Lady Royals and Royals sweep region track and field meets

The Mason County girls' and boys' track and field teams swept the Class 2A Region meets at Mason County Saturday.

It's the Lady Royals' second consecutive region championship and their 10th in 14 years. It's the Royals' first region title since 2014.

Both teams had convincing wins. The Lady Royals finished with 198 points. Runner-up Russell had 102.5 points. The Royals piled up 159 points. Runner-up Greenup County tallied 94 points.

Mason County athletes who are region champions in events include:

  • Austin Moreland, boys' 100 meter hurdles (16.43) and boys' 300 meter hurdles (42.34)
  • CJ Arthur, boys' 100 meter dash (11.23) and boys' 200 meter dash (23.03)
  • Layla Henderson, girls' 1600 meter run (5:14.28) and girls' 3200 meter run (11:15.20) 
  • Peyton Ullery, boys' 1600 meter run (4:37.89)
  • Lexi Young, girls' 200 meter dash (26.58), girls' long jump (18-02.00) and girls' high jump (5-07.00)
  • Kesahun Thomas, boys' long jump (19-10.50)
  • Ava Thompson, girls' pole vault (10-06.00)
  • AJ Barrett, boys' pole vault (12-00.00)
  • The girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Madison Howard, Amirah Reed, Adrienne Perry and Neveah Wright (51.41)
  • The boys' 4x200 meter relay team of Jonathan Jones, Isaac Marshall, Austin Moreland and Brady Sanders (1:34.33)
  • The girls' 4x400 meter relay team of Paige Decker, Alexis Decker, Sarah Payne and Morgan Carpenter (4:20.44)
  • The boys' 4x400 meter relay team of Elijah Reed, Brady Sanders, CJ Arthur and Austin Moreland (3:38.70)
  • The girls' 4x800 meter relay team of Paige Decker, Kolby Galloway, Elizabeth Lavinder and Layla Henderson (10:05.54)
  • The boys' 4x800 meter relay team of Philip Bierley, Dashawn Overly, Elijah Reed and Peyton Ullery (8:27.51)

Clark's Pump and Shop Track and Field Class 2A State Championships will take place Friday, June 2 at the University of Kentucky.
