Tony Adams resigns as head football coach at Mason County

Citing "unforeseen personal and professional issues", Tony Adams has resigned as head football coach at Mason County less than three months after accepting the position.

Adams, an assistant coach at Greenwood High School in Bowling Green, was hired as Mason County's coach on February 8 and introduced to the players and the public on February 14.

Adams was hired to succeed Joe Wynn who resigned on January 9 after four seasons as the Royals' coach to become the head coach at Simon Kenton.

Tony Adams named head football coach at Mason County

Tony Adams has been hired as the head football coach at Mason County High School.

He succeeds Joe Wynn who resigned after four seasons as the Royals' head coach to become the head coach at Simon Kenton.

Mason County High School is excited to announce Tony Adams as our new Head Football Coach.   Coach Adams comes to us from Greenwood High School in Bowling Green, KY  where he has been the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach  for Greenwood HIgh School since 2021. He also served as the Special Teams coordinator in 2020 and has been the Head Coach of the Greenwood Lacrosse team.  Previously, he served as Defensive Coordinator at Portland High School in Tennessee from 2016 - 2019.  


Coach Adams attended Greenwood High School where he played football for legendary high school coach Ed Smart.  Adams received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Mid-Continent University in 2006 and his Master’s in Teaching LBD in K-12 Special Education in 2022 from the University of The Cumberlands. Coach Adams has been married for 21 years to his wife Valerie and together they have 3 children:  Tyler, Aden and Adysen.

Coach Joe Wynn leaving Mason County for Simon Kenton

Mason County head football coach Joe Wynn has resigned to become the head coach at Simon Kenton High School in Independence.

In four seasons as the Royals’ coach, Wynn compiled a record of 36-14 (.720) making him the second winningest coach in the history of the program.


Mason County won its first 13 games of the 2022 season and district and region championships before losing to Bardstown in the state semifinals. The 13 wins are a school record.


Wynn, the 2024 Class 4A District 5 Coach of the Year, will be the 13th head coach at Simon Kenton.


Wynn released a statement on his X account:


In a post on X, Mason County Athletics wrote, “We appreciate Coach Wynn’s hard work and dedication to Mason County High and to the Mason County football program. We wish him nothing but the best in his new position.”


Mason County also announced on X that assistant coach Bradley Boone will be in charge of the football program until a new coach is hired.

Mason County coach Joe Wynn named Class 4A District Coach of the Year by the KFCA

Mason County coach Joe Wynn has been named Class 4A District 5 Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association.

Wynn has guided the Royals to a 7-3 record including 3-1 in district play.

Mason County will host Greenup County on Friday night in the first round of the playoffs.

Royals open the football season Friday night at home vs. Russell

The Mason County Royals will kick off their 46th season of varsity football on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at home vs. the Russell Red Devils.

Russell defeated Mason County 28-8 in the season opener last year.

Mason County had a 6-5 record last season and lost to Boyd County in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Russell lost to Lexington Catholic in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to finish the 2023 season with a 7-5 record.

Mason County and Russell are former district rivals.

Joe Wynn has a record of 28-10 in three seasons as Mason County's head coach.

Mason County football schedule released

Mason County football coach Joe Wynn released the Royals' 2024 schedule in a post on X on Wednesday.

Mason County will play the same opponents as they did last year. Here is the schedule:

Much anticipated home opener for the Mason County football team is Friday night

 


After four straight road games to open the season, plus the bye week, the most anticipated home opener for the Mason County football team in several years will finally take place Friday night when the Royals play host to the Pendleton County Wildcats. The game is sponsored by Meadowview Regional Medical Center,

There is a lot for the team, fans and community to be excited about:

  • The Royals are 4-0.
  • The team is ranked No. 3 in Class 3A in the first RPI rankings of the season released by the KHSAA and is in the top 10 in some of the other rankings.
  • Friday night's game will be the first on the new artificial playing surface.
  • It's the district opener.
  • The Royals are only allowing 13.3 points a game.
  • Coach Joe Wynn, in his second season at Mason County, has a .765 winning percentage.
  • It's the Royals' first home game since last November 4.
Gates open at 6 p.m. The field dedication is at 7 p.m. and kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Mason County opens the football season tonight at Newport

The Mason County Royals open the football season tonight at Newport against the Newport Wildcats.

First-year Mason County head coach Joe Wynn was the head coach at Newport the past three seasons where he compiled an 18-13 record.

Mason County football team wraps up first week of official practice with 7 on 7 tournament at Woodford County

The Mason County Royals football team wrapped up its first week of official practice under new coach Joe Wynn by playing in the Woodford County Bojangles 7 on 7 tournament today.

The Royals practiced Monday-Thursday. They took Friday off before heading to Versailles this morning.

New Mason County football coach Joe Wynn officially introduced

New Mason County Royals football coach Joe Wynn was officially introduced tonight, one day after being named the seventh head coach in the history of the program.

Wynn, who comes to Mason County after three seasons as the head coach of the Newport Wildcats, fielded questions from the media and met with the players.

Wynn said the Royals will feature an exciting spread offense and will fly around on defense.

"Our goal is to win district and we wanna compete for regional championships every year," Wynn said. "We need to beat Fleming County, we're going to."

Wynn was able to get more kids to play football at Newport, and he plans on doing the same at Mason County.

"I want 90 plus [players] in the program," Wynn said.

Joe Wynn is the new head football coach at Mason County

Joe Wynn is the new head football coach at Mason County High School.

Wynn has been the head coach at Newport the past three seasons. He compiled an 18-13 record as the coach of the Wildcats.

In 2018, Wynn was the Kentucky Football Coaches Association District Coach of the Year and the Owen Hauck Coach of the Year after guiding Newport to a 6-5 record.

He has served as the assistant athletic director at Newport since 2019.

Wynn was an assistant head coach and special teams coordinator at Campbell County from 2012-2017.

Wynn succeeds Jonathan Thomas who resigned after six seasons as Mason County's head coach to become the Director of Transportation for the Mason County School District.

An official introduction of Wynn is scheduled Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
