Here are a few local sports notes:

• Mason County senior Jake Swolsky has committed to play basketball at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati. Swolsky averaged 5.3 points and 2.6 rebounds a game last season. His older brother, Ben, a graduate of St. Patrick High School, will be a junior at Mount St. Joseph next season.

• Mason County senior Max Moran was one of six students in the state to be named a 2020 Ag Athlete of the Year by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture. Moran was an offensive and defensive lineman for the Royals football team.

• Registration is still underway for the Kentucky Shines #Team Kentucky Virtual Half Marathon. This is a virtual race where you run, walk, hike or treadmill 13.1 miles by May 2nd. Finishers will receive a commemorative shirt and Ky Shines finishers medal. The race benefits God's Pantry Food Bank and the Team Kentucky Fund established by Governor Steve Beshear. The cost is $30 for adults and $20 for kids 12 and under. Registration continues through May 2nd. Registration site.

Braden May's buzzer-beater corner 3 gives Royals a 67-66 win over Bourbon County

Braden May made a buzzer-beater corner three to give the Mason County Royals a 67-66 win over the Bourbon County Colonels in the quarterfinal round of the 10th Region Tournament tonight at The Fieldhouse.

Mason County made 5-of-7 three pointers in the first quarter and had a 11-point lead in the second quarter, but Bourbon County roared back and took its first lead of the second half at 59-57 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

That was the first of four lead changes in the closing minutes.

The game was tied at 59-59, 61-61, 63-63 and 64-64.

Billy Murphy made a layup to give the Colonels a 66-64 lead with 16 seconds to play.

Mason County called timeout and coach Brian Kirk said he told his team they were going for the win with a three-pointer.

May hit his second straight game winning basket.

Mason County shot a season-best 65.6 percent from the field and made 8-of-14 three-pointers for 57.1 percent.

The Royals have their first four-game winning streak of the season and are 15-15.

Jake Swolsky led Mason County in scoring with 19 points. Xylon Frey followed with 15 points, Carson Brammer added 12 points and Jaylen Lofton had eight points and eight assists.

The Royals will play the Campbell County Camels in the upper bracket semifinal game Friday at 6 p.m.

Mason County swept by Harrison County in a boys and girls DH

The Mason County Royals and Lady Royals were swept by Harrison County in a boys and girls doubleheader tonight in Cynthiana.

The Royals rallied from a 16-point third quarter deficit to tie the game with a minute to play, but lost to the Thorobreds, 75-70.
Harrison County's final eight points were on free throws.

The Lady Royals trailed the Fillies 22-8 at the end of the first quarter of a 72-49 loss.

Emma Taylor and Sam Schumacher led the Lady Royals in scoring with 13 points apiece.

The Royals were led in scoring by Jeremiah Jones with a career-high 23 points. Carson Brammer scored 12 points. Jake Swolsky tossed in 11 points and Xylon Frey added 10 points.

Tuesday night is Senior Night at Mason County. The Lady Royals play the Bourbon County Lady Colonels, followed by the Royals against the Bishop Brossart Mustangs.

Royals start slow, lose to Boyd County

The Mason County Royals got off to a slow start and lost to the Boyd County Lions 71-58 at Boyd County.

After Mason County took a 2-0 lead, Boyd County scored 14 straight points.

The Lions led 25-9 at the end of the first quarter and 42-18 late in the second quarter.

Mason County closed to within 15 points at 52-37 in the third quarter, but Boyd County answered with a 10-2 run to take a 23-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Carson Brammer led the Royals in scoring with 12 points. Jake Swolsky added 10 points.

Mason County plays at Montgomery County Tuesday night.

A 26-point loss to Frankfort moves Royals to consolation bracket of Gateway Holiday Classic

The Mason County Royals' next two games will be in the consolation bracket of the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County after a 94-68 loss to the Frankfort Panthers in the opening game of the tournament this afternoon.

There were three ties and two lead changes in the first half, and Mason County trailed by just six points, 40-34, at the half, but the Panthers outscored the Royals 32-13 in the third quarter.

Frankfort shot 50 percent from the field and outrebounded Mason County 52-37.

The Royals shot 31.7 percent from the field in the second half.

The start of game was delayed 20 minutes because Frankfort, which was the away team on the bracket, came out in its home white uniforms, and Mason County was wearing its white uniforms. The teams were warming up when the issue was reported to the game officials. The Panthers changed into their road uniforms when they finally arrived.

Jeremiah Jones scored a career-high 21 points for the Royals. Jake Swolsky added a season-high 13 points.

Mason County will play the West Carter Comets Saturday at 2 p,m in the consolation bracket semifinals. West Carter loss to Harrison County 59-54 in today's second game.

Royals rally from a 20-0 deficit for a 35-32 victory over Morgan County

The Mason County Royals rallied from a 20-0 deficit and defeated the Morgan County Cougars 35-32 tonight on Homecoming.

It looked like Morgan County was going to go up by four scores early in the second quarter after a high punt snap gave the Cougars the ball on the Royals' 13 yard line. But on the ensuing play Jayden Riggs intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Mason County got on the scoreboard with 3:38 left in the second quarter on a 30-yard run by quarterback Carson Brammer.

After the teams traded turnovers in the opening four minutes of the third quarter (Colton Riggs with an interception for the Royals), Brammer scored on a one-yard run.

Morgan County answered with a 41-yard touchdown pass.

Brammer threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jake Swolsky. Three plays later Cole Jones picked off a pass and the Royals took a 27-26 lead on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Brammer to Cody Jones.

Morgan County regained the lead with an 80-yard scoring drive.

Mason County answered with a 65-yard scoring drive capped off by a four-yard run by Seth Chambers with 3:02 to play. Brammer tossed a conversion pass to Jayden Riggs.

After back-to-back sacks by Jared Collins, Morgan County tried a double-reverse flea flicker on 3rd down and 22 from its own 31 yard line. The Cougars had a receiver behind the Royals' defense, but the pass was under thrown and was intercepted by Jayden Riggs with 51 seconds to play.

Mason County ran out the clock to even its record at 2-2.

"This is a huge win for us," Mason County coach Jonathan Thomas said.

Brammer completed 8-of-19 passes for 115 yards and two interceptions.

Chambers rushed for 150 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.

Mason County has an open date next week before beginning district play at Scott on September 21.

Jake Swolsky ruled eligible at Mason County

St. Patrick transfer Jake Swolsky has been ruled eligible at Mason County by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Swolsky averaged 11.4 points and 4.6 rebounds a game for the Saints last season. He also played soccer and baseball at St. Patrick.

Swolsky is a junior.

Saints fall to Ryle in final home game

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Ryle Raiders 70-59 Saturday night in the final game of the season at

The Shamrock.

Ryle led 22-9 at the end of the first quarter and 41-22 at the half.

The Saints outscored the Raiders 23-14 in the third quarter to make it interesting, but Ryle outscored St. Patrick 15-14 in the fourth quarter.

Jake Swolsky led St. Patrick in scoring with 18 points.

Chandler Black tossed in 15 points and Ben Swolsky add 13 points. 

The Saints play at Villa Madonna Tuesday night.

St. Patrick and Robertson Co. split a DH

St. Patrick and Robertson County split a girls and boys doubleheader tonight on St. Patrick's Senior Night.

In the girls game, the St. Patrick Lady Saints ran their winning streak to four games with a 40-36 victory.

The Lady Saints trailed 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, but rallied to within two at the end of the first half and outscored the Lady Devils 24-18 in the second half including 10-6 in the fourth quarter.

Libby Gallenstein and Elizabeth McKay led St. Patrick in scoring with 11 points apiece.

In the boys game, the Robertson County Black Devils held off St. Patrick's late rally for an 80-73 win.

The Saints trailed by 17 points in the first quarter before rallying to tie the game at 69-69 with 2:37 to play, but the Black Devils made 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch.

Brevin Jones hit six three-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points for the Saints.

Jake Swolsky made four three-pointers and followed with 22 points.

Baylen Bauer added 11 points.

St. Patrick and Silver Grove play a girls and boys doubleheader Thursday night at Silver Grove.

Saints go 2-0, Lady Saints 1-1 on eastern Kentucky trip

The St. Patrick Saints went 2-0 and the St. Patrick Lady Saints went 1-1 on an overnight trip to eastern Kentucky.

Six Saints scored in double figures in a 97-40 rout of the Riverside Christian Rams Friday night at Lost Creek.

St. Patrick led 30-6 at the end of the first quarter and 61-17 at halftime.

Patrick McKay and Chandler Black scored 15 points apiece. 

Riley Mastin followed with 14 points, Isaiah Garrison and Jake Swolsky each tossed in 11 points and Paul Muelhbauer added 10 points.

The Saints defeated the Jackson City Tigers 74-70 Saturday afternoon despite a 29-point performance by Jackson City freshman Dawson Duff.

The game was tied at 17-17 at the end the first quarter. St. Patrick outscored Jackson City 22-13 in the second quarter.

Jake Swolsky led the Saints in scoring with 17 points. 

Brevin Jones scored 16 points, Garrison followed with 13 points and Ben Swolsky added 10 points.

The Saints host the Dayton Greendevils Tuesday night at 7:30.

The Lady Saints defeated Riverside Christian 31-25 Friday night and lost to Jackson City 58-36 Saturday afternoon.

Saints lose to NewCath

St. Patrick hung with Newport Central Catholic for a quarter, but the Thoroughbreds outscored the Saints 30-9 in the second quarter on their way to a 93-50 victory tonight in Newport.

Isaiah Garrison, playing in his first game after transferring from Mason County, led St. Patrick in scoring with 14 points.

Ben Swolsky, who had knee surgery last summer, saw his first action after missing the Saints' first 17 games. He scored 12 points.

Jake Swolsky added 10 points.

St. Patrick was without Brevin Jones who was serving the final game of a two-game suspension for picking up two technical fouls in the Saints' loss to Augusta in the 10th Region All "A" Classic.

The Saints host the Fleming County Panthers Friday night.

Robertson Co. and St. Patrick split doubleheader

Robertson County and St. Patrick split a boys and girls doubleheader tonight at Robertson County.

Alex Schalch scored 30 points to lead the Black Devils to a 92-67 victory over the Saints.

The St. Patrick Lady Saints led 30-11 at halftime in the girls game and hung on for a 50-44 win to snap a five-game losing streak.

St. Patrick sophomore Libby Gallenstein hit six three-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points before fouling out with 4:08 left in the game.

Elizabeth McKay added 10 points for the Lady Saints.

The Saints were led in scoring by Brevin Jones with 24 points.

Patrick McKay followed with 14 points and Jake Swolsky added 12 points.

Saints lose to Eminence 80-67 in Louisville Collegiate Classic

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Eminence Warriors 80-67 today in the fifth place game of the Louisville Collegiate Classic after being outscored 46-30 in the second half.

The Saints led 37-34 at halftime, but were outscored 26-18 in the third quarter and 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

Jake Swolsky had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Baylen Bauer hit four three-pointers and scored 17 points.

Patrick McKay added 11 points.

St. Patrick's next game is Thursday night against the Robertson County Black Devils at Robertson County.

Jones' last second shot pushes Saints past Brown 77-75

Brevin Jones made a last second shot to give the St. Patrick Saints a 77-75 win over the Brown Bears tonight in the consolation bracket of the Louisville Collegiate Classic.

The Saints outscored the Bears 23-18 in the fourth quarter.

St. Patrick had balanced scoring as Baylen Bauer and Jake Swolsky each logged 24 points, while Jones tossed in 15 points and Chandler Black added 12 points.

St. Patrick will play Eminence in the fifth place game Saturday at 4:15 p.m.

Saints lose to Louisville Collegiate 67-42

The St. Patrick Saints lost to the Louisville Collegiate Titans 67-42 tonight in the Louisville Collegiate Classic.

The Titans outscored the Saints 31-14 in the second half to run their winning streak to eight games and their record to 13-1.

Jake Swolsky led St. Patrick in scoring with 14 points. Patrick McKay followed with 13 points and Brevin Jones added 10 points.

St. Patrick's next game in the Louisville Collegiate Classic is Friday at 6 p.m.

Saints are champions of Rose Hill All Private School Invitational

The St. Patrick Saints defeated the Rose Hill Royals 70-56 today to win the championship of the Rose Hill All Private School Invitational.

The Saints led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and 38-14 at halftime.

Baylen Bauer hit five three-pointers and led St. Patrick in scoring with 22 points.

Jake Swolsky followed with 16 points and Brevin Jones added 14 points.

The St. Patrick Saints lost to June Buchanan 78-70 and defeated Piarist School 72-37 today in the Rose Hill All Private School Invitational in Ashland.

Brevin Jones hit six three-pointers and scored 24 points in the loss.

Baylen Bauer scored 15 points and Jake Swolsky added 12 points.

Jones scored 20 points in the victory over Piarist School.

St. Patrick and Augusta split a girls and boys DH in the Hoops for Hope

St. Patrick and Augusta split a girls and boys doubleheader tonight in the Hoops for Hope at St. Patrick.

In the boys' game, the Augusta Panthers scored the first 11 points of the game, but the St. Patrick Saints rallied and scored the last 10 points of the game for a 63-53 victory that snapped a four-game losing streak.

St. Patrick rallied from the 11-0 deficit to lead 31-28 and was up 42-33 in the third quarter.

Augusta stormed back to tie the score at 53-53 midway through the fourth quarter but did not score the rest of the game.

Baylen Bauer hit back-to-back layups, Chandler Black followed with a basket and Jake Swolsky hit four free throws in the 10-0 game-ending run.

Four St. Patrick players scored in double figures with Brevin Jones leading the way with 21 points. Jones hit five three-pointers. Swolsky followed with 14 points. Bauer scored 11 points and  Black added 10 points.

Augusta sophomore Preston Philpot hit seven three-pointers and scored 26 points.

In the girls' game, the Lady Panthers led the whole game in a 50-45 win over the Lady Saints.

The Lady Panthers built an 11-point lead in second quarter and were up by seven points at halftime.

St. Patrick outscored Augusta 10-6 in the third quarter and scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to pull within a point at 32-31. 

Augusta increased the lead to five points.

St. Patrick 7th grader Caroline McKay hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two at 45-43 with 39 seconds left, but the Lady Panthers closed out the game with a 5-2 run.

Augusta senior Kaitlyn Stanton scored a game-high 24 points.

Alexis Shields added 14 points for the Lady Panthers.

St. Patrick was led in scoring by Allison Hughes with 11 points.

Saints fall to Trimble County 81-65

Trimble County guard Troy Grieshaber scored 21 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Raiders to an 81-65 win over the St. Patrick Saints tonight at St. Patrick.

The Raiders outscored the Saints 26-16 in the fourth quarter.

St. Patrick was led in scoring by Jake Swolsky who scored 22 points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.

Brevin Jones tossed in 20 points.

The Saints host Augusta Monday night.
