Blakefield ties for 10th place at The ADI Classic

Mark Blakefield shot an even-par 72 today and finished tied for 10th place in The ADI Classic at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown. Blakefield, the defending champion of the NGA Hooters Pro Golf Tour event, was 12-under for the tournament.

NFHS approves end-of-game replays in state championship basketball games

Beginning next season, basketball game officials will be allowed to use instant replays if there is a question about a shot at the end of state championship games. Here is a link to the news release from the National Association of State High School Federations.

Blakefield shot a two-under par 70 in the third round today at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown and is 12-under for the tournament. The final round is Sunday.

Blakefield two shots back after shooting a 70 today

Mark Blakefield shot a two-under par 70 today and is two shots off the lead after two rounds of The ADI Classic at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown. Blakefield, the defending champion of the NGA Hooters Golf Tour event, began the day tied for the lead. He has a two-round total of 10-under 134 and is tied for third. Mark Blakefield shot an eight-under par 64 Thursday and is the co-leader after one round of The ADI Classic on the Hooters Pro Golf Tour at Cherry Blossom Golf Club in Georgetown. Royals lose to Nicholas County

The Mason County Royals lost to the Nicholas County Bluejackets 10-7 in the opening round of the 10th Region Tournament in a game that ended at 12:22 this morning. The game didn't start until 9:50 Wednesday night because the first game between Scott and and Bourbon County was delayed by rain for almost two hours. Mason County led 4-1 after scoring four runs in the third inning, but the Bluejackets rallied to avenge an 11-10 regular season loss to the Royals. Mason County ends the season with a 10-15 record.

Hinson leaving St. Patrick to become Associate Head Coach at Augusta

After four seasons as the boys' basketball coach at St. Patrick, Jason Hinson is leaving to become the Associate Head Coach at Augusta. Hinson met with the junior and senior players at St. Patrick today. He said it was a tough, emotional day "probably one of the hardest days of my life." Hinson had a record of 57-55-1 at St. Patrick. He is third on the boys' coaches all-time win list at St. Patrick. He had been notified earlier this spring that his teaching position was being eliminated due to budget cuts at St. Patrick. As the Associate Head Coach at Augusta, Hinson will assist Head Coach Robin Kelsch and run a couple of new elementary basketball programs. He is not sure what his teaching job will be.

Lady Saints lose to Harrison County 8-0

The St. Patrick Lady Saints lost to the Harrison County Fillies 8-0 in the first round of the 10th Region fast pitch softball tournament at Montgomery County. The Lady Saints were held to one hit. St. Patrick ends the season with a 13-5 record.

Lady Saints' game should begin sometime between 5:30 and 6

The St. Patrick Lady Saints' game against the Harrison County Fillies in the 10th Region fast pitch softball tournament should begin sometime between 5:30 and 6 p.m. After a long rain delay, Clark County shutout Bishop Brossart 5-0 in the opening game at Montgomery County. Bracken County and Nicholas County are playing in the second game. The St. Patrick vs. Harrison County game will be on WFTM-AM 1240 and online at www.wftm.net.

Rain forces postponement of three 10th Region games

Three first round games of the 10th Region baseball tournament have been postponed today. Campbell County edged Clark County 6-5 in 13 innings in the opening game at Scott High. The other three games were rained out. Here is the revised schedule (weather permitting):

Lady Saints' and Royals' games will be late if played at all

The start times for the St. Patrick Lady Saints' game in the 10th Region softball tournament and the Mason County Royals' game in the 10th Region tournament are going to be much later than originally scheduled if they are played at all today. There is a rain delay in the first game of the 10th Region softball tournament at Montgomery County. St. Patrick and Harrison County were scheduled to play the third game at 3:30. The 10th Region baseball tournament at Scott High is way behind schedule, not because of the weather, but because of a marathon opening game. Campbell County edged Clark County 6-5 in 13th innings. That game started at 10:30 a.m and didn't end until 2:21 p.m. The second game between Harrison County and Bracken County was originally set for 12:45. The third game pitting Scott vs. Bourbon County was scheduled at 3:15, and the Mason County Royals were scheduled to play Nicholas County at 5:30. I will keep you posted.

Rigg 4th in back-to-back tournaments

Russell Rigg shot a 78 Saturday and finished in fourth place, three shots behind the winner, in the Musselman-Dunne Junior Golf Tour event at Seneca Golf Course in Louisville. Rigg also finished fourth in a two-day tournament on the tour last weekend in Prestonsburg. Rigg competes in the boys' 14-15 age division. There are 18 regular season events scheduled. The Tour Championship will be held July 20-21 at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville.

Kitze a winner in Buffalo Trails for the 8th straight year

Michelle Kitze of Kettering, OH (photo) won a Buffalo Trails Multisport race for the 8th straight year Saturday. Kitze won the women's duathlon in a time of 1:55:48. She has won the last four duathlons and seven of the last eight. Kitze won the triathlon in 2005. The 2007 men's duathlon winner, Robert Smith of Huntington, WV, won the triathlon Saturday (1:25:31). Four-time triathlon winner Barry Knight did not return this year. Neither did Allison Poe, the two-time defending champion of the women's triathlon. Julie Knott of Centerville, OH won the women's triathlon (1:41:28). J.D. Pepper of Leslie, MI won the men's duathon (1:42:53). Donna Crawford, an amputee from Cincinnati, completed the triathlon. Crawford is a member of Team in Training which is raising money for the Leukemia Society. The triathlon began with a half-mile run after the half-mile swim was cancelled. Nathan Hauke of Winchester, OH won the 5K run (16:20). Jim Myers of Maysville was second and Eric Taylor of Maysville was fourth. Meredith Gordon of New Albany, OH won the women's 5K (21:47). Maysville will host the 2009 MidEast Region Club Series Championship on August 15.

Lady Royals tie for 37th place at state meet

The Mason County girls' track and field team finished tied for 37th place at the Class 2A state meet Friday. Highlands won the girls' Class 2A state championship. Covington Catholic is the boys' Class 2A champion. The Mason County girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Andreanna Bennett, Sierra McDaniel, Madison Paver and Katie Redmond took sixth place. McDaniel was ninth in the girls' 100 meter dash. The Mason County boys' 4x200 meter relay team of Seth Adkins, Terrance Breckendridge, Josh Harris and Westin Stahl took fifth place for Mason County's best finish. The 4x100 meter relay team of Adkins, Breckenridge, Brandon Jackson and Malcolm Jones finished sixth. Adkins was eighth in the boys' 200 meter dash. Harris was 10th in the boys' 400 meter dash. Swim portion of triathlon cancelled

For the second straight year, the swim portion of the Buffalo Trails Trialthon has been cancelled because of high bacteria levels in the Ohio River. Water samples were taken Thursday and the test results announced today showed bacteria levels too high for a safe swim. The half-mile swim will be replaced by a half-mile run. The triathlon and duathlon begin at 8 a.m. The 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m. You can listen to live coverage of the races on www.soft96.com.

Royals draw Nicholas County in 10th Region Tournament

The Mason County Royals will play the Nicholas County Bluejackets in the first round of the 10th Region baseball tournament Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Scott High. All four first round games are scheduled on Monday. Here is the schedule:

Lady Saints lose to the Lady Bears 12-0

The St. Patrick Lady Saints lost to the Bracken County Lady Bears 12-0 in six innings in the championship game of the 39th District fast pitch softball tournament tonight at Bracken County. Both teams advance to the 10th Region Tournament next week at Montgomery County.

Buffalo Trails Multisport races Saturday

The Buffalo Trails Multisport races are this Saturday in Maysville. The triathlon and duathlon begin at 8 a.m. The 5K run begins at 8:30 a.m. The Maysville Recreation Commission is in charge of the 5K run this year. Donna Crawford, an amputee from Cincinnati, has signed up for the triathlon. WKRC-TV has been following her story as she trains for a triathlon in Philadelphia next month. Royals beat Polar Bears for sixth straight district title

The Mason County Royals beat the Bracken County Polar Bears 13-2 in six innings for their sixth straight district title. Ryne King scattered five hits and struck out seven. Cory Woods hit a two-run home run for the second straight day. Mason County almost closed out the game in the fifth inning. Bracken County trailed 11-1 and was down to its final out when Andrew Cummins hit a home run to extend the game to the sixth inning. The Royals scored twice in the top of the sixth, and King retired the Polar Bears in order in the bottom of the inning to give Mason County its 10th win of the season. King also had a good game at the plate. He drove in the Royals' first run with a triple in the first inning, and singled and scored in the fourth inning. Keegan McGee was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Both teams advance to the 10th Region Tournament next week at Scott.

Katie Crawford threw a three-inning perfect game as St. Patrick beat Augusta 15-0 today in the semifnals of the 39th District fast pitch softball tournament. Crawford struck out five batters.
The Lady Saints scored 11 runs in the second inning. The Bracken County Lady Bears blanked the Mason County Lady Royals 19-0 in four innings in the other semifinal game. St. Patrick and Bracken County will meet in the championship game Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Bracken County. The game will be on WFTM-AM 1240 and online at www.wftm.net.

Chris Lofton's rookie pro season ends with playoff loss

Chris Lofton's rookie season in the Turkish Basketball League ended today when Mersin BSB. lost to Turk Telecom 98-90 in the playoffs. Turk Telecom wins the quarterfinal series three games to one. Lofton scored 15 points.

Bracken County and Mason County winners in district semifinals

The Bracken County Polar Bears and the Mason County Royals posted semifinal wins in the 39th District baseball tournament today. Bracken County beat St. Patrick 14-4 in five innings, and Mason County defeated Augusta 11-1 in six innings. Bracken County and St. Patrick were tied 4-4 before the Polar Bears scored six runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth. Mason County broke-open a close game with six runs in the fourth inning. Mason County junior Lee Sutton pitched a complete game. He struck out 11 and only gave up four hits. He was 4-for-4 at the plate. Cory Woods hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Mason County and Bracken County will meet in the championship game Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Mason County. The game will be on WFTM-AM 1240 and online at www.wftm.net.

Lofton scores 26 points in Mersin BSB. win

Chris Lofton scored 26 points and Mersin BSB. stayed alive in the Turkish Basketball League playoffs with a 104-103 victory over Turk Telecom Sunday. Lofton had two rebounds and three assists. Turk Telecom leads the best of five quarterfinal series two games to one.

Chris Morris tied for 22nd place in NCAA Division III Championship

Chris Morris tied for 22nd place in the NCAA Division III Men's Championship in Port St. Lucie, FL. Morris had rounds of 71-76-76-74 and finished the tournament at nine-over par. Morris is a rising junior at Centre College.

Lewis has 8 receptions, 1 TD in Horsemen loss

Harry Lewis had eight receptions for 147 yards and one touchdown for the Kentucky Horsemen in a 78-64 loss to the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings Saturday night at Rupp Arena. The Horsemen (3-4) host the Florida Firecats this Saturday.

Lady Royals region champions for the first time

The Mason County girls' track and field team won the regional championship for the first time in school history Friday night. The Lady Royals upset Russell by 11 points in the Class 2A Region 6 meet at Rowan County. Mason County finished in third place in the boys' meet. The Mason County girls had lost to Russell three times in the final two weeks of the regular season.
"We opened the night with one of the most exciting finishes to a 4x800 meter relay that I have ever witnessed when Julia Woods came from 15 meters back on the last lap to out lean Russell and Ashland at the line," Coach Mark Kachler wrote in an e-mail message. "That set the tone for the whole team the rest of the night. Everyone on the team contributed in everyway possible." The Mason County boys won every sprint and relay event. Brandon Jackson had a personal best in the long jump (20-02.00).
"The boys performed great tonight," Kachler wrote in the e-mail message. "We have some holes to fill as a team which cost us a chance at the team title but what we do, we do it really well. I look forward to them excelling in the state meet next week."

Chris Morris makes the cut at NCAA Division III Championship

Chris Morris made the cut at the NCAA Division III Men's Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL. Morris, who recently finished his sophomore year at Centre College, began today's third round tied for 19th place at three-over par. He was nine shots off the lead. Morris shot a one-under 71 in the first round and a 76 in the second round. Here is a link to live scoring on Morris' third round.

Lofton scores 14 points in two-point loss in the playoffs

Chris Lofton scored 14 points for Mersin BSB. in an 80-78 loss to Turk Telecom in the quarterfinal round of the Turkish Basketball League playoffs Thursday. Turk Telecom has a 2-0 lead in the best of five series. Mersin BSB. will host the next game on Sunday.

Class 2A Region 6 track and field meet Friday

After a successful regular season, the Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams will compete in the Class 2A Region 6 meet Friday at Rowan County. The other teams in the region are Ashland Blazer, Boyd County, East Carter, Fleming County, Greenup County, Lawrence County, Lewis County, Morgan County, Rowan County, Russell and West Carter.
The top six places will count in scoring in each event. Trophies will be given to the team winner and runner-up. Awards will be given to the first six finishers in each event.

Lofton and Mersin BSB. begin playoffs down one game to none

When Chris Lofton and Mersin BSB. begin their Turkish Basketball League playoff series against Turk Telecom Thursday they will already trail one game to none in the best of five quarterfinals.
Under TBL rules, Turk Telecom is credited with a win in the playoff series because it swept the two regular season games against Mersin BSB. Three of the four quarterfinal series will begin with a team having a one game to none lead. That is really putting an emphasis on the regular season. Turk Telecom, the number two seed, will have homecourt advantage Thursday. Mersin BSB., the number seven seed, will host Sunday's game. Lofton ended up third in the league in points per game (20.1).

Lady Royals win Fleming Co. meet, Royals third

The Mason County Lady Royals won the Fleming County track and field meet Monday night. The Lady Royals racked up 176 points to beat the second place team, Fleming County, by 72 points. Mason County finished third in the boys' meet. Here is a list of first place finishes by Mason County athletes:

Harry Lewis scores three TDs in loss

Harry Lewis had nine receptions for 120 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night for the Kentucky Horsemen in a 72-66 loss to the South Georgia Wildcats in af2. Lewis had touchdown receptions of eight, 35 and 15 yards. For the season, Lewis has 42 receptions for 547 yards and nine touchdowns. The Horsemen (3-3) host the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings Saturday at 7 p.m. at Rupp Arena.

Lofton scores 29 points in regular season finale

Chris Lofton scored a game-high 29 points, but Mersin BSB. lost to Efes Pilsen in the final game of the regular season Saturday in the Turkish Basketball League. Mersin BSB. finished in seventh place with a 15-15 record. Efes Pilsen is the regular season champion at 28-2. Mersin BSB. will begin postseason play on Thursday.

Mason Co. girls 14th, boys 48th in KTCCCA Middle School State Championships

The Mason County girls' track and field team finished 14th and the boys were 48th in the KTCCCA Middle School State Championships Saturday at Paul Dunbar High School in Lexington.
Mason County 8th grader Raylee Kirkland was the state runner-up in the girls' pole vault.

News and notes

There's not much sports action due to the wet weather, so it's a good time for some news and notes:

  • The 10th Region tennis tournament will be played Saturday at Georgetown College. Kinley Hendrickson is in his first year as the tennis coach at St. Patrick. George Frodge coaches the Mason County tennis teams;
  • The Mason County junior varsity baseball tournament is Saturday. The first game starts at 10 a.m.
  • The state Track and Field Championships are scheduled May 22 and 23 at Owsley Frazier Cardinal Park on the University of Louisville campus;
  • The 10th Region baseball tournament will be held at Scott High. The 10th Region fast pitch softball tournament will be played at Tommy Reffett Field in Mt. Sterling;
  • Former Mason County Royals basketball trainer Greg Himes will be a trainer for the Kentucky All-Star team in the annual series against the Indiana All-Stars. Himes was trainer for the 2004 Kentucky All-Star team coached by Kelly Wells and led by Mr. Basketball Chris Lofton. Himes is the Sports Medicine/Exercise Science Instructor at Southern Hills Career and Technical Center;
  • The Little Royals Softball Camp is scheduled June 15-19 at the Maysville-Mason County Recreation Park. Kindergarten and 1st grade 9-10 a.m., 2nd and 3rd grade 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 4th and 5th grade 12-1 p.m. Pitching and catching instruction (grades 3-5 only) will be from 1:30-2:30. Groups are organized by the grade your child has just finished. The cost for the skills camp only is $20. The cost for attending both the skills camp and pitching instruction is $30. Mason Co. girls and boys both 2nd at Meet of Champions

The Mason County girls' and boys' track teams both finished second to Russell in the Meet of Champions Tuesday night at Russell. The varsity closes out the regular season Friday at Fleming County. The regional meet is May 15 at Rowan County. Here is a list of the Mason County athletes who finished first at the Meet of Champions:
  • Sierra McDaniel, girls' 100 meter dash (13.66);
  • Ashley Deatley, girls' 400 meter dash (1:05.05) and girls' high jump (4-08.00);
  • Madison Paver, girls' long jump (15-01.50);
  • Josh Harris, boy's 400 meter dash (52.75);
  • Westin Stahl, boys' 800 meter run (2:10.02);
  • The girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Madison Paver, Katie Redmond, Sierra McDaniel and Andreana Bennett (55.71);
  • The boys' 4x400 meter relay team of Malcolm Jones, Josh Harris, Jim Meyers and Westin Stahl (3:39.69).

Allison Poe 2nd in age group in St. Anthony's Triathlon

Maysville native Allison Poe, the two-time defending champion of the Buffalo Trails Triathlon, finished second in her age group in St. Anthony's Triathlon in St. Petersburg, Fla. last month.
Poe finished the race in a time 1:54:54. The Buffalo Trails Multisport races will be held in Maysville on Saturday, May 23. Here is a link to the race website.

Kelly Middleton elected to Georgetown College Athletic Hall of Fame

Mason County Schools Assistant Superintendent Kelly Middleton has been elected to the Georgetown College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Middleton was a standout basketball player at Georgetown College from 1983 to 1985. He is 15th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,553 points and 10th in steals with 146. Middleton holds the single-season school record for free throw percentage (88.6% in the 1985-86 season).
He shares the school record for free throw percentage in a game (100%, 15-of-15 vs. Brescia in the 1984-85 season). Middleton also played tennis at Georgetown College. He was an All-American Scholar Athlete in the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. The Hall of Fame dinner and induction cermonies will be held Saturday, May 23.

Elizabeth Levay third in high jump at conference meet

Georgetown College freshman Elizabeth Levay of Maysville finished third in the women's high jump at the 2009 Mid-South Conference Track and Field Championships April 25 at the University of the Cumberlands. The Georgetown women finished fifth in the meet.

Mason County sweeps Area 7 Middle School Championships

The Mason County Middle School girls' and boys' track and field teams swept the Area 7 Middle School Championships Friday night at Lawrence County. The girls won by 25.5 points, and the boys won by 31 points. Here is a list of the first place finishers for Mason County:

Lofton scores 12 points in loss

Chris Lofton, coming off a 61-point performance last week, scored 12 points today as Mersin BSB. lost to Kepez Belediye 91-82 in the Turkish Basketball League. There is one game left in the regular season.

Brian Kretzer wins River Valley Challenge

PBA member Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio won the River Valley Challenge today at Town and Country Lanes in Aberdeen. Kretzer had an eight-game total of 1,759 and edged Brian Himmler by eight pins. Kretzer joins Riga Kalfas as the only two-time champions of the spring tournament. Kretzer also won in 2007. He won the fall event in 2005. Here is a link to the tournament scores.

Jackson Tolle fast and strong at Georgetown College testing

Jackson Tolle ran a 4.71 in the 40-yard dash at the Georgetown College Tigers' testing. He was the fastest among the linebackers and defensive linemen. Tolle was second on the team in the 20-yard shuttle (4.1) and in the top 5 in bench reps 225 pounds 18 times.
