Jones scores 21 points to lead Saints past Fleming County

Brevin Jones hit four three-pointers and scored 21 points to lead the St. Patrick Saints to a 69-56 victory over the Fleming County Panthers Friday night at The Shamrock. 

St. Patrick outscored Fleming County 37-24 in the second half.

Two other Saints joined Jones in double figure scoring- Isaiah Garrison with 13 points and Ben Swolsky with 12 points.

Josh Crump poured in 30 points for the Panthers including 24 in the first half.

St. Patrick is back in action Tuesday night against the Augusta Panthers in Augusta.

Jonathan Thomas named District 7 Coach of the Year for the second straight season

Mason County coach Jonathan Thomas has been named the Class AAAA District 7 Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association for the second straight season.

Thomas guided Mason County to a 7-4 record including a 2-2 mark in district play.

The Royals lost three games in the regular season by a total of 11 points.

Scott running back Nelson Perrin is the Class AAAA District 7 Player of the Year.

Fleming County coach Bill Spencer is the Class AAA District 5 Coach of the Year and Fleming County quarterback Josh Crump is the Class AAA District 5 Player of the Year.

Spencer and Crump will receive their awards at halftime of the Class AAA state championship game between Boyle County and Corbin Friday at 7 p.m.

Thomas and Perrin will receive their awards at halftime of the Class AAAA championship game between Johnson Central and Franklin-Simpson Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

All six state championship games will be played at Kroger Field in Lexington.

Fleming County shuts out Mason County 31-0

Fleming County quarterback Josh Crump passed for 218 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Panthers to a 31-0 victory over the Mason County Royals Friday night in Flemingsburg.

Crump hit Zach Alexander on a 55-yard touchdown pass on the third play of the game.

Mason County committed six turnovers. The Royals have been outscored 65-7 in the first two games of the season. Mason County hosts Rowan County next Friday night.

Mason County at Fleming County Friday night

The Mason County Royals travel to Flemingsburg Friday night to play the Fleming County Panthers.
Here are a few fast facts:
  • Mason County lost their season opener to the Somerset Briar Jumpers 34-7 last week. Somerset scored the final 34 points.
  • The Royals were 1 for 3 in the red zone. Tyrion Fox scored Mason County's only touchdown on a five-yard run.
  • Fleming County scored 49 unanswered points in a 49-7 season-opening victory over the Estill County Engineers.
  • Fleming County quarterback Josh Crump passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns.
  • Mason County leads the series with Fleming County 21-19. The Panthers have won the last two meetings (16-9 in 2014 and 20-0 last season) and will be trying to beat the Royals in three straight games for the first time since winning four in a row from 1992 to 1995.

Royals Play Fleming County in Home Opener

With Mason County moving up to Class AAAA this season, the Royals and the Fleming County Panthers are no longer district opponents, but they remain arch rivals. The Royals play the Panthers in their home opener Friday night at 7:30.

Mason County will be looking to bounce back from last week's 33-6 loss to the Somerset Briar Jumpers.

Fleming County opened the season with a 36-34 road win over the Estill County Engineers.

Fleming County junior quarterback Clayton Browning completed 5 of 8 passes for 78 yards and three touchdowns before suffering an injury on the final play of the first half. He did not play in the second half. Panthers coach Bill Spencer says it will be a game-time decision on whether Browning starts Friday night.

Backup quarterback Josh Crump completed 2 of 4 passes for 40 yards and one touchdown.

T.J. Miller rushed for 92 yards. He recovered three fumbles and returned one for a touchdown.

Mason County coach Jonathan Thomas says the Royals have worked hard this week "trying to clean up and fix all of the mistakes, doing a thousand little things right."

Notes:

- Mason County leads the series 21-18. Fleming County snapped a three-game losing streak against the Royals with a 16-9 victory in Flemingsburg last season;

- This will be the Royals' first home game since last October 17th. Mason County played the final three games of the 2014 season on the road. The Royals were 5-0 at home last season and have a 12-game home field winning streak;

- This will be Mason County's 25th season on the current field;
