Mikah Turner leads Eastside to Maysville Classic championship; King and Moore inducted into HOF

Eastside, led by former Mason County Royal Mikah Turner, won the Maysville Classic on Sunday at the Lady Royals Gym. 

Turner won the Ron Bailey Most Valuable Player Award.

In the championship game, Turner scored 21 points and hit five 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 34 points.

Paul King and Pat Moore were posthumously inducted into the Maysville Classic Hall of Fame on Sunday afternoon. King and Moore are the Hall of Fame's first two inductees.

Mikah Turner Inducted into Mountaineer Men's Basketball Hall of Distinction

Former Mason County and Berea College basketball standout Mikah Turner was inducted into the Mountaineer Men's Basketball Hall of Distinction last Saturday during Homecoming Weekend at Berea College.

Turner scored 2,083 career points at Berea College. He led the nation in scoring with an average of 27.7 points per game his senior season (2009-10).

He was the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was named to the NAIA Division II All-America Third Team in 2010.

Berea College senior Mikah Turner of Maysville was named to the NAIA Division II All-America Third Team. Turner averaged 27.6 points a game this season. He shot 55% from the field, 41.7% on three-pointers and 65% from the free throw line. Turner was named the KIAC Player of the Year earlier this month.

He shot 55% from the field, 41.7% on three-pointers and 65% from the free throw line. Turner scored a career-high 45 points vs. OSU Mansfield on Dec. 19. He scored 30 or more points in 14 games this season.

Turner scores 25 points in a loss in the KIAC Tournament

Mikah Turner scored 25 points for Berea College in a 105-89 loss to Cincinnati Christian University in the first round of the KIAC Tournament Tuesday night. Turner was 10-of-17 from the field including 5-of-9 on three-pointers.

Mikah Turner scores 2,000th career point, is KIAC Player of the Week

Mikah Turner scored 35 points including his 2,000th career point to lead Berea College to a 96-73 win over Indiana University East Friday night. He was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week today. Turner, the leading scorer in NAIA Division II, was 13-of-24 from the field including 3-of-6 on three-point shots in Friday night's game. He was 6-of-6 from the free throw line and had 12 rebounds. Turner scored 31 points in a 103-90 victory over Cincinnati Christian University Saturday. It was his third 30-point game of the week. Turner has scored 30 or more points in four straight games and in 12 of the last 14 games.

Mikah Turner scored 34 points to lead Berea College to a 126-100 win over Cincinnati Christian University Tuesday night. Turner played all 40 minutes. He was 15-of-21 from the field including 3-of-4 on three-point shots. Turner was 1-of-3 from the free throw line and had eight rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist.

Mikah Turner scored 26 points for Berea College in a 91-87 loss to Indiana University East Monday night. The Mountaineers play at Cincinnati Christian University tonight.

Mikah Turner continues scoring tear

Berea College senior guard Mikah Turner scored 35 points in a 103-88 win over Alice Lloyd College Tuesday night. Turner made 15-of-18 shots including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. He was 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Over the last nine games, Turner is averaging 34.2 points a game. For the season, Turner is averaging 26.8 points per game. He is hitting 54.8% from the field, 41% on three-point shots and 66.3% on free throws. Berea plays at Indiana University East Saturday afternoon.

• Trevor Setty scored 17 points for Pikeville College in a 78-64 victory over Lindsey Wilson. He also had seven rebounds, two assists and one steal;
• Chris Owens scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but Transylvania lost to Manchester 68-64. He also had two assits, one block and one steal;
  
• Darius Miller had three points, two rebounds and two blocks in Kentucky's 72-67 win over Auburn;

• Mikah Turner had a double-double with 36 points and 11 rebounds for Berea College in a 96-41 win over Crown College Friday night. He added two assists and one steal. Turner has scored 30 or more points in five games this season. In his last three games, he has scored 45, 34 and 36 points;
• Chris Owens scored 13 points but Transylvania lost to Anderson 91-72 Saturday. Owens also had three rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal;

Mason County's connections to the National Champions

Do you believe in six degrees of separation? That's the theory that you can be connected to any other person in the world through no more than six connections. Well, the Mason County football program has a couple of connections to a starter on Alabama's national championship team. Alabama defensive end Brandon Deaderick played for Elizabethtown when Mason County and E-town met in the Recreation Bowl in 2004. Then Deaderick was on the Kentucky All-Star football, when Mason County coach David Buchanan was the all-stars head coach. Kentucky beat Tennessee 41-27. Buchanan says Deaderick couldn't sleep the week of the all-star game and would go to the coaches' hotel room and talk throughout the night. Buchanan says he remembers Deaderick saying how good a football player he thought former Royal Mikah Turner was. So there you have it, if you know Buchanan or Turner, you are just two degrees away from Deaderick and three degrees away from the rest of the Crimson Tide.

Mikah Turner scored 34 points for Berea College in an 82-78 loss to Milligan College Monday night. Turner was 11-of-19 from the field including 4-of-5 on three-pointers. He was 8-of-10 from the free throw. Turner leads the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring (23.9 ppg), is third in field goal percentage (51.6%) and is third in rebounding ( 6.7 rpg). Berea is 9-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Mountaineers host Crown College Friday night.

• Mikah Turner scored 23 points for Berea College in a 99-87 loss to Brescia University;
• In his first game with Pikeville College, Trevor Setty led the No. 9 Bears with 21 points in a 114-62 win over Ohio State-Mansfield. Setty, who transferred from Georgetown College, gained his eligibility Friday when the fall semester ended;
  
• Chris Owens had 11 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals for Transylvania in a 79-72 double-overtime loss to Rose Hulman;
• Darius Miller scored seven points and had three rebounds, four assists and one block in Kentucky's 90-73 win over Indiana;
• Kasey Litzinger scored four points and grabbed one rebound for Lindsey Wilson in a 73-72 loss to Midway;

Mikah Turner has back-to-back high scoring games

Berea College senior Mikah Turner had back-to-back high scoring games this week. He scored 32 points in a 94-69 win over Warren Wilson Monday night and tossed in 29 points in a 104-97 loss to Union College Friday night. Turner is averaging 22.1 points a game. Berea College (5-3) hosts Centre College Monday night.

Keeping up with local college athletes

As the football season winds down and the basketball season cranks up, several local college athletes are excelling. Here are a few updates:

• Jackson Tolle had four tackles (including one for a loss) and a forced fumble in Georgetown's 35-17 loss to Lambuth;
• Chris Marshall scored a touchdown on a 10-yard run to help Ohio Wesleyan beat Hiram 38-6;
• Darius Miller scored 11 points and had four rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block in Kentucky's 117-52 exhibition win over Clarion;
• De'Sarae Chambers had six points, two rebounds and one assist and Dayton beat Indiana (Pa.) 56-49 in an exhibition;
• Mikah Turner is off to a fast start for the Berea Mountaineers. He is averaging 21 points a game through three games and he scored a season-high 23 points in a 108-46 win over Boyce College;
• Kasey Litzinger had three rebounds, two assists and one steal for Lindsey Wilson in a 63-54 victory over Indiana University Southeast;
• Wesley Jones started and had five points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal as Central State University beat the University of Toledo 56-49 in an exhibition game.

Mikah Turner named to the All-Conference Team

Berea College junior guard Mikah Turner of Maysville has been named to the All-Conference Team by the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Turner led the KIAC in scoring with an average of 20.36 points per game. He made 96 three-pointers and scored his 1,000th career point this season.

Turner scores 26 points in Berea win and 23 in loss

Mikah Turner scored 26 points and had nine rebounds to lead Berea College to a 73-46 win over St. Louis College of Pharmacy in the opening round of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Thursday. Turner scored 23 points in Berea's 89-72 loss to Indiana University in the semifinals today.
