Up until 2019, both the region champions and runners-up advanced to the state golf tournament. But during the past three seasons, the region runner-up did not advance. Several golf coaches and golf pros were opposed to that format.
Under the changes approved Wednesday, both the region champions and the runners-up will advance to a newly created State First Round. There will be four regions represented in each of the three State First Round sites. The top 10 individuals in each region from non-advancing teams will also qualify for the State First Round. That means there will be 80 golfers at each site.
The top three teams from each State First Round site plus the top 15 individuals from non-advancing teams will participate in the State Final Round.
The State Final Round will still feature two days of play, but there will be no cut, all 90 golfers will play a total of 36 holes.
