Fans Once Barred from District Game

Seeing the sparse crowds at the Southeastern Conference Tournament because most fans were barred from Alexander Memorial Coliseum after the tournament had to be moved from the Georgia Dome reminded me of a time when fans were kept away from a 39th District Tournament game at the Mason County Fieldhouse. It happened in 1975 or 1977. There was a huge fight involving the fans after a Maysville and Fleming County boys' game. It was such a serious situation that tournament officials barred fans from attending the Maysville vs. Fleming County girls' game. The game was played in the afternoon. Tournament officials, the two teams and the media were the only people allowed in the gym. The Fieldhouse was off limits to students that day. Don Stahl did the play-by-play on WFTM. If my memory is correct, one of my teachers allowed us to listen to part of the game.
