News and notes for a rainy day
Here are a few news and notes for a rainy October Thursday:
- After the spring sports season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic, several area teams excelled during the fall season: the Mason County boys' soccer team won what is believed to be the program's first district championship, the St. Patrick volleyball team won it's first 10 matches of the season, it's first district championship and won a match in the 10th Region Tournament for the first time, the Mason County girls' cross country team won its third consecutive regional championship and the Augusta boys' cross cross country team won its first regional championship;
- The KHSAA State Cross Country Championships will be held at the new Bourbon County Cross Country Course. The boys' Class AA meet begins at 4 p.m. Friday. The girls' Class AA meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Friday. The boys' Class A meet begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The meets will streamed live on KYtrackXC.com and the NFHS Network.
- Shawnee State University junior BJ Knox of Maysville finished second in the Mid-South Conference Fall Invitational at Bowling Green Country Club on Tuesday. Knox had a 36-hole total of 3-under 141 and finished regulation play tied for first place. He lost a one-hole playoff to finish second. Knox extended his school record streak of rounds in the 70s or lower to 31.
- Mason County archery team tryouts will be held November 2 and 4 with time slots at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Steam Academy. Athletes need to message Coach White to reserve a time slot. Her number is 606-375-0061. Athletes must bring a current sports physical to the tryouts.
