Lady Royals sweep three races at Fairview

Here is the press release from Mason County Coach Mark Kachler:

The Mason County Lady Royals Cross Country team opened the 2008 cross country season by achieving a first in the program's history- bringing home the 1st place trophy in all three female races at the Fairview Invitational on Saturday. The sweep of the races was done in impressive fashion. The varsity squad began the day placing seven runners in the top 15 medal spots. The Lady Royals were lead by Valerie Rice (3rd) and Blaine Menke (5th) with each bringing home individual trophies, and Raylee Kirkland, Sara Bellingham, Samantha Grayson, Rachel White, and Iretta Carpenter all medalling in the race. Next, it was the Middle School’s turn with Julia Woods leading the way placing 2nd. The middle school girls had 4 runners in the top 10 with Renee Stewart 8th, Abby Huff 9th, and Carley Moore 10th. The last race of the day saw the 6th grade and under team being lead by Cara Woods' 2nd place finish. The young Lady Royals were equally impressive with 5 runners in the top 10- Sierra Anderson 4th, Elizabeth Mason 6th, Savannah Bothman 7th and Megan Pfeffer 9th. The victories were more impressive considering that the host school, Fairview, was pre season ranked #7 in Kentucky Class A and West Virginia’s Charleston Catholic is currently #6 in Class AA. Both were among the schools defeated in the meet at all levels.
The Mason County boys team was led on Saturday by Jim Myers who finished 4th overall in the varsity race. The boys team finished 4th overall out of 11 teams. The 6th grade and under boys' team was second. They were lead by Tanner Kirkland (3rd) and Tyler Toombs (7th) who both medaled in the meet.
" I was very impressed with all our kids today," Coach Mark Kachler said. "The first meet of the season is always a nervous time. I thought the girls' teams responded as we had hoped they would. The boys' varsity ran very well and exceeded our expectations. The young boys were a pleasant surprise. We are getting great support from our assistant coaches, Pat and Tammy Fahey and Travis Scaggs. Our kids are buying into the work we ask for and the results speak for themselves".
The Royals next see action in Danville on Saturday at the E.G. Plummer Invitational.
