Ready for the Rec Bowl

I'm excited about the Mason County Royals' season opener tonight against Lafayette in the 59th Recreation Bowl in Mt. Sterling. Lafayette has one of its most talented teams in years. Mason County has a lot of talent, but has to replace many key players due to graduation. The Recreation Bowl is Kentucky's oldest bowl. It was started in 1948. Here are some facts from the official program:

- The Recreation Bowl crowned the mythical state champions before the playoff system started in 1959.

- The games have been played at the current site, Cunningham Field, since 1974.

- There was just one game in the Recreation Bowl each year from 1948 to 1964.
The two-game format ran from 1965 to 1981. Three games were played in 1982 and 1983 before a return to the two-game schedule in 1984.

- Somerset blanked Evarts 27-0 in the 1st Recreation Bowl.

I'm also looking forward to broadcasting from the new pressbox at Cunningham Field.
New bleachers and chair-back seats have also been added. I hope you can attend tonight's games.
