Mitchell and Setters qualify for KHSAA state archery tournaments

Mason County archers Dillon Mitchell and Laurelle Setters have qualified for the KHSAA state tournaments. 

Mitchell won the KHSAA Region 7 Boys/Coed Tournament at Fleming County on Saturday. He had a score of 288 with 21 Tens and edged Joseph Eggleston of Robertson County by one point. 

Setters qualified for the state tournament with an 11th place finish in the KHSAA Region 7 Girls' Tournament also at Fleming County.

Harrison County won the Boys/Coed region team championship with a score of 1,969. Fleming County was the runner-up (1,931 with 91 Tens) and Mason County finished third (1,931 with 90 Tens). 

Harrison County also won the Girls' Region Tournament (2,019). Fleming County was the runner-up (1,918). Mason County finished in sixth place (1,848).

Mason County archery teams compete at state and qualify for national tournaments

The Mason County 3D archery team took 19th place and the bullseye archery team finished 35th at the National Archery in Schools Program state tournaments on Saturday in Louisville. Both teams qualified for the national tournament.

Dillon Mitchell led the 3D team with a score of 278. He had 15 Tens. 

Laurelle Setters led the bullseye team with a score of 282. She had 16 Tens.

 Here are some Sunday notes from a busy sports weekend:

• The Mason County archery team was the runner-up at the Pendleton County Winter Warm-Up 2024 on Saturday. The Royals had a team score of 3,298. Harrison County won the tournament with a score of 3,391. Mason County senior Bryce Pollitt was the individual champion with a score of 294 and 24 Tens. Mason County senior Laurelle Setters finished third out of 104 girls. Her score was 286 and she had 19 Tens.

• The Mason County wrestling teams opened the season on Saturday. Caleb Roy was the Royals' Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Warhawk Duals at Great Crossing. He went 3-1 with two pins and one major decision. Breanna Rosenberg was the Lady Royals' Most Outstanding Wrestler with a sixth place solo finish and three pins.

• Trinity sophomore quarterback Zane Johnson, the son of former Mason County Royal Jordan Johnson, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Class 6A state championship football game after leading the Shamrocks to a 42-23 victory over the Ryle Raiders on Saturday. Johnson completed 18-of-24 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. That's two straight state titles for Trinity with Johnson as the starting quarterback. The Shamrocks have 29 state championships.

• The Mason County Royals have shot 51.5% from the field through the first three games of the season. The Royals shot 57.9% vs. Rowan County and 56.9% vs. Augusta.

• Jake Feldhaus is averaging a double-double — 17.7 points and 14 rebounds — for the Madison Central Indians who are off to a 3-0 start. He scored 21 points vs. Lafayette and pulled down 19 rebounds vs. Corbin.

• The Maysville Miners suffered their third straight loss on Saturday night when they fell to the Ohio Kings 120-114 in Cincinnati.

Royal archers win again

The Mason County archery team won its second 3D tournament in as many weeks by posting a team score of 1,652 at the Crusader Quest NASPIBO 3D Challenge at Community Christian Academy in Independence on Saturday.

Conner finished second with a team score of 1,594.

Dillon Mitchell, shooting 291 with 23 Tens, was the overall individual winner.

Laurelle Setters was the girls' winner and was third overall. She shot 281 with 19 Tens. 

Dalton Hargett (280 with 18 Tens) was fourth overall and Bryce Pollitt (274 with 12 Tens) tied for seventh overall. 

Mason County wins Bad to the Bow archery tournament

The Mason County archery team won the Bad to the Bow tournament Saturday at Fleming County with a score of 3,246.

Montgomery County was the runner-up (3,224) and Fleming County finished in third place (3,209).

Mason County junior Laurelle Setters was the individual champion with a score of 290 out of a possible 300. She had 22 Tens.

Two other Mason County archers — Bryce Pollitt and Dillon Mitchell — finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Both shot 284. Pollitt had 18 Tens, Mitchell had 17 Tens.
