Quiz Time
With Rajon Rondo playing point guard for the Boston Celtics in the NBA playoffs, I got an idea for a quiz. How many players can you name who played against Mason County, Maysville or St. Patrick and later went on to play in the NBA? Rondo scored 20 points for Louisville Eastern in a 95-80 loss to Mason County in the 2002 King of the Bluegrass Tournament at Fairdale. (Chris Lofton led the Royals with 31). Without going through all of the records, I can think of one other current NBA player and several former NBA players who played against the local teams during their high school careers. Leave a comment with the players you can come up with.

Allan Houston 87 Ballard
ReplyDeleteTerry Mills 86 Romulus Mich
Frank Kornet 85 Lex Cath
Those three are correct. Everybody should know the current NBA player.
ReplyDeleteIs Taurean Green the active player? I know he played in the 5/3.
ReplyDeleteTaurean Green of Westminster Academy and now with the Denver Nuggets is correct. Green scored 21points in a two-point win over the Royals in the 2001 5th/3rd. For bonus points, which Mason County player tied Green for game-scoring honors. It wasn't C-Lo.
ReplyDeleteRobert Myrick scored 21 pts. Chris had 19.
ReplyDeleteBrian Grant of Georgetown Ohio
ReplyDeleteAnother correct answer. Grant and the G-men routed the Royals in
ReplyDelete1989. Grant scored 25. There's a close to home player no one has listed.
Alvin Sims from Paris High School.
ReplyDeleteSims is the one close to home.
ReplyDeleteThere's at least one other current NBA player who played against Mason County. Here is a hint: It was in the state tournament. There's also at least one former NBA player who played against both Mason County and St. Patrick in the early 1960's.
ReplyDeleteGreg Buckner
ReplyDeleteGreg Buckner, currently a player for the Minnesota Timerwolves, scored seven points for University Heights in the Blazers' win over Mason County in the 1992 state tournament. Here's another hint for the 1960's player who played against both Mason County and St. Patrick. He played for a 10th Region team.
ReplyDeleteCould it be Tom Boerwinkle, MMI? Played for the Chicago Bulls in the NBA.
ReplyDeleteI'll take a guess at Dave Cowens on the player from the 1960's.
ReplyDeleteCowens is a player to add to the list but not the one I gave the hints about. Cowens played for Newport Catholic against both Maysville and Mason County in
ReplyDelete1965. He scored seven points in a win over the Bulldogs and 19 in a victory over the Royals in 1965.
Boerwinkle is the former player who played against both Mason County and St. Patrick.
ReplyDeleteDanny,
ReplyDeleteNice job tonight at the banquet. Being that I was not involved with high school hoops for many years in Ky puts me at a disadvantage to this question but would Herbert Crook of U of L and then the Pacers I believe also qualify? I think he went to Clark County if I remember correctly from camp. May be the best high school player I ever guarded.
I don't know where Crook played high school hoops, but it wasn't
ReplyDeleteat Clark County.
After some tireless research, I found out Crook played at Eastern. He was drafted by the Pacers, but never played a game in the NBA.
ReplyDeleteRalph Davis of Lewis co.
ReplyDeleteRalph Davis, who actually played for Vanceburg, played against Maysville. He played for the Cincinnati Royals and Chicago packers in the NBA.
