff at Clark County. Gilbert played college basketball at Transylvania University and Asbury University. He was the freshman coach at Mercer County last season. 
• Mason County senior Whitney O'Mara started and scored four points for the Kentucky All-Stars in an 82-74 victory in the 26th Annual Holloway Ohio-Kentucky All-Star Game Sunday.
• The Mason County football team began spring practice Monday. The spring game is scheduled on April 27.
• The KHSAA State Archery Championship is Thursday, April 20 at Kentucky Basketball Academy in Lexington. Mason County archers competing in the state championship include Landen Bowling, Joshua Brown, DeAnna Roberts and Anthony Ventura. Gates open to the public at 8:30 a.m.
• May 30th-June 1st are the dates for the St. Patrick Saints Basketball Camp. The camp is for girls and boys in grades 2 through 8 in the 2017-18 school year. The fee is $35 per child if enrolled by May 19th or $40 after May 19th.
• The 5th Annual Darius Miller and Chris Lofton Skills Camp is set for June 21st-23rd at the Tom Browning Boys and Girls Club. The early bid fee is $100 until May 1st. The fee after May 1st is $125.Check out the camp website for more information.

A Busy Weekend for Local College Basketball Players

It was a busy weekend for local college basketball players. Here's an update on those guys and a couple of other notes:

- Ohio University senior Treg Setty scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Bobcats to a 73-57 win over Indiana Tech in an exhibition game Saturday. Setty also had five rebounds, four steals, two assists and one block. Ohio opens the season this Saturday at home against Florida Gulf Coast.

- Asbury University senior Jordan Gilbert tossed in 15 points to lead the Eagles to an 82-68 victory over Miami-Middletown Saturday in the Rio Grande Classic. He also had three rebounds and an assist. Gilbert had eight points, five steals and one rebound in Asbury's 68-55 loss to Taylor University Friday night in the Rio Grande Classic.

- Former Bracken County standout Todd Jefferson is a senior at Asbury. He had two points, one steal and one assist in Friday night's game. He started Saturday night and scored 11 points and had one assist.

- Bellarmine University sophomore Brent Bach started and scored seven points in the Knights' 81-60 loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in an exhibition game Saturday. Bach also had one rebound and one assist.

- Dorian Henry had eight points, six rebounds, one assist and one block, and Zaire Henry had four points, four assists and one rebound in UC-Clermont's 97-55 loss to the University of Pikeville Saturday night in the Danny VanHoose Classic at Pikeville. Dorian and Zaire are freshmen on Coach Greg Himes' team. 

-  Two former Fleming County Panthers contributed to Georgetown College's 85-64 win over West Virginia Polytechnic Institute Saturday. Redshirt freshman Troy Steward had seven points, one rebound, one assist and one steal, and sophomore Darion Burns had two assists, one point and one steal.

- No. 1 seed Scott was the only Class 4A District 7 team to win in the first round of the football playoffs. Scott defeated Rowan County 33-26. No. 2 seed Harrison County lost to Greenup County 17-15. No. 3 seed Bourbon County lost to Ashland 42-21. No. 4 seed Holmes was routed by Johnson Central 41-0. In this week's second round games, Scott hosts Ashland and Johnson Central hosts Greenup County.

- 55 years ago tonight, the Mason County Royals played their first varsity basketball game-a 44-43 win over Owingsville. 

Royals beat Grant County 66-44

The Mason County Royals used their height advantage to beat the Grant County Braves 66-44 this afternoon at Grant County. The Braves don't have players taller than 6-1. Mason County's 6-9 senior forward Treg Setty scored 26 points (12 in the first quarter) and grabbed 13 rebounds. 6-2 junior Tyler Black had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Mason County had 14 assists and attempted just seven three-pointers. The Royals outscored the Braves 11-3 in the second quarter to lead 27-13 at the half, and scored the first two points of the third quarter. Grant County cut the deficit to 10 at 36-26. Mason County answered by scoring 13 consecutive points. The Royals led by as many as 25 in the fourth quarter. Jordan Gilbert added 10 points for Mason County. The Royals host Montgomery County Tuesday night.

Royals outlast Fleming County 69-60

Treg Setty and Tyler Black combined for 43 points and 29 rebounds to lead the Mason County Royals to a 69-60 win over the Fleming County Panthers tonight at The Fieldhouse. Mason County had first half leads of 7-0, 20-10 and 30-22. But Fleming County scored the last eight points of the second quarter to tie the game at 30-30. The Panthers opened the third quarter with four straight points to lead 34-30. Mason County led 49-47 at the end of the third quarter and outscored Fleming County 20-13 in the fourth quarter. Setty had 22 points and 19 rebounds. Black scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jordan Gilbert added 16 points. Mason County has won three straight games. The Royals host Rowan County Friday night in the Pepsi/Mountain Dew Classic.

The Mason County Royals held the John Hardin Bulldogs to 22 points below their scoring average in a 60-49 victory tonight in the Joe B. Hall Kentucky Prep Classic at Montgomery County. Treg Setty had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds and was named the Pat Doyle Most Valuable Player of the Game. Tyler Black scored 12 points. Jordan Gilbert and Josh Harris each added 10 points. Mason County hosts Fleming County Tuesday night.

Royals top Simon Kenton 67-52

The Mason County Royals started fast and finished strong in a 67-52 victory over the Simon Kenton Pioneers tonight at The Fieldhouse. The Royals jumped out to a 9-0 lead as the Pioneers missed their first nine shots. Mason County took a 20-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Simon Kenton got to within 12 with 5:03 to go, but the Royals responded with six straight points and snapped a two-game losing steak. Treg Setty had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Tyler Black was 7-of-7 from the field and scored 17 points. Jordan Gilbert added 15 points. Mason County plays John Hardin Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the 20th Annual Joe B. Hall Kentucky Preps Classic at Montgomery County.

Royals lose to Lafayette 62-60 in OT

The Mason County Royals lost to the Lafayette Generals 62-60 in overtime tonight at The Fieldhouse in a game that had 10 ties and 20 lead changes. Both teams were missing a starter- Mason County was without Josh Harris due to an injury while Lafayette 6'7" freshman starter Jackson Davis and reserve Tranard Chester sat out the game for disciplinary reasons. Another starter and another reserve quit the team earlier in the week. The Generals led 62-58 with 33.5 seconds left. Tyler Black's putback cut the deficit to two with 3.1 seconds to go. After a timeout, Mason County forced a turnover with 1.1 second to play, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Lafayette senior guard Dee Yarbrough scored a game-high 27 points. Treg Setty led Mason County in scoring with 17 points before fouling out with 2:30 left in overtime. Jordan Gilbert and Tyler Black scored 17 points apiece. Mason County hosts Simon Kenton Tuesday night.
