Top local sports stories of 2024 Part 1

It's been another busy year in local sports. As 2024 winds down here is a look back at some of the big local stories for the first six months of the year. I'll post highlights of the final six months of the year on Tuesday. 

January 6 - The Mason County Lady Royals defeated the Fleming County Lady Panthers 53-50 in the championship game of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section 6 Tournament to advance to the 2A state tournament for the first time.

January 6 - The Mason County Royals wrestling team won the 1A Section 4 dual championship and qualified for the 1A state duals.

February 9 - Mason County celebrates 50 years of girls' basketball.

February 11 - Mason County wrestlers Bryson Carson, Mecaylon Jackson, Barry Gifford and Evan Martin qualified for the KHSAA state tournament.

February 16 - Braeden Myrick hits a school-record 11 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points in Mason County's 93-72 win over Fleming County.

February 22 - Riley Mastin was named Rookie of the Year in the Southern Athletic Conference.

February 28 - Chris Lofton was named an SEC Legend.

February 29 - The Mason County Royals basketball team won its 8th straight district championship.

March 3 - Lexi Young wins three individual state titles and the Lady Royals were the runners-up at the KHSAA Class 2A State Indoor Track and Field Championships and The Mason County boys' 4x800 meter relay team won a state championship.

April 16 - Mason County Archer Bryce Pollitt won co-individual state championship.

May 11 - Evan Smith qualified for the state tennis tournament.

May 18 - The Mason County Lady Royals track and field team won the region championship.

May 21 - The Mason County Lady Royals softball team won the 39th District tournament.

May 23 - Emily Wood and Bailey Boone qualified for the state tennis tournament.

May 31 - The Mason County Royals baseball team won the 10th Region Tournament for just the second time in school history.

May 31 - The Mason County girls finished fifth at the outdoor track and field championships.

June 9 - Paula Buser resigned as the Mason County Lady Royals' basketball coach.

June 23 - Chris Vinning won the 89th Chippeways.

June 27 - Jake Feldhaus tied for fifth place at the Circle K Junior Championship.
