Lafayette 21, Mason County 6

The Mason County Royals committed six turnovers in a 21-6 season-opening loss to the Lafayette Generals last night in the Recreation Bowl. It was 7-0 at halftime. Mason County senior tailback Chase Crawford scored on a 12 yard run in the third quarter. The extra point kick missed. Lafayette scored on its next drive and added a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Royals coach David Buchanan said he was pleased with his team's effort, but there were too many mistakes. Mason County's defense played well. Lafayette's first touchdown was set up by a 62 yard return on the opening kickoff.
Lafayette could be the best team Mason County will play in the regular season.
The Royals' home opener is Friday night against Montgomery County. The improvements to Cunningham Field (new bleachers and pressbox) are nice. It was the first time I've called a game in an air-conditioned pressbox. Yes, it's a tough job.
Montgomery County boys basketball coach Bart Rison gave us a tour of the new gymnasium. It's a beautiful facility, but it is not as big as I expected.
