The Mason County Royals had their seven-point fourth quarter lead cut to a point but were able to hang on for a 63-60 win over the visiting Rowan County Vikings on Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Kentucky 2A Championships Section Tournament.
Jake Feldhaus scored 18 points on 9-of-11 shots and grabbed five rebounds, Blake Reed followed with 13 points and Braylon Hamilton added 11 points.
Cole Horch contrbuted nine points, six rebounds and five assists.
After trailing 44-38, the Royals used a 15-3 run to lead 53-47.
Mason County (8-5) was up 59-52, but Rowan County (8-6) pulled to within one at 59-58. Hamilton sank two free throws to push the lead back to three. The Vikings scored again and fouled Hamilton after the Royals inbounded the ball. Hamilton went back to the line and made both free throws. Rowan County called a timeout after advancing the ball into front court. The Vikings inbounded the ball with five seconds to play, but the Royals clinched the victory with a steal.
The win avenges the Royals' 86-77 season-opening loss to Rowan County.
Mason County will play the Powell County Pirates in the semifinals Thursday night at Fleming County.
