Lady Royals win second straight meet

The sixth ranked Mason County girls' cross country team improved to 2-0 by winning the E.G. Plummer Invitational in Danville Saturday. The Lady Royals were led by Julia Woods with a fifth place finish in a time of 22:23. Valerie Rice was seventh, Blaine Menke eighth, Sara Bellingham ninth and Raylee Kirkland 12th. Two other Mason County runners-Samantha Grayson (18th) and Iretta Carpenter (23rd) -also medalled. Sarah Moe of St. Patrick also medalled with a 14th place finish. The Mason County boys led by Conner Appelman and Nathan Woods finished sixth.
The Mason County girls also won the middle school division. They were led by Sierra Anderson (4th), Carley Moore (5th), Abby Huff (6th) and Renee Stewart (15th).
"The heat today was terrible, and combined with a very tough course, it made for one of the toughest physicals challenges we have faced in a long time," Coach Mark Kachler said in a press release. "I thought we handled it well for the most part. Our normal lead guy (Jim Myers) went down due to the heat, which made our boys team finish better than I would have expected. Our girls are just very tough minded. They don’t let many things affect them."
The Mason County Invitational is Saturday on the grounds of the US Bank/Mason County Schools Indoor Athletic Complex on Clark's Run Road. The event begins with an open race at 8:30 a.m., followed by the sixth grade and under, middle school and varsity races.
