
Darius Miller scored 24 points to lead the Mason County Royals to a 57-48 win over the Covington Holmes Bulldogs in the championship game of the National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena Saturday night. It's Mason County's second state championship in six seasons.
Miller was named the Most Valuable Player. After trailing 14-13 in the second quarter, Mason County took control with a 16-2 run. The Royals led by 15 points in the third quarter, but Holmes pulled to within six points in the fourth quarter. Mason County made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 51 seconds. Mason County outrebounded Holmes 37-23. Miller and Trevor Setty each had eight rebounds. Russ Middleton scored 13 points, including seven in the first quarter. Keith Downing scored a career-high 10 points. Miller, Middleton and Ethan King were named to the All-Tournament Team. A celebration for the Royals will be held today at 3 p.m. at The Fieldhouse.

Despite some nervous moments over the weekend the Royals demonstrated their dominance by winning 13 out of a possible 16 quarters. Championship could not have come home to a bunch of nicer kids.
