No shot clock in Kentucky High School Basketball during the 2022-23 season

After seeing the results of a survey of member schools, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control voted Wednesday not to adopt a shot clock for the 2022-23 season.

The National Federation of High Schools is allowing states to adopt a shot clock on a state-by-state basis beginning next season.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said 75 percent of the schools responded to the survey conducted in May of 2021. There was one vote per school, per gender. On the girls' side, only 42 percent were in favor of a shot clock, and on the boys' side, only 46 percent wanted to add a shot clock.

"Most coaches, their opinion of the shot clock at the high school level, appears to vary based on their team that year," Tackett said. "With the right composition, they like it. With the wrong composition, they don't. So, it goes back and forth."

The Commissioner said the KHSAA will continue to review the issue.

"I think the idea would be year-to-year, we would take a look at it," Tackett said.

Tackett added, "I think there are people who admittedly are waiting to see how it works in other states."

The KHSAA will allow schools to use a shot clock at specific events if willing to gather data for further consideration.
