Royals Escape with 66-62 Win over Elliott County


The Mason County Royals rallied from a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Elliott County Lions 66-62 tonight in the first round of the National City/KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena. Mason County had defeated Elliott County 90-61 a month ago at The Fieldhouse.

The Royals led by nine in the second quarter and by five at the half tonight, but Elliott County led 57-50 with 4:17 left in the game. The Lions were up 59-53 with 3:14 remaining. Mason County then went on a 9-0 run. Trevor Setty started the run with a three-pointer. Russ Middleton hit a three and Setty hit another trey to make it 62-59 Mason County with 1:45 to go.

Elliott County hit two free throws to make it 62-61. Mason County twice missed the front end of the one and one but the Royals got the rebound both times. After the second miss, Setty got a put back to give Mason County a 64-61 lead. Darius Miller hit two free throws to clinch the victory. Setty hit five three-pointers and scored 19 points. He scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. Miller had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Russ Middleton had 15 points and Ethan King added 11. Jonathan Ferguson led Elliott County with 19 points.

Mason County hit just 5-0f-16 free throws. The Royals will play Paducah Tilghman in the quarterfinals Friday night at 8 o'clock. The Blue Tornado routed Greenwood 77-53. In other games today, Hazard beat South Laurel 50-47 and Shelby County defeated Lincoln County 77-53.
